Alexandra "Alex" Reed Halsey Barker
Eldest sister Alex is wealthy and somewhat superficial, but also very protective and close to her sisters. She begins the series married to successful plastic surgeon Wade Halsey, though their marriage does not last. Her experience with breast cancer eventually led to a career as a talk show host, where she met and married "Big Al" Barker. She often clashed with her rebellious daughter Reed. Alex is the only character to appear in every episode of the series.
- Break the Haughty: She softens quite a bit as the series goes on, after her cancer and when she meets Big Al.
- Chewing the Scenery: Alex tends to have the most outlandish fantasy sequences and Swoosie Kurtz certainly has fun with them.
- Drama Queen: Alex gets fairly melodramatic when things don't go her way.
- She smashed her own expensive crystal collection when Reed eloped without telling her.
- Housewife: During her marriage to Wade.
- It's All About Me: Has a high opinion of herself, but also high standards that she expects everyone else to live up to, regardless of whether or not they have the same values.
- Love-Obstructing Parents: Alex and Wade to Reed and Kirby, at first.
- The Perfectionist: Has very high standards for herself and her family.
- Stage Mom: When Reed is in a play.
- Slave to PR: Extremely reputation obsessed.
- Successful Sibling Syndrome: When Teddy finds unprecedented success.
Theodora "Teddy" Reed Margolis Falconer Sorenson
Free-spirited second sister Teddy is a recovering alcoholic and the black sheep of the family. She had been living in California with her daughter Cat prior to the beginning of the series. Upon her return to Winnetka, she slowly gets her life together and eventually launches a career as a fashion designer, though not without a few missteps here and there. She is impulsive and sometimes self-destructive, which causes problems in her relationships, but Teddy is also passionate and creative, and always there for her sisters.
- Accents Aren't Hereditary: Sela Ward tones down her natural Southern drawl, but it's still there.
- The Alcoholic: Has a long and storied history with alcohol, though she is sober through most of the series, minus a couple of slip-ups.
- Artists Are Attractive: With Simon Bolt
- Benevolent Boss: To McKinley, and the other employees of her fashion company
- Black Sheep: Teddy's chaotic lifestyle sticks out compared to her successful and stable sisters, especially at the beginning of the series. Her post-divorce years in California were a series of drunken mistakes and impulsive failures, and she finds it hard to break her old habits and get past her low self esteem even when she finds success for herself.
- Cool Big Sis: During their teenage years.
- Dark and Troubled Past: She had some hard times, particularly after her divorce from Mitch.
- Dark Horse Sibling: When her fashion line takes off.
- Deadpan Snarker: The most sarcastic of the sisters.
- The Determinator: Following Cat's rape and Falconer's death.
- Drowning My Sorrows: When she falls Off the Wagon.
- Hard-Drinking Party Girl: For most of her youth, crossing over into The Alcoholic and then Recovered Addict.
- Off the Wagon: In season one, after Mitch chooses Frankie over her, and then again in season five after Falconer's death.
- Recovered Addict: Despite her reputation, Teddy is sober for the vast majority of the series.
- Struggling Single Mother: After her divorce and up until Cat goes to college.
- What If the Baby Is Like Me: Teddy worries Cat will become an alcoholic.
Georgiana "Georgie" Reed Whitsig
The third and most level-headed and responsible sister, Georgie is a stay-at-home mom and off-and-on real estate agent. She is the most trusted confidant of her sisters. On the surface, she had an ideal domestic life with a loving if eccentric husband John and two sons, Trevor and Evan. Georgie is stable and caring, taking on almost a mothering role to all of her sisters.
- Good Is Not Dumb: She tends to be the most optimistic of her sisters, but her perspective is always practical and well thought out.
- Nuclear Family: For most of the series, with John and their two sons.
- The Reliable One: Georgie is the one everyone turns to when they're in trouble.
- The Stoic: Always practical, she rarely lets her emotions get out of hand.
- Team Mom: In spite of being the second youngest of the core four, she is this to her sisters.
- Women Are Wiser: Georgie to her family of all boys.
Francesca "Frankie" Reed Margolis
Youngest sister Frankie is a workaholic businesswoman. She dated and eventually married her sister Teddy's ex-husband, Mitch. Her devotion to her career tended to put a strain on her relationship with Mitch and eventually resulted in their divorce. Following their divorce, Frankie quit her executive job and became the owner of the Sweet Sixteen, the sisters' favorite local diner. In the fifth season, Phillips left the show and the Frankie character moved to Japan for work, although she did return for the two-hour series finale.
- The Baby of the Bunch: In spite of being a successful and even-keeled business woman, Frankie is still this to all her family members.
- Control Freak: Her business acumen tends to spill over into her personal relationships.
- Elegant Classical Musician: More so in the early seasons, but she is a talented pianist.
- Embarrassing Nickname: "Stinkerbell", courtesy of Teddy.
- Married to the Job: Mitch has a hard time accepting Frankie's devotion to her career.
- Put on a Bus: Midway through season 5.
- Workaholic: Frankie's career is her top priority.
Dr. Charlotte "Charley" Bennett Hayes
During the fourth season, the sisters discovered a fifth sister, the love child of an affair their father had had with another woman. This fifth sister, Charley Bennett, was played initially by Jo Anderson on a recurring basis and then by Sheila Kelley, who received starring status in the final season. Charley was integrated into the story lines as Frankie was phased out, as Julianne Phillips had decided to leave the show. Charley had spent her childhood in foster homes and was initially somewhat cold towards her newfound sisters, but eventually came to accept them into her life. Charley was a doctor who worked in a free health care clinic with her colleague and eventual husband Dr. Wes Hayes. During the final season, Charley took in an orphaned teenager named Jesse and intended to adopt him, but ultimately did not complete the adoption because she realized Jesse should go with his brother who had been adopted by another family.
Beatrice Reed Ventner
Beatrice, the sisters' mother and the family matriarch, was a recovering alcoholic who at the start of the series had been recently widowed. Her husband's long-term affair with his nurse had caused her to seek solace in alcohol; she regretted that Teddy had apparently inherited her alcoholism. In the third season she married retired local judge Truman Ventner, who later suffered from Alzheimer's.
