    Seiji Hotokeyama

Seiji Hotokeyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seiji_hotokeyama.jpg

A police detective associated with the Yozakura family. He helps cover up the family's actions in exchange for their cooperation in his investigations. He's a middle school classmate of Kyoichiro.

  • Anti-Hero: Hotokeyama has no qualms in violently subduing criminals with his own hands to arrest them, though he does this toward criminals whom evaded the law with connections and money. He explains he finds no need to abide by the law for criminals who've already broken it to escape being held accountable for their actions.
  • Bad Liar: He tries to get Taiyo to drink water filled with muscle relaxants, but he's so obvious about it and sucks at lying to the point that he simply tries to force feed it to him. Immediately afterward, he mixes a cup of water with truth serum right in front of Taiyo and expects him to drink it.
Seiji: Uh... no, no. This is... um... minerals...? It's good for you...? Er... That whatchamacallit...
    Taiyo: He sucks at lying!
Seiji: [forcing it into Taiyo's mouth] Whatever, just drink it.
Taiyo: Now you're just forcing it down!
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: In his very first scene, he's covered in the blood of the people he's beaten unconscious or to death with a hammer.
  • Cowboy Cop: He tortures and murders criminals he feels are beyond the law because of all the people they've hurt. Somehow he's managed to keep his job despite this.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He's introduced absolutely covered in blood with bloody and broken bodies littered around the floor. As his latest victim tries to beg for mercy, he asks them why he should listen to someone who ignored their own victims' pleas for their lives. He then goes on to say that he won't break this guy's jaw yet, but he still needs information out of him.
  • Mad Eye: The eye usually covered by his bangs is shown to be this, contrasting the usually stoic look his face has.
  • Secret Test of Character: His interrogation of Taiyo was meant to see if he would crack under pressure and gauge his trustworthiness. He's pleased to find that Taiyo refused to spill the beans on the Yozakuras without resorting to violence that would have given him away.
  • Seriously Scruffy: His tie is worn loose, he's constantly draped in a baggy raincoat, and his hair is always disheveled. But he's always dead serious.
  • Super-Strength: He possesses enough strength to bring down a concrete wall with a single strike from his hammer and leave a table in splinters from another one.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He makes it very clear that he loathes Kyoichiro and the feeling is mutual. But Kyoichiro is able to provide info to help Seiji with his investigations, while Seiji covers up the Yozakuras activities in return.

    Sui Aoi

Sui Aoi

Voiced by: Kōki Uchiyama (anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sui_aoi_mission_yozakura_family.PNG

An elite spy working for the government's Hinagiku division. He looks down on Taiyo's inexperience and strength, becoming a rival in the process.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: His very first act in the series has him slicing a truck cleanly in half. He later carves a perfect square into a concrete floor.
  • Aloof Ally: After their initial bad impressions, Sui and by extension the rest of the Hinagiku become allies to Taiyo and the Yozakuras, though he still calls Taiyo "filth".
  • As Lethal as It Needs to Be: Sui's sword gives Taiyo critical wounds in their first meeting, but since then Sui is able to slash others without leaving visible wounds.
  • Blade Brake: When he stops to eat lunch, he stabs his sword into the side of a building so he can lean on it and eat while in mid-air.
  • The Comically Serious: His tendency to treat everything with the utmost seriousness creates laughable dissonance when he's off the clock. He treats a hot pot like a battlefield and has to be bribed with his favorite mushrooms into using his swordsmanship to dice the food into cubes, all while announcing the technique as though he were in a fight.
  • Consummate Professional: He believes spies should have no interest in anything but their own mission. That said, he holds Mutsumi in esteem and treats her respectfully in comparison to his snide and disparaging demeanor to Taiyo.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Sui doles these out on the regular, usually to Taiyo. Even the fifth-ranked spy family is no match for him despite getting to chance to use their Combination Attack.
  • Defeat by Modesty: He resorts to this when Taiyo begins tailing him in public, slicing off all of Taiyo's clothes rather than killing him in plain view.
  • Flash Step: He specializes in Speed Blitzing his foes and cutting them down before they can react. His special technique for this, "Walking on Flowers", is taught to all members of the Hinagiku to move quickly and silently to seemingly teleport in front of their foes. But poor usage of it can injure the bones in one's feet.
  • Foil: Sui is everything Taiyo is not. Sui is cold, methodical, unflappable, experienced, and lethal. Taiyo values his new family more than anything while Sui is Married to the Job.
  • Good Is Not Nice: As a government agent, Sui works to stop terrorists, smugglers, and other criminals. But he's also a Jerkass who wouldn't hesitate to try to kill Taiyo if he gets in the way of his mission.
  • Hero Antagonist: His first appearance has him working to prevent a bioterrorist attack, only to threaten to murder Nanao for consuming a bioweapon to detoxify it under the understandable fear that Nanao would fail to destroy it.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: He can draw his katana, slice someone's clothes off, and sheath it before anyone can see that he did anything.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He wields one that's an Absurdly Sharp Blade.
  • Married to the Job: He believes in cutting out everything but what he needs to know to do his job. As a result, he's never seen interacting with anyone but other spies and remains a Consummate Professional on the job.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the cold and reserved Blue Oni to his partner Oga's cheerful and friendly Red Oni.
  • The Rival: He's Taiyo's first proper rival in the story. The Curb-Stomp Battle Taiyo suffered against him cements Sui as someone for him to beat.
  • The Stoic: He makes it a point to remain as unemotional and detached as possible, seeing it as necessary to his job as a spy.
  • Worthy Opponent: After Taiyo finally makes a countermeasure for Sui's "Walking on Flowers" Speed Blitz and later imitating it himself, Sui is impressed enough to give Taiyo his begrudging respect.

