She broke away from her former self and past confusion. She will go toward a brighter tomorrow with an unwavering heart. She grasps her greatsword tight to protect all that is beautiful and give this sad story a happy ending.
It sure isn't all sunshine and rainbows, but there are people who taught me to never give up. They've been guiding me and showing me all the beautiful things in this world. I love them, and I love what they love. We're connected by this sword. It will burn up the darkness to make way for light! This will be... our path back home!
Kiana Kaslana's "No More Holding Back" Speech in the "Everlasting Flames" short.

Honkai Impact 3rd is an amazing story about overcoming despair and perservering through with your ideals of fighting for all that's beautiful in the world. With a side of asskicking with superpowered girls in battlesuits, of course.

It is also the game that put miHoYo on the international spotlight before going for even more widespread fame with Genshin Impact, revolutionizing mobile gaming with cutting edge graphics and gameplay ahead of its time and impressing anime fans with the occasional full-blown CGI animation sequence.

    Short Animations
  • "Reburn" note :
    • Throughout the video, Kiana does not lose her cool against the Arhat, even when the giant mech throws a train car at her. While stopping time to avoid its grasp, she even takes time to drink a soda can that stopped midair (in an early version, she even lets out a beergasm-like reaction taken straight out of Neon Genesis Evangelion).
    • While diving straight into the train car that's thrown at her, we are treated to a glorious Transformation Sequence as Kiana's battlesuit slowly morphs into Knight Moonbeam. The Arhat tries to attack her with its massive katana once the battlesuit transformation is complete, but she simply dodges and runs on it, before making short work of the mech by raining homing lasers on it. Coupled with the upbeat song that is "Reburn", miHoYo couldn't have picked a better way to start advertising the game.
  • "Will of the Herrscher" note :
    • This sequence is essentially Sirin's finest hour, making it a villainous CMoA. Having fully gained control over Kiana's body, Sirin, now fully awakened as the Herrscher of the Void, transforms her battlesuit into an even more alien-looking one and proceeds to summon countless Honkai Beasts in response to Anti-Entropy's army of Titan mechs. While the Honkai are slowly gaining ground, she delivers a gloriously hammy, scathing speech towards humanity:
Herrscher of the Void: Humans, your existence is a mistake. War, cheating, jealousy, greed. You once made me lose everything. But today, I will devour everything. Because I am the Honkai!
    • Sirin's response against Anti-Entropy's artillery barrage? A wry smile and a single flicker from her fingers. The chorus portion of the theme song, "Befall", then wails as every single projectile is intercepted by multiple portals and reflected back at Anti-Entropy's mechs, leaving nothing but a burning wasteland in the ensuing devastation. "Hail my proud queen", indeed.
  • "Final Lesson" note :
    • During Benares' attack on the Hyperion, Himeko easily trounces the wyrm by throwing the turret it chucked on the bridge back at it, before slamming it down with an overhead kick. Thanks to the Vermilion Knight battlesuit, Himeko is more than capable of manhandling Sirin's pet dragon.
    • Before Himeko can finish off Benares, the Herrscher of the Void drags Himeko into a parallel dimension and curbstomps her in there with fairly basic applications the Herrscher's space manipulation, crashing Himeko against a giant cube and dicing it with her spikes. For anyone else, it'd be complete overkill, but Sirin is obviously not messing around this time.
    • Despite the aformentioned curbstomp, Himeko gets back up and nearly nails Sirin with one of her sword fragments; our Vermilion Knight is clearly already on her last legs, but presses on with an understated Pre-Asskicking One-Liner:
Himeko: I guess you're done attacking. It's my turn now... I hope you don't mind, girl.
    • From that point onwards, nothing Sirin throws at Himeko so much as phases her; while delivering a speech that pleas Kiana to snap out of the Herrscher's control, Himeko shrugs off every single attack, from destroying multiple spikes with a single swing of her sword, to breaking out of a freaking black hole by overclocking her battlesuit. In the end, though, all those displays of overpowering the Herrscher diverted Sirin from Himeko's true goal, which was to inject the Honkai-neutralizing serum. Sirin can only scream in anger as she is suppressed, while Himeko passes away, hopeful that Kiana will finish the story the way she wants. For someone whose days were already numbered, Himeko's sacrifice as a mentor and friend is easily one of the story's most emotional moments.
  • "Cyberangel: ZERO Exception" note :
    • Upon accepting the Core of Reason (with a little help from Seele's spirit), Bronya steadily adapts herself to her new battlesuit, skillfully dodging Tlaloc's attacks and turning Project Bunny into a motorcycle (which gets its own awesome Transformation Sequence), which she uses to ride around the massive Honkai Beast in midair and deploy a large number of holographic guns. The sequence is so fluidily animated and long (akin to The Oner), you'd have to wonder just how much time miHoYo spent in making it.
