The Imperial Guard serves as the Empress's personal military, exacting her judgement on individuals and clans that have broken the laws of the land. It consists of people from all clans who protect the Empress at all times, and overseers who delegate her will.

    General
  • Bling of War: Downplayed and justified. While the large capes attached to their armor would be a liability in battle, their armor is otherwise fairly practical. And more importantly, much of their work is political or ceremonial in nature.
  • Cadre of Foreign Bodyguards: Downplayed. While they accept recruits from a great variety of clans, most of their membership are Vel'Sharen.
  • Highly-Conspicuous Uniform: Justified. Their armor stands out, but as they serve to enact the Empress' will, they're meant to.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: They lost a great many of their number in the Nidraa'chal War and were nearly destroyed in the District War. While efforts have been made in-story to rebuild it, the Guard is very obviously a shadow of its former glory.
  • Purple Is Powerful: While the Vel'Sharen typically use teal in their attire, the Imperial Guard use purple, highlighting their loyalty to the Empress.
  • Praetorian Guard: Though the Empress is also the Illharess of the Vel'Sharen, the Imperial Guard serve the Empress specifically, not the clan as a whole.
  • The Remnant: Most of them fell defending the Dome in the closing days of the District War.

    Captains

Nir'naya

One of Diva'ratrika's bodyguards. She was present with Mikilu in Chapter 1 during her disgrace at the Sharen sisters' party. Unlike Mikilu, she chose not to leave the Sharen and remained one of the Imperial bodyguards (the implication is that she was given Mikilu's old position.) Recently showed up in Chapter 41 after a long absence.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Possibly, since Sarv'swati tells her that she finally got her wish to be the head of the Imperial Guards, albeit with a fake Empress.
  • Come with Me If You Want to Live: Chapter 45 makes it clear that she was the one who showed up at the end of Chapter 44 to rescue Sarv'swati.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Seems to be developing this between her loyalty for the deceased Diva'ratrika and her daughters. Evidently retains some loyalty for Sarv'swati, as shown by her rescuing Sarv'swati from the Council Dome at the end of Chapter 44. She ultimately gets sick of working for Snadhya'rune and joins Chrys'tel in the final attack on the Nidraa'chal.
  • Flechette Storm: She's seen using mana controlled versions of these.
  • Heel Realization: Looks to be the case for her as of Chapter 30.
  • Indulgent Fantasy Segue: She imagines killing Fake!Diva'ratrika.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's one of the only people that knows for certain that Diva'ratrika is dead though it's uncertain exactly when she found out.
  • The Speechless: Her tongue is cut out by the Sarghress torturers during her imprisonment, costing her her ability to speak.
  • Token Minority: Looks more drowolath than other Dutan'vir, if she is in fact one, this was probably why the Sharen sisters thought that they could use her as their pawn.
  • Turn Coat: She is implied to have betrayed the Empress's loyalists among the Imperial Guard in order to claim Miki'lu's position for herself.
  • Unwitting Pawn: For the Sharen sisters' coup. She believed that she was staying loyal to Diva'ratrika by remaining behind, but it looks like now she is beginning to regret her actions.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: She betrayed the old guard in order to claim Mikilu's position as their captain. But as a consequence, she is stuck with the dubious honour of being the guard to a fake queen instead of her rightful empress and has been caught in the middle of the Sharen sisters' petty power struggles.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Threatened with this by Sarv'swati if she doesn't keep the fake!Diva'ratrika under control.