    Oga Inugami

Oga Inugami

Voiced by: Daiki Hamano (anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oda_inugami_yozakura_family.PNG

An elite spy working for the Japanese government's elite Hinagiku division and Sui's cheerful partner.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: His friendly demeanor belies his ability to kill without remorse, immediately flinging his chain at Nanao without a second thought and berating Taiyo for getting in the way. That said, he still doesn't like to hurt people he'd much rather be allies with and rushes to treat Taiyo during their confrontation at a graveyard.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's overly friendly and quite scatterbrained, forgetting that he placed his glasses on his own head until Sui points it out to him. Despite this, he is an elite spy and Sui's partner.
  • Chain Pain: His personal weapon is a chain with a weight at the end for clobbering his foes.
  • Nice Guy: In stark contrast to Sui, Oga is absurdly cheerful and exuberant, gleefully greeting Taiyo in the middle of a mad scientist's lab, wanting his autograph, and jumping at the chance to work together.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Oga is the least serious member of the Hinagiku, serving as the comedic foil to Sui's seriousness.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the cheerful and friendly Red Oni to his partner Sui's cold and reserved Blue Oni.
  • Satellite Character: He gets considerably less focus than his partner and is mainly there to be a foil to Sui.
  • Super-Senses: He's able to tell exactly how many people are coming down a hallway and what direction they're coming from by the sound of their footsteps, smell their gun cartridges to determine that they're armed, and even tell the exact temperature of the air.

    Rin Fudo

Rin Fudo

Voiced by: Romi Park (anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rin_fudo_yozakura_family.PNG

The general manager of the Hinagiku and Sui's boss. She's an elite spy and Kyoichiro's long-time equal and rival, and like him she also possesses an intense fondness for Mutsumi.

  • Action Girl: Young, beautiful, and badass. She gathers the ingredients for her own hotpots by beating bears and sharks to death with her bare hands.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Rin begs for forgiveness after Mutsumi threatens to never talk to her again for punching Taiyo unconscious.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She's clearly into Mutsumi, but it's unclear whether Rin is solely into her or if she has other love interests.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: She's the head of the Hinagiku and Kyoichiro's equal in single combat. Their battle is so intense that even Sui can't get close without being blown away.
  • Berserk Button: Kyoichiro is this to her. The mere mention of his name is enough to foul her mood, though she can be appeased with sufficiently good alcohol. Even then, things quickly fall apart after she calls him out for his treatment of Taiyo and picks a fight.
  • Big Eater: Judging by the fact that she brings bears and sharks to a hotpot dinner and piles rice into Taiyo's bowl until it's three times as tall as the bowl itself, it's safe to say that Rin likes to eat.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Hard-Drinking Party Girl? Check. Sweet Tooth? Check. Incredibly strong and badass superspy who's the head of an organization for elite government superspies? Check.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Shouts, "RIN PUNCH!" when punching away Steel Spider.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears an eyepatch over her right eye and is an extremely skilled and strong spy.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She's willing to tolerate Kyoichiro so long as he brings his family's special bland of "Yozakura Blizzard" sake and parties at a hotpot dinner until she passes out.
  • Shipper on Deck: Rin takes a shine to Taiyo after seeing his resolve to protect Mutsumi, protecting them from Kyoichiro's wrath after Mutsumi gives Taiyo a peck on the cheek.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's as tall as Kyoichiro and is noted to have a "prized body".
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: She's this to Kyoichiro, having gone to the same school together and wanting to rip him limb from limb for hogging Mutsumi to himself. Rin and Kyoichiro's mutual animosity is played more for slapstick comedy than anything, with Rin calling him a "sister freak" while Kyoichiro refers to her as a "vulgar female gorilla".
  • Sweet Tooth: Rin loves sweets and devours an entire cake on her own.
  • Women Are Wiser: She's just as crazy for Mutsumi as Kyoichiro is, but ultimately becomes a Shipper on Deck for her and Taiyo. Rin even goes so far as to hold Kyoichiro back while the couple flees.