    • Then, Bronya decides to go for broke and ram Tlaloc's head at high speeds, cleanly decapitating the monster. To ensure that it stays dead, our new Herrscher of Reason, frilly robes and all, fully materializes all of the holographic guns and blasts the giant corpse to bits.
  • "Seele" note :
    • In this video, Seele proves to us that in some cases, the rescued becomes the rescuer. After being separated from Bronya in-between dimensions, Seele utterly refuse to give up on her, even calling out her dark self on her cowardice. Through sheer force of will and tears, she breaks through dimensions and dives back into the Eye of the Deep in her newly-revealed Stygian Nymph battlesuit. And when Quantum Beasts start blocking her path, she convinces her other self to lend her power; the combination of Seele and Dark Seele stops time and annihilates every enemy with a single swing from her scythe, all to the violent chorus burst of "Dual Ego". There's a reason Seele claimed to Cocolia that there was no better candidate for the "quantum" experiment than her.
  • "Meteoric Salvation" note :
    • The video starts with a fluidly animated sequence of Kiana showing off her superhuman parkour skills on her way to the center of Arc City. Once World Serpent's mechs start getting in her way, she takes off her jacket, summons a good ol' baseball bat and starts rushing towards her objective, sliding along power wires, nimbly dodging incoming missiles and manhandling some of the obstructing mechs.
    • When Kiana comes face to face with a gatling-touting mech, she's forced to deflect its fire by spinning her bat, before throwing said bat at the gun, disarming the mech and forcing it into a fistfight with her, complete with a smoothly animated rendition of her dimensional "Neko Charm" paw attack. Kiana then starts using some of her Herrscher powers to redirect a punch that would normally spell doom for her. After defeating the mech and skillfully stopping time to avoid its last salvo of missiles (then using them as makeshift stepping stones for good measure), Kiana finally has a clear path to the Honkai bomb.
    • As the energy of the Honkai bomb starts overwhelming Kiana and her body starts breaking down, a familiar hand poses itself atop our heroine's own and whispers "Kiana...". Himeko's ghost comes to the rescue, reminding Kiana of what she fights for as she doubles down on her efforts and sends the bomb flying upwards. This moment is heralded by the lyrics of the new Valkyrie theme, "Starfall".
Kiana: Yeah. I... promised you! I will end this wretched story... [Speaking in unison with Himeko's ghost] the way we've always wanted!
    • As the bomb keeps soaring higher and higher, Kiana flies alongside it to push it as far away from the ground as possible, changing her clothes into those of the recognizable Herrscher of the Void, but with a twist; her eyes are blue, confirming K-423's full reign over Sirin's powers in this pivotal moment. The ascent then continues as the people of Arc City, Rita and Mei all witness it as a purple comet of hope. Kiana then detonates the bomb in low orbit, triggering a beautiful flash of light as "Starfall"'s chorus ends, and along with it Kiana's struggle to come to terms with the responsibilities she's been entrusted with.
Kiana: I have... kept my promise...
  • Chapter XV's CG note
    • In this animation, Durandal and Kevin Kaslana meet face to face and waste no time trading blows as the most powerful warriors of their respective eras. The fight ultimately isn't too serious given neither side uses their iconic Divine Keys, but it's still pretty impressive to see a mock duel cause so much devastation in the frozen wasteland.
  • "Lament of the Fallen" note
    • While the entire video is mostly somber due to being an emotional breakup between two best friends who simply can't reconcile their goals note , it's also a taste of things to come when two fully awakened Herrschers slug it out. Unlike Chapter 8 where Mei was utterly trounced by the Herrscher of the Void no matter how hard the player tried, here she completely dominates Kiana in a fistfight without giving the latter any openings and thoroughly exploiting hers instead. Eventually, Kiana starts tapping into her Void powers, which prompts Mei to swiftly counter with a flurry of lightning-powered attacks that culminate in punching Kiana so hard, she gets sent flying off the school's roof and into the track field below.
    • Not even seconds after Kiana gets floored by the electric punch, multiple Subspace Lances surround Mei and trap her, while Kiana walks back up to the school's roof, this time in her Herrscher form. In spite of all that beatdown, Kiana obviously can't be written off just like that.
    • As Mei tears down Kiana's self-sacrificing nature and goes into her own Herrscher of Thunder mode, a remixed version of her old theme from Guns GirlZ plays, accentuating Mei's dominance in this scene as rain droplets around her stop in mid-air and lightning surges from her body.
