Main characters
μ (Mu)
Voiced by: Rie Takahashi (Japanese), Bryn Apprill (English)
An amnesiac Player who Echo finds in a junk heap. She adopts the name μ (Mu) after the symbol on her necklace.- Amnesiac Hero: She wakes up with no knowledge of who she is or even what a Player is. She doesn't seem to mind.
- Antagonist Title: Calls herself “Listeners” when she is Brainwashed and Crazy.
- Big Bad: Becomes this due to being Brainwashed and Crazy.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Near the climax of the series.
- Covert Pervert: At first she gets abashed and covers her face when she thinks Echo is about to show her his privates (and not a book about Players). Then she uncovers her face and starts smiling while she still has the wrong idea. Afterward, she's visibly dissappointed.
- "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: Sings the ending theme of every episode.
- Long-Lost Relative: Averted. She is believed to be the younger sister of Jimi Stonefree. In actuality, she is the King of the Earless
Echo Rec
Voiced by: Ayumu Murase (Japanese), Justin Briner (English)
A scrap gatherer from Liverchester fascinated by Players and Equipment.- Ascended Fanboy: His obsession with Players and Equipment and desire to see them in action finally paid off when he discovered Mu, who used his Equipment. Upon recognising the Neubaten Sisters, he asks for their autographs, even though they were quite openly being antagonistic.
- Cowardly Sidekick: The guy is scared of everything. Even after leaving Lvierchester and supposedly finding his resolve in the first episode... the second episode opens with Echo freaking out about what they did and worrying about it.
- Near-Death Experience: Echo almost falls to his death when trying to deliver his Equipment to Mu. The experience results in him realizing that he doesn't want to die having never left his hometown, and convinces him to chase his dream.
- No Social Skills: The kid can't read a room. His overeagerness about meeting a Player makes Mu think he wants something else from her, especially when he starts unbuttoning his overalls just to show her a book.
Liverchester
Swell Rec
Voiced by: Rina Sato (Japanese), Morgan Garrett (English)
Echo's older sister and a bartender.- The Bartender: Is a bartender and is very helpful to Mu, telling her how to get out of town while sayign she'll be allowed to stay if she changes her mind. She also is supportive of Echo.
- Cool Big Sis: She's supportive of Echo's dreams and even seems to be his Parental Substitute.
- Nice Girl: She's always friendly and is even able to calm down McGee and his strong man when they come around about to smash her bar up.
Mayor McGee
Voiced by: Yuichi Nagashima (Japanese), Mark Stoddard (English)
The grumpy mayor of Echo's hometown and his boss at the scrap-heap.- Fantastic Racism: He really dislikes players after the destruction they caused near Liverchester.
- Hidden Depths: Despite his generally hostile and even bullying nature, he seems proud of Echo and Mu running away to the wider world despite them causing the destruction of the beloved town monument.
Players
Jimi Stonefree
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese), Lee George (English)
The most powerful of the Players, who was the lead Player behind the Fest, a plan to eradicate the Earless. He is now missing, and has been dubbed the King of the Earless. He's later revealed to be Mu's older brother
- The Ace: He's outright said to be the most powerful Player.
- Long-Lost Relative: He's believed to be Mu's older brother. He's actually the older brother of Janis.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: It's implied that he went rogue during the Fest and caused it to fail, destroying Liverchester.
- Shout-Out: His first name borrows from Jimi Hendrix, and his last name is the named after one of his songs.
Neubaten Sisters
Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara (Ein), Yōko Hikasa (Stür), Tomoyo Kurosawa (Zende) (Japanese), Mikaela Krantz (Ein), Anastasia Muñoz (Stür), Sarah Wiedenheft (Zende) (English)
Three Player sisters sent to capture Mu.- The Faceless: They all wear masks that cover their faces.
- Large Ham: All three are very dramatic and prone to over-emoting with with their body language.
- Master of Illusion: Their Equipment can create very realistic illusions, such as trapping Echo in an imaginary building or tricking Mu into believing Echo was unconscious.
- Sibling Team: They talk and fight together all the time.
Bilin and Kevin Valentine
Voiced by: Nana Mizuki (Bilin), Kōichi Yamadera (Kevin) (Japanese), Caitlin Glass (Bilin), Ian Sinclair (Kevin) (English)
Bilin is a Player and the most powerful of her country, which Kevin is the former ruler of, while also being her partner. After a failed plan by Kevin to rid the world of the Earless devastated much of the world, creating the scrap yards that Echo is so familiar with in Liverchester, the two now work to recover the Equipment scattered in the aftermath.
- Battle Couple: While he manages her equipment, the two are also a couple, and likely because of this assume that Echo and Mu are in the same situation.
- Generation Xerox: Mu and Echo are basically a younger version of Bilin and Kevin, being a female Player with a male partner who handles their Equipment, with the Player having struggled with the idea of losing their partner and the Player beign the more passive individual in their relationship with a strong-headed woman.
- Gratuitous English: Both of them insert English into their dialogue for no apparent reason, especially Bilin.
