Pat and his family

     Postman Pat

Voiced by (English): Ken Barrie (1981-2008), Lewis MacLeod (2008-present), Stephen Magnan (movie)

The series' eponymous protagonist. Patrick "Pat" Clifton is the local postman of Greendale, as well as a devoted husband and father. While delivering letters, he always finds himself in the middle of the town's hijinx.

  • Blind Without 'Em: Pat can't see at all without his glasses. One episode has Ted Glen accompany him as a driver on his rounds after his glasses are misplaced, since if Pat can't see, he can't drive.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Never without his iconic blue uniform.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Cheerio!"
  • The Chew Toy: There are some episodes that exist solely to torture Pat. For example, in "Postman Pat's Difficult Day", his alarm clock breaks, his hat gets caught on sticky tape and the sticky tape goes all over his fingers, the parcel he was delivering to Ted falls to bits and he ends up hurting his right hand requiring Sam Waldron to drive him around.

     Jess The Cat

  • Cats Are Mean: Averted, Jess is sometimes mischievous but never mean.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: As mentioned in the opening, Postman Pat is rarely seen without his black-and-white cat.

     Sara Clifton

Voiced by (English): Carole Boyd (series), Susan Duerden (movie)
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: A variant: Sara usually wears red, which pink is derived from, while Pat wears a blue uniform.
  • Unseen No More: She's only mentioned in a couple of episodes of the first season then finally makes an appearance in "Postman Pat Takes The Bus".

     Julian Clifton

Voiced by (English): Carole Boyd (1996), Janet James (2003-present), Sandra Teles (movie)
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Meta example; in the books, he wore glasses like his father. However, in the series, he doesn't have glasses to prevent him being mixed up with Charlie Pringle.

Residents of Greendale

Introduced in Series 1 and 2

     Mrs. Goggins

Voiced by (English): Ken Barrie (1981), Carole Boyd (1996-present), Jane Carr (movie)
  • Benevolent Boss: She oversees Pat's work, and is very kind to him, as well as understanding when any mixups cause him to run behind.

    Tom and Katy Pottage
Tom voiced by (English): Ken Barrie (1981), Carole Boyd (1996), Kulvinder Ghir (2003-present)
Katy voiced by (English): Ken Barrie (1981), Carole Boyd (1996), Archie Panjabi (2003-present)

    Julia Pottage
Voiced by (English): Ken Barrie (1981), Carole Boyd (1996-present)

     Ted Glen
Voiced by (English): Ken Barrie

  • Determinator: Is always determined to anything, no matter how big or small it is.
  • Mr Fix It: He is the local mechanic of Greendale.

Introduced in Series 3 onwards

    Nisha Bains
Voiced by (English): Archie Panjabi

    Meera Bains
Voiced by (English): Archie Panjabi
  • Big Sister Instinct: She cares deeply about Nikhil's well-being. In "The Green Rabbit", she's the one to explain everything in Nikhil's baby bag to Pat, rather than Nisha.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Julian Clifton.

    Nikhil Bains
  • Companion Cube: His green stuffed rabbit, which he cherishes dearly.
  • Odd Name Out: He's the only member of his family whose given name doesn't contain an "A" (against Ajay, Nisha, and Meera).
  • Stock Sound Effects: All of Nikhil's vocal effects are stock baby sounds that can be heard in several other works.

    Amy Wrigglesworth

Voiced by (English): Angela Griffin (series), Aimee Osbourne (movie)

Characters from elsewhere

     Brad Lee
Brad Lee is a fictional British pop star who appears in the episode "Postman Pat's Pop Star Rescue"
  • The Cast Showoff: Brad Lee's voice actor shows off his singing talent in this episode, and he's pretty good at it.
  • Cool Shades: While he does wear cool-looking shades, he's still an average young pop singer
  • Pretty Boy: He actually looks pretty for a young man his age.
  • Teen Idol: He's a fictional version of a pop singer who is popular with teenagers, although basically even the children and adults of Greendale and Pencaster love him.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He is afraid of traveling in small boats, and it clearly shows.

Movie-exclusive characters

     Edwin Carbunkle
  • Big Bad: The main villain of the 2014 movie.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Tries to use his robots to swipe control of Special Delivery Service.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Played with. Edwin as a character is still pretty silly and bungling, but he's still by far the most malicious presence the franchise has ever had, and one of very few entities to intentionally put Pat's life in danger. Needless to say, when he and his robots step foot in Greendale, things become far less laid back.
  • Laughably Evil: To offset his unusually antagonistic presence in the franchise, Edwin is still a pretty comedic and snarky character, and spends a lot of the movie taking shots at the show's cozy atmosphere.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Less in the sense he is particularly sinister, but more the show itself never really has antagonists at all, and was usually very laid back fare with mild cartoon peril at worst. Edwin puts it best himself when he summons his legions of evil robots to attack Pat.
Carbunkle: The days of loveable friendly mailmen helping quaint country characters with their stupid little problems is over!

     Wilfred Thunder
Wilfred "Wilf" Thunder is a Scottish character who first appeared in the movie adaption from 2014 as Postman Pat's former nemesis. He is a music manager who manages a young pop star named Josh. He was voiced by David Tennant.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: While he tries to look and act like a bad guy, he's only just a nemesis to the mild-mannered postie.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Wilf... One whole section of the movie is dedicated to him trying to take down Pat and Jess (when he's really going after the Patbot and Jessbot instead), which leads to his plans amusingly backfiring every time. At least, until a magnet comes into the occasion...
  • Character Development: After the climax, Wilf has lost his jealousy and he became more nicer to Postman Pat and Jess.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Wilf is known to fume when things go wrong, especially when he was trying to let his young client Josh win.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Wilf looks very similar to his voice actor, only he has a soulpatch and a different hairstyle.
  • Stage Dad: While he isn't related to Josh, there are a decent amount of reviews that have mistaken him as his father instead of his manager.