Mei: Maybe this for the greater good... [starts breaking free of the Subspace Lances] but how could I pretend this is the right thing? [shatters the Lance pointed at her neck] This world means nothing to me... without you!
    • The very next sequence is a frantic aerial battle between the two Herrschers, with Kiana unsuccessfully trying to pin Mei down with everything she has, from Subspace Lances to countless blocks. Mei, who has become one with lightning at this point, effortlessly outspeeds everything Kiana throws at her, blitzes the Void Queen, then unveils her full Herrscher of Thunder form, before finally unleashing a finishing blow on Kiana with one iai strike from her Ultimate.
  • "Shattered Samsara" note
    • This short animation is the conclusion to the heated duel between Kiana and the Herrscher of Sentience that takes place throughout Ch.22, Act 2. The Herrscher of Sentience's Villainous Breakdown settles in as she cannot comprehend why Kiana and Fu Hua's spirit won't cooperate with her plans and can stand up to her in a duel. Things get intense extremely quickly with the angered Hua(?), so Kiana transforms into her Herrscher of the Void battlesuit with no control issues like she had in previous fights and manages to break even with the Herrscher of Sentience.
    • After finding out that she can't outpace Kiana now that the latter is in Herrscher mode, the Herrscher of Sentience places all bets on a single ultimate attack that's just as spectacular as it is nightmarish. Kiana is overwhelmed with dread, but Fu Hua's spirit reassures her and tells her to concentrate, resulting in the replication of Fu Hua's most powerful attack, the Edge of Taixuan's Eminence. Kiana's move ultimately wins the short Beam-O-War that ensues, engulfing the Herrscher of Sentience in a fiery explosion.
Kiana and Fu Hua's spirit: [Speaking in unison] It is the origin of change, the impetus behind creation, and cannot be restricted by forms.
    • As Fu Hua's spirit dissipates to seal herself alongside the Herrscher of Sentience, Kiana, while holding Fenghuang Down's remaining feather, resolves to no longer accept pyrrhic victories and uses her Void powers to break through dimensions to rescue Fu Hua. Just like the "Meteoric Salvation" animation, it showcases just how much Kiana has grown as a heroine.
Kiana: Enough. Why is it always like this? Trading sacrifices for so-called victories. It's unacceptable. Give Fu Hua back to me!
    • While going through the void in search for Fu Hua, Kiana is forced to relive the latter's painful memories, from Otto's betrayal to the loss of Cheng Lixue. In spite of it all, Kiana powers through and shatters the seal, dragging along Fu Hua while promising to be there for her.
Fu Hua: Kiana! Why are you here? If the seal is broken...
Kiana: Shut it! Then I'll wreck her (the Herrscher of Sentience) good again! Wanna run away from me? Not a chance!
  • "Everlasting Flames" note  is animation at its finest as miHoYo celebrates the seventh year since Guns GirlZ's release (and by extension, the debut of Kiana's definitive character design).
    • The sequence opens up with the Herrscher of Dominance putting Kiana on the ropes, with both Bronya and Fu Hua already knocked unconscious. Even though the Herrscher has Kiana badly beaten up and tries to instill despair on her, the latter refuses to give up and reaches out for Himeko's sword, proudly declaring that her friends made the right choice and delivering an epic Call-Back to her mentor's Pre Ass Kicking One Liner, followed by the inclusion of the new Valkyrie theme, "Moon Halo".
Kiana: Are you done? My turn now. I hope you're fine with that!
    • When the Herrscher of Dominance keeps trying to put Kiana down with nihilistic speeches as the latter cuts through the swathes of dolls, Bronya and Fu Hua successively come to their friend's defense by lending her the power of their respective Herrscher Cores.
Herrscher of Dominance: Why do you keep getting up? No ammount of struggle can change the result.
Bronya: Kiana doesn't care about that, cause she's an idiot! And an idiot doesn't quit!
Fu Hua: She changed me. She changed many ones. From today onwards, she'll continue to change others. I want to live till that day happens, so... [Speaks in unison with Kiana] we're not stopping here!
    • After another nihilistic spiel from the Herrscher of Dominance as it holds Kiana's charge at bay, our heroine refutes its arguments and finally reveals her new Herrscher of Flamescion battlesuit, emerging from the flames with a Badass Cape and raising over her head Himeko's sword, which is now infused with the combined powers of the Gems of Serenity and Haste and the Cores of Reason and Sentience.
Herrscher of Dominance: Your ideals can never be realized. Because this world has always been ugly.
      Kiana: No it's not!
