Civilians

    Chloe Pierce

Chloe Pierce

A journalist from Florida whose fiancé committed suicide after coming into contact with the Honest World Foundation, prompting her to investigate them.

  • Driven to Suicide: She attempts to commit suicide in the first issue, but survives.
  • Queer Establishing Moment: Most of her romantic partners in the comic are men, but she kisses Killian later in the comic.
  • The Unfettered: At the start of the series, she has lost just about everything that mattered to her, meaning the Honest World Foundation doesn't have anything to use against her.

    Avil Demakos

Avil Demakos

A detective from Florida; an ally of Chloe and later her boyfriend.

  • Fair Cop: He is a police detective and a very handsome man.
  • Friend on the Force: He's a detective who's always willing to help Chloe. He even travels all the way to Chicago to help her in the finale.

    The Haverlin Brothers

The Haverlin Brothers

Chloe's neighbors.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: They're really friendly and caring guys, but not afraid to put up a fight if they or Chloe are seriously threatened.
  • Nice Guy: As Chloe puts it, their mother raised them well. They saved Chloe when she tried to commit suicide and are always ready to help.
  • Those Two Guys: They live together and are almost never seen apart.

The Honest World Foundation

    Astrid Mueller

Astrid Mueller

The founder and leader of the Honest World Foundation; previously a gothic horror novelist.

  • Celibate Hero: Abstains from romantic attachments and close friendships in order to commit to stopping the entities.
  • Emotionless Girl: She rarely displays much emotion.
  • The Gadfly: She has a habit of getting under people's skin by asking invasive, personal questions.
  • Good Is Not Nice: She may be humanity's best defense against the Entities, but she isn't above manipulating and blackmailing her followers to do what needs to be done.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: She doesn't like to swear.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Sort of; while the accusations against her organization of blackmail, manipulation and a cult-like nature are well-founded, the existence of the Entities and her battle against them are unknown to the public.
  • Nerves of Steel: Frequently stares down demons and mortal danger without so much as batting an eye.
  • Pet the Dog: She is incredibly ruthless, but also capable of genuine kindness if it's for someone who isn't a threat to her and if it doesn't get in the way of her battle with the Entities.
    • She spares an assassin sent to kill her because his wife was being held hostage by Wenuka's organization; he and the wife are later seen as members of the Honest World Foundation.
    • During a clean room session with a new recruit, she lies and tells the recruit that her suicidal husband, who tried to get her to commit double suicide with him but only died himself, is glad that she lived (Astrid had no idea what he really thought, but convinced the recruit that she spoke to the husband from beyond the grave).
  • Smart People Play Chess: She's an avid chess player; even plays a more difficult variant with fairy pieces.note

    Killian Reed

Killian Reed

One of Astrid's closest Rooks and confidantes.

    Duncan

Duncan

Another of Astrid's closest Rooks.

  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He always dresses in impeccable suits with waistcoats (usually without the jacket).
  • The Big Guy: He's by far the most muscular member of Astrid's protective detail.
  • Manly Gay: He's in a relationship with Raven and one of the most skilled fighters in the comic as well as a former special forces commander.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Has an impressive beard and is one of the strongest of Astrid's followers.
  • The Mole: He was an informant to the Entities for a while, when they were threatening his boyfriend, Raven.

    Capone

Capone

One of Astrid's Rooks.

    Anika Wells

Anika Wells

One of Astrid's earliest allies who was abducted and experimented on by the Entities.

  • Body Horror: Because of what the Entities did to her, the right half of her body ages normally, but the left half ages much faster and now looks like an old crone.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: She begs Astrid to end her life, but Astrid can't bring herself to do it.
  • Morality Pet: She is one of the few people to whom Astrid is consistently nice and caring without any intimidation or expecting anything in return.
  • Rapid Aging: Half her body ages much slowly than the other.

    Raven

Raven

The team leader of the clean room control staff.

  • Mission Control: He and his team oversee the clean room's functioning while it is being used and act as a connection between the room and the outside world.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: At one point, he shows up to a meeting and doesn't realize that he's not wearing pants until someone points it out to him.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Constantly horny but is not a bad guy.

Entities

    In General

In General

  • Biomanipulation: They can manipulate the flesh of humans, even living ones, and twist it into horrific forms.
  • Kill and Replace: They have been doing this for years, discreetly replacing people throughout the world.
  • Kryptonite Factor: An expensive perfume called "White Mist" smells terrible for them and apparently burns them like acid to the touch; because of this, Astrid always wears lots of it.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: They can disguise themselves as humans.

    SPOILER VILLAIN

Derica Mueller

Astrid's niece by her brother; also a member of the Entitites.

  • Brainy Baby: At least presents as a baby, but can speak like an adult and lead the Entities.
  • Evil Nephew: Astrid's niece and is a nasty being who wants to make all of humanity suffer, especially her aunt.

    The Surgeon

The Surgeon

  • Evil Old Folks: While his actual age is unknown, he appears as an old man and is one of the nastier Entities.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Unlike most seen Entities (except for ones posing as humans), he is usually only kind of human-like, but his face is twisted and his skin is a sickly shade of grey.

Other

    Reston Wenuka

Reston Wenuka

The leader of a Christian(-ish) self help organization in Texas.

  • Foil: To Astrid; both are leaders of manipulative self-help movements similar to cults, but unlike Astrid, he has no good intentions or redeeming qualities; he is just a greedy, amoral con man.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: His organization sells bottled water which, he admits in private, is 99% tap water from one of the most polluted water sheds in Colorado.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He thinks his whole competition with Astrid is just a matter of two cults trying to scam as much money as possible out of as many people as possible; little does he know that Astrid is waging a war against an infiltrating alien race.

    Artus Greenhand

Artus Greenhand

An obsessive fan of Astrid.

  • Evil Redhead: His hair is red like Astrid's and is a deranged bastard.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: He refers to women as "critters" and genuinely doesn't see anything wrong with killing them.
  • Serial Killer: He has been abducting women, dressing them and even stapling wigs to their scalps to make them look like Astrid and torturing them to death.
