    Fortress Dwellers

These are the main series' protagonists: the faction of Lords who reside in Budapest, and their love interests. Characters are listed in rough order of the book they starred in note .

Ashlyn Darrow

Protagonist of The Darkest Night and Maddox's lover.

  • Power Incontinence: While standing on a given spot, Ashlyn can hear the thoughts of everyone who's ever been in her place. These thoughts constantly run through her mind, making it difficult for her to focus on the present and (in the case of especially disturbing thoughts) act normal. Strangers who don't know about Ashlyn's powers typically assume she has schizophrenia.
  • Silence Is Golden: Has several monologues to this effect. Her entire life has been controlled by her powers, and after first meeting Maddox, she spends minutes just reveling in how blissfully quiet everything is.
  • Team Mom: She's a deeply empathetic, nurturing person who's been alone her whole life. Naturally- after realizing who they are- she jumps at the chance to join the Lords' makeshift 'family'.

Anya

Protagonist of The Darkest Kiss, goddess of Anarchy, and 's lover

Danika Ford

Protagonist of The Darkest Pleasure, the current All-Seeing Eye, and Reyes' lover.

  • Mama Bear: She is fiercely protective of her family, and in fact allies with the Hunters in the (misguided) belief it will protect them from Aeron.

Sabin

Protagonist of The Darkest Whisper, keeper of Doubt, and Gwen's lover

Gwendolyn Skyhawk

Protagonist of The Darkest Whisper, and Sabin's lover.

  • Angst? What Angst?: She takes gleeful vengeance on the man who imprisoned her for a year...and then any trauma she feels from the experience just kind of fades away as the narrative progresses.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She is the youngest (and most peaceful) Skyhawk, so all her sisters staunchly protect her.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Gwen hates Harpies' bloodlust, and many of her life choices are a conscious effort to distance herself from the sociopathic hedonism other Harpies indulge in.

Aeron

Protagonist of The Darkest Passion, keeper of Wrath, and Olivia's lover.

  • Doting Parent: Adores Legion, often buys her presents, and instinctively defends her destructive tendencies.
Kaia: She bit me. She fucking bit me!
Aeron: I'll deal with her. Not you.
Kaia: No, you'll baby her like you always do!
  • Insecure Love Interest: Finds it difficult to believe that a good...being like Olivia could love him- much less Fall for him.
  • Tsundere: Acts deliberately rude to Olivia, in the hope that she will give up wooing him and go back to the Heavens. (Lysander convinced him that she'd be happier and safer there.) It doesn't work, partly because he is very attracted to her.

Olivia

Protagonist of The Darkest Passion and Aeron's lover.

  • Covert Pervert: One of the reasons she Fell was so she could experience sex. However, since she is angelic in most other respects, the people she meets are often surprised by this.
  • Fallen Angel: A benevolent example; she did not reject God, she simply wanted to be mortal, and His council acknowledge this.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: To Aeron...and everyone else, as she was initially employed as a joy-bringer.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Goes something like this; 1) Fall, 2) ???, 3) Become Aeron's lover and live happily ever after with him. She's at a loss when Aeron (initially) resists her advances.
  • Mysterious Watcher: For some time before Falling, she regularly observed Aeron- initially to plan her assassination of him, and then for more...selfish reasons. Aeron senses something watching him, so he's pretty annoyed and scared when Olivia reveals herself.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: She spent most of her existence only seeing the good aspects of humanity, and finds them difficult to reconcile with what she knows of the bad.

Gideon

Protagonist of The Darkest Lie, keeper of Lies, and Scarlet's lover.

  • Color Motif: Gideon's had a marked preference for blue clothing ever since he spoke to an imprisoned child (Scarlet) who'd never seen the sky.
"That day, blue didn’t start to represent...freedom to me."
  • Cursed with Awesome: For the most part, he loves the immortality and social leverage granted him by Lies.
  • Living Lie Detector: Over the centuries, he developed enough experience with lying to instantaneously tell when other people are doing it. However, his intuition is limited in that he can't recognize lies from literal gods or someone who genuinely believes what they're saying is true.

Scarlet

Protagonist of The Darkest Lie, keeper of Nightmares, and Gideon's lover.

  • Fake Memories: Courtesy of her aunt, Mnemosyne: she brainwashed Scarlet into believing that she had a husband (Gideon) who abandoned her and their son, Steel. To add insult to injury, Mnemosyne's powers only work if the target wants to believe the memories being implanted. Scarlet's own desperation for love is what made her vulnerable to them.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: She was born inside Tartarus, and was trapped there for decades before finally escaping.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Scarlet has never been loved, by family or peers, and this has long since made her bitter and paranoid. After (truly) falling in love with Gideon, she becomes immune to Mnemosyne's psychological abuse because she finally has memories worth preserving.

Paris

Protagonist of The Darkest Seduction, keeper of Promiscuity, and Sienna's lover.

Sienna Blackstone

Protagonist of The Darkest Seduction, keeper of Wrath, and Paris' lover.