    • As Kiana beautifully dodges the Herrscher's attacks and counters with her own, she makes a speech about the things that make her appreciate this world in spite of everything. And when she blocks her opponent's Wave-Motion Gun, a panning shot of the people who hold her dear (Theresa, Mei, Bronya and Fu Hua) can be seen, as if they're backing her up.
Kiana: It sure isn't all sunshine and rainbows, but there are people who taught me to never give up. They've been guiding me and showing me all the beautiful things in this world. I love them, and I love what they love. We're connected by this sword. It will burn up the darkness to make way for light! This will be... our path back home!
    • Right after nullifying the Wave-Motion Gun with a fiery detonation, Kiana, heralded by the song's final chorus, makes one decisive plunge at the Herrscher of Dominance, who blocks her with multiple layers of energy barriers. It is then that Himeko's ghost appears by Kiana's side, smiling one last time before fading away into the flames, with Kiana smiling back and putting the finishing touch on the attack, engulfing her foe in a massive explosion.
  • "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" note
    • This one is another villainous CMoA, this time for Otto Apocalypse using the Void Archives to fight several copies of him and then a giant Honkai Beast, all this while (based on a short playable section before the scene where the player controls Otto) being almost dead from the fight against Kiana and Durandal.
    • The Honkai Beast eventually manages to stab Otto from behind, and you would think he failed in his mission, but no... thinking of Kallen, he gathers all his strength and breaks the Honkais rods, freeing himself and reaching the Imaginary Tree, whereupon he creates a timeline where Kallen lives at the cost of his own existence. In the end, Otto corrects the mistake that haunted him for so many centuries, even if he won't be around to live with Kallen in the new timeline.
  • "Because of You" note  is the grand finale to the Elysian Realm story arc, pitting Elysia against the Current Era Herrscher of Corruption trying to break free from the Elysian Realm and into the real world. The story director said that this story arc would start and end with Elysia, and this animation is proof of that.
    • Elysia tries to put up a good fight with her usual tease, but it's increasingly clear that the Herrscher of Corruption has the upper hand thanks to its ability to erase data just by merely grazing its target and infecting them from the inside. A closer inspection also reveals that the Herrscher of Corruption executes functions in C++ language to gradually remove Elysia's powers. The Herrscher of Corruption then delivers a scathing Motive Rant while it beats down Elysia and ends up absorbing her:
Herrscher of Corruption: Elysian Realm is just your lie. Memory is nothing more than a phantom of the past, built up by redundant data. Of course you don't care. But I do. I'll escape and survive. I'll grow and propagate, until I fill every corner of the whole wide world. I won't lose to you, and this is not the end. This is my drive. I'll... live forever.
    • When all hope seems lost and Elysia's data is about to be deleted, her data reforms itself out of sheer determination to achieve a satisfying conclusion to the Elysian Realm and fights her way out of the digital limbo with the help of Eden, Mobius, Kalpas, Vill-V and Aponia.
Elysia: Sorry... I'll have to let you down. The ending of the Flame-Chasers must be grand and spectacular. And the two of us only would be a lonely duo. What do you think? Dear Eden.
Eden: You are right, Ellie. Let's start our very last ball.
    • The animation shift in this short is quite noticeable and masterfully done. From the moment Elysia's eye gets infected, the aspect ratio changes from the standard 16:9 standard widescreen to an older 4:3, and when Elysia is stuck in limbo, the character animation style and image quality of the Flame-Chasers purposefully resemble an anime from The '90s. When Elysia breaks out from the Herrscher's grasp, the character designs are upgraded to a 2000s-style anime, and when Elysia exposes the Herrscher of Corruption's true form by shooting down the buildings it's hiding under, the aspect ratio turns back to 16:9 and the artstyle goes back to the 3D CGI Honkai Impact 3rd animations are known for.
    • As the chorus of the new original song "TruE" blares and the Herrscher of Corruption's true form is laid bare, Elysia transforms into her ultimate battlesuit; the Herrscher of Human: Ego. Blessed by every signet of the Thirteen Flame-Chasers, Elysia repels all of the Herrscher of Corruption's attacks and cancels its attempt to rewind time, before firing a final, self-sacrificial arrow that annihilates the threat and the Elysian Realm altogether, making good on her promise for a grand finale. She also a delivers a poignant monologue that acknowledges her doom and urges anyone stumbling upon the Flame-Chasers' memories to go beyond their failures.
Elysia: Look, they [the 13 Flame Chasers] lived with pride and sung a beautiful ode to civilization with their lives. This is the story of the people called Flame-Chasers. It's about the unfinished journey of the thirteen. However, visitor, your road ahead never ends, right? Then follow your heart and move forward. We agreed to move forward! Walk along the footprints to witness the flame-chasing crusade. In the end, you will go beyond the graves and create a future we could not reach!

