The main protagonist who finds herself getting wrapped up in the fishing club.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her friends and family refer to her as "Hina".
  • Berserk Button: While she's normally reserved and good-natured, she absolutely despises losing and gets very hot-tempered when a fish gets away, a fact Yuki points out multiple times in episode 8.
  • Color Failure: Happens to her whenever a bug or other kind of creature crawls onto her.
  • Cowardly Lion: She is very eager to learn fishing in spite of her fears towards bugs and certain sea creatures.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She is very prone to fainting, tripping, and accidentally knocking people (mainly Natsumi) with her fishing rod.
  • Nice Girl: She is a very kind and caring person.
  • Shrinking Violet: While opening up to others isn't too difficult for her, she's still fairly shy, mainly due to her cowardly nature.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Defied. Hina reveals she did check out the crafts club once and decided not to join upon seeing the only club members were boys.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Upon moving to the town, Hinata finds herself unnerved by several sea creatures especially octopi and larger fish.

     Natsumi Hodaka
Voiced by: Natsumi Kawaida (Japanese), Gina Bowes (English)

Hinata's childhood friend.

  • Cute Little Fangs: She has one on the left of her face.
  • Genki Girl: Is very energetic and determined when it comes to fishing.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When studying, she becomes more serious and less carefree.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses / Smarter Than You Look: As the series goes on it's shown despite her carefree and energetic nature Natsumi is actually one of the top students in her grade, leading Hina to quote the latter trope word for word, and it's emphasized by the series further showing Natsumi actually wears contacts at school but wears glasses at home when Hina comes over to study with her.

     Yuki Kuroiwa
Voiced by: Yū Sasahara (Japanese), Jessica D. Stone (English)

The club's lazy and often sly president.

  • Animal Motifs: Foxes due to her trickster nature.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Despite her laid-back attitude, she is a very effective teacher, unlike Makoto who, while also knowledgeable of the subject, goes for more wide-winded explanations.
  • The Gadfly: She is well-aware of Hinata's squeamishness for fish and other aquatic animals, and occasionally teases her.
  • Greed: When she sees that Hina's talent was creating animal plushies, she thinks about selling them for profit. Hina was able to pick up on this because of her fox ears and tail appearing again.
  • Leitmotif: A thinly-veiled riff on "Foxey Lady" plays whenever she acts shady, to complement her animal motif.
  • Sprouting Ears: Whenever she acts extra shady. She sprouting fox ears and a tail.

     Makoto Ohno
Voiced by: Satomi Akesaka (Japanese), Lauren Landa (English)

A knowledgeable second-year member of the Breakwater Club.

  • D-Cup Distress: Is rather quick to be embarrassed when anyone remarks about her large chest.
  • Expy: Looks an awful lot like Sumika Murasame.
  • Gentle Giant: The tallest member of the Breakwater Club but also undoubtedly the nicest, even compared to Hina who can be sassy and blunt at times.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Is quite tall for her age proving to be about the same height or even taller than some of the adults.
  • In the Blood: Her love and knowledge of fishing is often attributed to the fact her father is a fishmonger.
  • Irony: Makoto loves fishing but can't stand getting into water.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Light always reflects on her glasses, obscuring her eyes. However, she is one of the nicest characters in the show.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is very quiet and doesn't talk much.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: It's eventually revealed that the reason she wears a life jacket when fishing is due to an intense fear of getting into water, caused by falling into the ocean as a child.

Other characters

     Sayaka Kotani
Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (Japanese), Cherami Leigh (English)

The club's advisor and school nurse.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: In spite of her more eccentric and childish antics, she's shown to take her swimming lessons to the Breakwater club very seriously and shows to be a competent teacher when the situation is needed.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Reduced to one because of her alcohol addiction. In episode 8, she gets her crab sticks taken so that the Breakwater Club could use them as bait to catch freshwater prawn, and Yuki tries to sucker her into a deal that would leech at her savings in return for getting seafood. When she asks if that meant she could also drink beer, she gets ignored.
    • Yuki in particular likes to bring up how Sayaka isn't married much to her ire.
    • During the 9th episode, she's slammed to the school pool twice, first by Makoto (who was told to jump to the pool with a special lifesaver to surpass her fear of water), then by other three (who were imitating Makoto). To add salt to the injury, since Hina, Natsumi and Yuki used the lifesavers too (since inflating them was specially expensive), she also loses money, which end with her angrily remarking to the club that they will have to use their funds to pay her for the lifesavers.
  • The Dreaded: Played for Laughs. Makoto and Yuki fear her cause she only hangs out with them to have free food and drink beer, annoying them and eating whatever they capture. It doesn't takes long for Hina and Natsumi to realize how terrible she is either.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Always has her eyes closed except when she becomes drunk.
    • Though she is shown with her eyes open when she is being serious in teaching the girls to swim.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While she's technically a member of the club in virtue of being the advisor, the four girls don't tend to enjoy her presence much due her antics and prefer to exclude her from their activities. The few times they do contact her, it's usually because they need something from her and she's usually ignored afterwards.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She was a lifeguard back in her college days meaning that she was perfect to teach the Breakwater Club the basics of swimming.
    • She is also an adept hunter promising to bring the girls deer meat someday.
  • Manchild: While she can be a competent and respectable adult when she wants, most of the time she's an annoying drunkard bothering a group of minors and acting half her age, while stealing their food and making them improper requests.
  • Old Maid: She's at least in her mid twenties yet is still single. This is a sore point for her, and gets mad anytime Yuki reminds her of this.
  • Sensei-chan: The club advisor and school nurse, Kotani-sensei. When she first appears, she seems to be a well-mannered, demure woman. But the mere sound of her car approaching sends the stoic Yuki into a tizzy. As soon as Kotani gets a whiff of seafood, she guzzles a shopping bag full of 40ozs, leches all over Hina and Natsumi, devours the food they caught (including Hina's prized clam), and then bails with a cheery goodbye.
  • Thank Your Prey: When she kills a boar in a side chapter, she says a prayer over it before she starts the butchering.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She is a heavy drinker. One of the first things she does when she is invited to eat with the fishing club is buying 40 oz of beer.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Though she normally displays her eyes shut, the times when she opens them they are revealed to be narrow and pointed, to contrast her normally calm appearance when her eyes are closed.