Torin

Protagonist of The Darkest Touch, keeper of Disease, and Keeley's lover.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: One of his jobs is to monitor the globe for signs of Hunters and/or fellow Lords. His diligence in doing so is often the only reason his True Companions can effectively fight the former.
  • Casual Kink: Is not opposed to consensual voyeurism or BDSM.
  • Friends with Benefits: He and Cameo have a brief sexual relationship; it's built on mutual respect and attraction, but nothing more than that. They're both aware of this.
  • Mission Control: Being unable to leave the fortress (and thereby risk spreading disease), he contents himself with manning the many cameras and traps that protect it.
  • Mr. Exposition: He must often alert his comrades to events in the outside world, and in fact placed multiple speakers around the fortress for this purpose.
  • Properly Paranoid: Ashlyn is initially confused as to why Torin swathes himself in full-body robes and insists that she keep far away from him...until she learns just how devastating his powers are.
  • The Smart Guy: He knows more about technology than any of his comrades, and enough about playing the stock market to fund their endeavours.

Amun

Protagonist of The Darkest Touch and keeper of Secrets.

  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He's spoken only once: to reassure his friends that Sabin is still alive.
  • Too Much Information: Perpetually feels this way because of his telepathy: he hears all thoughts within a given radius. Even those of his friends' sex lives.
  • The Voiceless: If Amun talks, he must give voice to all the secrets of the world immediately after. Such a process is exhausting and time-consuming, so he obviously refrains from speaking as much as possible.

Cameo

Keeper of Misery and Lazarus' lover.

  • Friends with Benefits: She and Torin have a brief sexual relationship; it's built on mutual respect and attraction, but nothing more than that. They're both aware of this.
  • Glory Hound: Was one, pre-Box. Everyone knew the job of guarding dimOuniak would be assigned to the gods' best warrior, and when Cameo was denied the position, she felt snubbed. The honors and power Cameo was already showered with weren't enough for her- so she murdered Pandora to prove her superiority.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Cameo resented Pandora not for being a female warrior (as the other Lords did) but because she believed herself more worthy of guarding dimOuniak than Pandora.
  • Heartbroken Badass: She's a veteran warrior...who, according to Olivia, cries herself to sleep each night.
  • One of the Guys: Despite the Lords' admitted sexism pre-Box, they wholly accepted her as a comrade-in-arms and feel no qualms about engaging in typically 'masculine' activities (drinking, watching porn, cracking crude jokes, etc) around her.
  • The Quiet One: Simply hearing Cameo's voice is extremely depressing for everyone around her, so she usually refrains from speaking.

    Greek Immortals

The various gods, rogue Lords, monsters and Titans who are part of the Greek pantheon.

Galen

Keeper of Hope, leader of the Hunters, and Legion's lover.

  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: He is a handsome, winged man whose sheer voice inspires joy and confidence in people. Traits which he uses to make hundreds of people die for him and his cause.

    Abrahamic Immortals

Those angels and demons who either work for (G)od or work to undermine Him. note

William

Father of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, adopted son of Hades and brother of Lucifer.

  • Everyone Has Standards: He's nonchalant about sleeping with married women. Pedophilia? Not so much.
  • Really Gets Around: The list of husbands he's cuckolded increases with every book.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Invoked. He owns a prophetic book that describes his future (and the true nature of his curse), but refuses to actually read the thing for fear of making things worse.

Legion (#516 of the Dark Crusaders of Envy and Need) / "Honey"

A demon who befriended Aeron and later became Galen's lover.

  • Gender Reveal: Because of her (initially) nonhuman appearance and rough voice, everyone else assumes that she's male until Legion corrects them.
  • Yandere: Basically, the only reason she hasn't tried to murder everyone else in Aeron's life is because she doesn't consider them romantic threats.

Lysander

A high-ranking angel who Olivia is subordinate to. Much to his shame, he is the lover of Bianka Skyhawk.

  • Day in the Limelight: Lysander is a protagonist in the short story The Darkest Angel.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's not mean so much as utterly unwilling to let any emotion or empathy interfere with his duty to Heaven. Or what he believes is his duty.

    The Hunters

A faction of people who blame the Lords for all human suffering and therefore seek to kill them. The faction is mostly comprised of mortals, but its allies and forced breeding programs have created a small army of supernatural/demigod Child Soldiers who also fight for the cause.Unbeknowst to the Hunters, their leader is a Lord himself, and he's using them as pawns in Ancient Greek politics.

Dean Stefano

A human man who's second-in-command of the Hunters. He was married to Darla before her death.

  • Hypocrite: He had no compunctions about cheating on his wife, but when she did the same...ohhh boy.
  • The Lost Lenore: Subverted. He became a lot more fanatical about Hunting after Darla's death, but by her own account he was a neglectful husband who didn't have the slightest regard for her feelings.

    Minor Characters

Mortals and supernatural beings who don't fit in any of the other categories.

"Gilly" / Gillian Shaw

A teenage girl who's friends with Danika and Anya. Because of this, she eventually gets swept up in the main plotline.

  • Broken Bird: As a result of her father's sexual abuse.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's 17, so all of the protagonists are older (and more knowledgeable, and more badass...) than her. As a result, they feel very protective of her and try to censor their conversations when she's around.
Ashlyn: It feels weird talking about [sex] with you.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She is very possessive of William, even though they're not in a relationship. Fortunately, she's usually able to confine these tendencies to her own thoughts.
  • Older Than They Look: She's 16 in her first appearance, and got a job by pretending to be a legal adult.
  • The Runaway: Type 2. She left her family for a very good reason and tries to think of them as little as possible.

The Skyhawks

A family of Harpies who work as a mercenary gang.

  • Evil Matriarch: Tabitha is the original Skyhawk, and the oldest one still alive. Even the other Skyhawks- her own daughters- simultaneously respect and fear her.
