Leadership
Commander Abigail Brand
Species: Human/alien mutant hybrid
First Appearance: Astonishing X-Men (Vol. 3) #3 (September, 2004)
- "Welcome to S.W.O.R.D., gentlemen — Hope you survive the experience."
Born to a mutant from Earth and an alien father on the planet Axus, Abigail Brand rose to become the head of S.W.O.R.D., a sub-division of S.H.I.E.L.D. which dealt with extraterrestrial threats until it was disbanded, after which she joined Alpha Flight under the command of Captain Marvel. With the X-Men's proclivity to end up dealing with extraterrestrial issues, and having a few alien members of their own throughout the years, Brand has frequently become involved in their issues. After resigning from Alpha Flight, Abigail solidified her place within mutant society by restarting S.W.O.R.D. as an independent Krakoan agency.
For Brand's tropes, see her entry on the S.W.O.R.D. (2020) page.
Members
Lockheed
Nationality: Flock
Species: Flock
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #166 (February, 1983)
Lockheed is a purple, winged, quadrupedal alien that resembles a small dragon. He is the longtime companion of Kitty Pryde with whom he shares a special bond. He is a valued member of the X-Men and founding member of The Pet Avengers.
Henry Philip "Hank" McCoy / Beast
Nationality: American
Species: Human mutant
First Appearance: X-Men #1 (September, 1963)
A brilliant scientist, athlete, and bibliophile, at first the only thing that indicated that Hank McCoy was a mutant were large hands and feet, and, later, an overall simian aesthetic. However, an experiment to enhance his already superhuman strength and agility transformed him into a blue-furred ape creature and later a blue lion man. Beast is a genius in genetics and biology and enjoys quoting Shakespeare. His even-handed and professorial attitude tend to keep the other members from panicking in situations. He's actually been in more teams than any other X-Man, having been a member of The Avengers and The Defenders before; accordingly, being in the public eye as a member of the high-profile Avengers has made him one of the most accepted mutants by society at large.
Henry Peter Gyrich
Nationality: American
Species: Human
First Appearance: Avengers #165 (November, 1977)
The Avengers's old government liaison. Also a gigantic douchebag.
For Gyrich's tropes, see his entry on the S.W.O.R.D. (2020) page.
Jessica Drew
Nationality: American
Species: Human mutate
First Appearance: Marvel Spotlight #32 (February, 1977)
Jessica Drew was genetically enhanced and given super-powers by the criminal organization HYDRA, for whom she became an assassin as Spider-Woman. She later reformed and became a SHIELD agent and was also once a member of the Avengers and an Agent of SWORD.
Agent Deems
Nationality: American
Species: Human
First Appearance: Astonishing X-Men (Vol. 3) #16 (October, 2006)
Deems was an agent of S.W.O.R.D.. As Agent Brand's right hand man, Agent Deems provided the human Ying to Brand's cynical Yang. With nothing but a sensible and grounded attitude, Deems fought at Brand's side through most of her battles. While she was prone to anger and tempestuousness Deems was always calm and considered.
- Last-Name Basis: His first name was never known.
