    Nadeshiko Kugatachi

Nadeshiko Kugatachi

Voiced by: Aya Endo

A 25-year old MWPSB Investigator with a case of amnesia. Her lost memories may have something to do with a mysterious teenager named Alpha.

  • 13 Is Unlucky: Averted. Once she learns that she is Yukari, her Crime Coefficient is a mere 13. This is despite her euthanizing patients who she knows will never wake up from their comas in a misguided attempt to help their horribly distraught families.
  • Actually, I Am Him: Or her in this case. Her real name is Yukari Himekawa, the person who created Alpha and the person Enforcer Tsurugi had been searching for.
  • Audience Surrogate: Intended as such over Takuma, though not for the typical reasons. Playing as her gives much more insight into the backstory from both her thoughts and scenes that have restricted knowledge that she, as an Investigator, has the clearance to know, plus two more endings than him. She's also a lot more tied to it than Takuma is.
  • Emotionless Girl: She emotes very little and has very downplayed reactions to even the most shocking events. Kagari wonders early on if she's supposed to be some kind of human equivalent of a Drone and jokes that she must have been built in a lab. Yayoi gets a bit offended on her behalf. She's completely emotionless if she uncovers that she's Yukari, though some routes do have her show emotion.
  • Identity Amnesia: Prior to the game, she has a case of amnesia. The only thing she knows is her name. She lost it due to a short circuit that happened while her brain was being removed to become a part of the Sibyl System.
  • Meaningful Name: Nadeshiko, considering who is voicing her.
  • Mercy Kill: As Yukari, she euthanized terminally ill patients in order to end their suffering and relieve the burdens put upon their families.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Takuma's red. She appears to suffer from sociopathy, but ends up getting them later in the game anyway. If you choose to play as her, she's still less emotional in her thoughts and can be played either way.
  • Serial Killer: While she had good intentions as Yukari, she euthanised at least 10 patients according to Kasei.

    Takuma Tsurugi

Takuma Tsurugi

Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki

A 25-year old MWPSB Enforcer, he loves to chase down women and sees himself as a womanizer.

  • The Casanova: Game information reveals that he sees himself as one in the force. He isn't.
  • Hidden Depths: He's actually a great cook, despite there being little reason to in 2112 if you don't want to.
  • This Loser Is You: He's the character who has the most viewpoints that would resonate with readers from today's age, but he's also an Enforcer who was deemed a Latent Criminal due to an obsession with a girl and isn't given as much information as Nadeshiko. Takuma's attitude towards women (men must protect women) is also called old fashioned and sexist despite still existing today. He also has six endings as opposed to Nadeshiko's eight.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Nadeshiko's blue. He's insanely emotional and thinks without acting fairly often, which is part of what had him end up as an Enforcer instead of what he used to be.

    Alpha

Alpha

Voiced by: Yūki Kaji

A 15-year old teenager who has mysterious ties to Nadeshiko, pertaining with her lost memory.

  • A God Am I: He turns into this near the end of the game when he believes he will bring happiness to everyone whether they want it or not.
  • Big Bad: He's the overarching antagonist of the game.
  • The Corrupter: He's responsible for giving the means to commit crimes to every criminal in this case.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: His cyborg form is this.
  • Unknown Character: In the Happiness Without Choice game. Not much is given, but game information reveals that he's in the island the team travels onto and his backstory is the key to the game's plot.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: His motives amount to wanting to make his "mother" happy. She wanted him to do that by making others happy.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His idea of happiness is to keep everyone's Hues down by pumping them full of a mix of stress relief drugs called Heaven's Gate.
