Humans

    The Protagonists
A group of kids whose school field trip was hijacked, leading them to being stuck in the old stage with the Rainbow Friends. Their main goal is to collect objects and bring them to a single location in order to escape.
  • Kid Hero: Naturally, since they're still young enough to be on a school field trip and are just trying to survive.
  • Mobile Shrubbery: Somehow, hiding inside a cardboard box is an excellent way to hide, no matter how ill-fitting its location is. The fact that some of the Rainbow Friends do not attack even if the box is moving right in front of them only highlights how absurd it is.

    The Technician
A man who was trying to break into Odd World... for some reason.
  • Distressed Dude: Gets kidnapped and held hostage by Red during Chapter 2, placed high up on a ride with incoming dynamite slowly creeping up. That being said, it's really just an empty threat.
  • The Spook: He's trying to break into Odd World... just because.

The Rainbow Friends

    In General
The mascots for Oddworld, now gone rogue and ready to kill. They were contained in the facility where the first chapter takes place, but due to Red's meddling, they're now free to wreak havoc all around.
  • Antagonist Title: The titular Rainbow Friends, and they're anything but friendly here.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: The first three Rainbow Friends introduced (Blue, Green, Orange) fit this trope to a tee, even being added in the exact same order of the trope name. Considering that, aside from Purple (who lacks a visible body in the first place), these three are the only threats in Chapter 1, this seems to be intentional.
  • Colourful Theme Naming: They are the "Rainbow" Friends after all. It makes sense for them to be named after colors.
  • Mascot Villain: Were the mascots for a popular show, to the point where an entire theme park in their image was made.
  • Run or Die: As a group of kids, there isn't really a lot you can do against giant, man-eating monsters. Your only saving grace are either boxes or various hiding spots around the map, and even then, the first one isn't all that consistently helpful.
  • To Serve Man: All of the game's jumpscares feature the friends attacking the player by biting at them, indicating this.
  • Would Hurt a Child: They're on the hunt for the school-aged protagonists, so they're naturally this.
    Blue
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluerainbowfriend.png
Big, bad, and built as a king, Blue is the first Rainbow Friend introduced, and is by far the simplest. He is introduced on the very first night, and remains a consistent threat throughout the game.
  • Blue Means Smart One: Inverted, Blue has by far the easiest AI to outsmart, and is generally considered to be the dumbest of the group. That being said, Chapter 2 introduces a different enemy that fits this trope perfectly.
  • Cool Crown: Has one, for some reason.
  • Eye Scream: One of his eyes has been replaced by a button, and according to photos in the first chapter, it wasn't like that originally.
  • Final Boss: Of Chapter 1.
  • The Goomba: Has the simplest AI of the bunch, easy to outrun, and generally easy to outsmart.
  • Mascot Mook: Doubly so. While the others are mascots in-universe, Blue is essentially the mascot of the game, being present on the game's thumbnail.
  • Visual Pun: He is a blue person wearing a crown. In other words, he's a Blue Blood.
    Green
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/greenrainbowfriend.png
Grabby, giant, and far from gentle, Green is introduced on the second night and is completely blind. As such, he cannot see the players, but can attack through boxes.
  • Blind Seer: Well, seer might be pushing it, but Green is able to attack through boxes, something that most other enemies cannot do.
  • Lean and Mean: Kind of. By far the tallest of the friends, and is hostile to the players regardless of if they are in a box or not, but does not actively seek players out.
  • Sense-Impaired Monster: As stated multiple times by now, he is blind.
    Orange
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orangerainbowfriend.png
Outrageous and constantly ogling for food, Orange is introduced in the third night, resting in his own little den. Be sure to feed him, or else he'll be make a mad dash throughout the map, attacking everything in his path.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The cutscene before his night begins has him start to empty the food canister the players just filled, signaling that he must be fed.
  • Forgot to Feed the Monster: A mechanic. Orange will not attack if the players feed him. That being said, be sure to not overfeed him, or else he will immediately attack you.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Crocodilian, or at least reptile-based, and vicious.
  • Vibrant Orange: A villainous example. By far the most energetic of the Rainbow Friends when angered, quickly running around the map when he isn't fed, and is orange.
    Purple
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/purplerainbowfriend.png
