The Terrible Trio in general
- Comic Trio
- Chromatic Arrangement: Oliver wears red and blue, Mya wears yellow, and Jorge wears green.
- Band of Brothers: They became close by facing thick and thin together.
- Power Trio
- True Companions: They become this in the end.
- Like Brother and Sister: Oliver and Mya become this.

Oliver
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: During their parent's wedding, he gets distracted and climbs up a tree.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Unintentionally annoyed Mya for months, although she doesn't see him as annoying anymore.
- Chocolate-Frosted Sugar Bombs: Is seen eating sugary cereal in the last novel.
- Closet Geek: Only in the online comics. In the graphic novel, he is openly a geek.

- Aloof Big Sister: When Oliver first meets Mya he tries to get along with her, but she treats him coldly, due to being put off by his eccentric mannerisms.
- Cool Big Sis: Oliver sees her as this, and she looks after the others.
- Big Damn Heroes: Rushes in to save Oliver and Jorge from Lieutenant Rogers.
- Big Sister Instinct
- Deadpan Snarker: Has her moments.
- Jorge: If I wanted to listen to some boring English guys in tights, I'd have stayed home and watched PBS.Mya: Oh, does Sesame Street do Shakespeare?
- Didn't Want an Adventure: At first she would rather go home than travel Poptropica.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Oliver's foolish.
- Sibling Rivalry: Her and Oliver bicker throughout the novels, but they make up in the end.
- Geek: Has a love for fantasy novels.
- Happily Adopted: She's Oliver's adoptive sister, although she wasn't very happy at first.
- Heroic B So D: In the final novel, she goes through this when the Protectors headquarters is destroyed, and the map stops working.
- Platonic Declaration of Love: At the end of the final book, the three express their feelings for each other.
- Missing Mom: Her biological mom died when she was young.
- One of the Boys: Being the only girl in the group.
- Team Mom: Is older than the others and takes care of them.
- Terrified of Germs: Highly dislikes bugs.

- Wise Beyond Her Years: Her speech at the end showed how much she'd grown.
Jorge
- Big Fun: The stoutest of the three and the goofiest.
- Big Eater: And is very proud of this fact.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: In the final graphic novel, he was shown to lack real friends prior to meeting Oliver and Mya.
- Momma's Boy: His mother coddled him, although he didn't enjoy it that much.
- The Ditz: Is significantly less intelligent then his friends, although he has his moments of insight.
- Vague Age: Has said in the Comics that he was born "post Metal Gear Solid 3", which was released on November 17, 2004.
- The Heart: In the graphic novels he stops Oliver and Mya from fighting and tries to cheer the group up.
- The Baby of the Bunch: It's not known if he's the youngest of the group, but he is treated as such.
- Fat and Proud: Mentions that he's a fan of lunch, and proudly rubs his big belly.
- The Captain: Pilots the Hovercraft for a while.
Octavian
- Badass Normal: Has no superpowers, but is still able to accomplish so much.
- Driven to Suicide: In the 3rd graphic novel, after he believed he lost his chance at saving his girlfriend Paulla.
- Faux Affably Evil: In the game only.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: His love and devotion to Paulla are shown to be his only positive qualities.
- Karma Houdini: Unlike other Poptropica villains, he gets away scot-free.
- Knight Templar: Believes his actions are rightful.
- Messy Hair: His hair is really messy, notably in the novels.
- Playful Cat Smile: Has a smug one in the novels.
- Slasher Smile: Sports one on occasion in the graphic novels.
- Token Adult: Of the Mystery of the Map ensemble.
- Would Hurt a Child: Threatens to beat the children up with a boat oar near the end of the first novel.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims his motivation for trying to control Poptropica is so he can control history and prevent future disasters from happening, although he takes drastic measures to do so.
The Protectors of Poptropica
Spencer Albright
The former leader of the Protectors.- Big Good
- Cool Old Guy: Chastises a guard when he pushes Oliver for no reason, and treats the children as guests.
- Control Freak: Has an obsession with controlling everything in Poptropica. Although in the end he learns that time isn't meant to be controlled.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Loves tea.
- For Want Of A Nail: Explains that this is the reason they protect Poptropica from outsiders.
- Killed Off for Real: Well, only an alternate version of him.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: One of the few adults who try to help the kids.
Jonas
Spencer Albright's protégé.- Distressed Dude: The children save him from a crumbling building.
- Pretty Boy
- Reasonable Authority Figure: One of the few adults who try to help the kids.
Lieutenant Rogers
- Exit, Pursued by a Bear
- Killed Off for Real: Implied at the end of the second novel.
- For the Greater Good: Believes killing the children is for the greater good.
- Would Hurt a Child: Tried to kill the children.

- Crazy Cat Lady: Has many cats, and enjoys getting baby clothes for them.
- Bilingual Bonus: Refers to her son as mijo, meaning son.
- Good Parents: Despite her coddling, she loves her son and comforts him when he's sad. She has him wear safey gear when he rides a bike, and offers to hang out with him.
- Incredibly Lame Fun: Finds picking clothes for her cats entertaining. Jorge does not.
- Parental Obliviousness: Is unaware of the kid's adventure in Poptropica.
Mr. Flores
Jorge's father.- The Voiceless: Is shown once, and never speaks.
Kevin Wong
Mya's father.- Happily Married: At first with Mya's mom, but then she died. He finds love again with Oliver's mother Sandy.
- Parental Obliviousness: Is unaware of the kid's adventure in Poptropica. Also was unaware that Mya hated Oliver.
- Incredibly Lame Fun: Gets Mya an electric toothbrush for Christmas, which he seemed a bit excited about.
- Good Parents: Comforts and takes care of Mya after her mother dies.
Mya's Mom
Mya's deceased mother.- Posthumous Character: Is dead before the story began.
Sandy Hartman
Oliver's mother.- Happily Married: With Kevin.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She is blonde, and very kind to her son.
- Parental Obliviousness: Is unaware of the kid's adventure in Poptropica.
- Open-Minded Parent: Seems ok with Oliver's odd quirks.
- Good Parents: She tries to make Oliver happy after his father leaves.
Oliver Senior
Oliver's father, who had left.- Jerkass: He left because he didn't want to deal with Oliver's weird quirks. When Oliver looks into an alternate universe where his father never left, he realizes his father is a jerk.