Patient and powerful, Purple is also introduced on the third night, and hides in the vents. In the second chapter, they hide in snow and fog to capture players.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The only enemy Rainbow Friend who has no known gender, due to them not being properly introduced by Red.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: Aside from a very vague face and arms, Purple's body is a mystery.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Unlike the other friends, Purple is contained primarily in a few set locations, and does not wander around the game map.
  • Mysterious Purple: By far the most enigmatic Rainbow Friend, and is purple.
  • Ominous Fog: Weaponized. In Chapter 2, Purple hides inside the fog in their lair, preventing the player from seeing their entire body.
  • The Spook: Virtually no information was actually given for Purple, to the point where Red only vaguely alludes to them by the time they become a threat in Chapter 1 and fails to mention them in Chapter 2.
    Red (SPOILERS UNMARKED)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/redrainbowfriend.png
Ready for action, Red is the ringleader of the friends. Who he truly is and why he does what he does is unclear for now.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Is this guy an actual Rainbow Friend? He seems much more humanoid and in control of himself than the others, but whether or not the character was always like that is unclear. It gets weirder once the second chapter introduces Lookies, who look suspiciously like Red's head but with the ability to blink.
    • Further complicating the matter is a different Red that has been found in the files and as a model, and this design is used on the Minigame box skin.
  • Big Bad: Controls the friends, and seems dead set on finishing his goals... whatever those are.
  • No Name Given: Truthfully, we don't even know if his name is Red, as it's never mentioned in-game. Tellingly, outside sources occasionally give him the nickname of "The Scientist" rather than Red.
  • Red Is Violent: Inverted, he's the only Rainbow Friend who does not directly attack the players. He does kidnap the technician, but even then his threats against the latter are empty.
  • The Smart Guy: Seems like it, considering he's the only friend capable of speech. His outfit resembling one of a scientist reinforces this.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's pretty hard to talk about Red without bringing up the fact that he was the one who kidnapped the party in the beginning of the game, the fact that he's a Rainbow Friend, or the fact that he serves as an antagonist in the second chapter.
    Yellow
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yellowrainbowfriend.png
Yearning for action, Yellow is the first new opponent introduced in the second chapter. If he catches a player, he will take them high into the sky to prepare them in his nest, where he will kill them.
  • Helicopter Pack: Has a helicopter pack that seems to take the form from a vest on his back.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Players are able to escape from his grasp by jumping, but if they aren't under the river or bouncy house, expect a gruesome fate at the end.
  • Terror-dactyl: Appears to be a pterodactyl of some kind, and is generally aggressive.
  • Token Flyer: The only Rainbow Friend who can fly, all thanks to the propeller on his back.
    Cyan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cyanrainbowfriend.png
Cold, curious, and always cautious of her surroundings, Cyan is the final enemy introduced in Chapter 2, introduced in the final hour. Cyan is smarter than the others, and notices if something is moving.
  • Blue Means Smart One: The real example of this trope, Cyan is perceptive enough to notice that boxes probably shouldn't move on their own, and gives chase to players in boxes. The others either don't seem to notice or just attack whatever's in their path.
  • Final Boss: Of Chapter 2.
  • Living Motion Detector: Do NOT move when she is around, as she will catch on. She will notice players moving, even in boxes.
  • Smurfette Principle: The only confirmed female Rainbow Friend.
    Lookies
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lookies.png
Lighthearted, multi-colored spherical creatures that were stuffed in a storage unit in the second chapter, they were released in the third hour, forcing the players to clean up the aftermath by hunting each one down.
  • Ambiguous Situation: What are these things, anyway? They probably aren't part of the Rainbow Friends, but if not, why were they made? The fact that some of them are seen infecting the water supply during the end of the second chapter further complicates the matter.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: Red has the players collect them in order to complete their night, and due to their status as living creatures, they start rolling away from the players. They aren't exactly an example of a Living MacGuffin because they don't exactly have any apparent value.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Small little creatures with big eyes that have a soft high-pitched voice. They follow this trope to a tee.