    In-story moments
  • Chapter 13:
    • It opens with the narration of how Kiana has become the unknown, unsung hero of Arc City, following the events of ch. 11-EX. She has battled many Honkai threats to the city singlehandedly, with her only help being Fu Hua's guidance in her mind. Not only that, she also uncovers a hidden scheme that can potentially threaten the whole city, using careful and patient planning. This helps her reach out to Rita so she, as a high-ranking Schicksal representative, can see it for herself. Rita would later report the whole thing to her boss, Durandal.
    • Following Kiana's intel, Rita stealthily infiltrates the Heliopolis building, trying to find their secrets. It goes so smoothly that she manages to go very deep into their labs and find out that Heliopolis is affiliated with World Serpent, as well as their plan, Project Stigma: to forcefully trigger "stigma genome rearrangement" onto the whole people of Arc City, which can potentially do more harm than good. However, Raven of Heliopolis has already known this is going to happen and proceeds to ambush Rita with a bunch of zombies and, later, an anti-Honkai serum gas. As Rita gets weakened and slumps down, Raven also tells her that her Valkyrie squad also got ambushed and hit by the same gas. Rita's reaction? She simply gives a wry smile and says that she's thinking of how Schicksal is going to "repay" the favor.
    • Kiana decides to infiltrate the Heliopolis building after Rita to check on her, only to find her Valkyrie squad on their last legs. Kiana protects them from incoming zombies, then goes after Rita to rescue her. The two then cut their way out of the building, facing many enemies along the way. Once they're outside, Rita tries to call her personal airship, EOS, to get away from the building, only to hear gunshots over the comm links; she immediately understands that it's not going to save her. Instead, she commands the ship itself to crash to the ground to destroy a part of the building and the enemies surrounding them. If not for Kiana using her Herrscher powers in time to teleport herself and Rita to safety, they would've died too. Kiana calls Rita out on such audacity, to which she replies that it's only part of her job.
  • Chapter 22: Act 2 is entirely dedicated to a duel between Kiana and the Herrscher of Sentience, making careful use of fluid combat sequences and QTE sections. The second phase of the fight has Kiana run along a really long chain while the Herrscher launches wave after wave of energy swords, which Kiana can either dodge or deflect by swinging her Subspace Lances. Despite the Herrscher putting her down with several scathing speeches, Kiana still perserveres through the fight and manages to fight her to a standstill, which enrages the Herrscher and leads to the "Shattered Samsara" short animation.
  • Chapter 28
    • In Act 3, Otto tricks Kiana and Durandal into completing his goal that he's been working on for centuries: the revival of Kallen. After all his failures, what did it finally take to accomplish this? Creating a world where Kallen didn't die, at the cost of himself. Magnificent Bastard, indeed.
      • What it finally took to make that world is truly insane. Having concluded that while an intact soul can attain a body, there's no way to put a soul that has already dispersed back together, Otto looked to the Imaginary Tree for inspiration, and discovered a way to create a branch in the timeline. But actually joining with the Imaginary Tree for its godlike power would turn him into its slave, leaving him unable to accomplish his goal himself. But if someone with time-space powers used "re-normalization" to invert his relationship with the Tree, he'd have an instant where he is both almighty and yet retains free will, allowing the other person to drive his will and power into the Tree like a nail and hammer it home. Simple and foolproof...except that in his attempts to pursue the dead-end plan of using the Gem of Serenity, he'd made a mortal enemy out of Kiana, the only person with the necessary powers. While there's no way in hell Kiana would ever cooperate with him willingly, that turns out to not be much of a problem. As all he needs is for her to use re-normalization with all her might to kill him, he decides instead to go all out in making himself an enemy of the world, pulling out all the stops solely for the moment when she strikes him down. With his goal accomplished, he congratulations Durandal and Kiana before gracefully bowing out to put on the finishing touch of actually saving Kallen's life in his new timeline before finally perishing for good. You don't get more magnificent than getting what you want by giving everyone else exactly what they want.
  • Chapter 35 - This is the send-off to Part 1 of the main story, which had been going on for five years. There's bound to be awesome moments.
    • The final bossfight against Kevin is already awesome, but special mention goes to the transition between phases 2 and 3 - Kevin raises a hitshield with so many points that it is impossible to break, with Bronya trying to figure out a way to create enough Selene cannons to break through - but then Ai chimes in, stating they don't have to - everyone else is there fighting alongside them.. Now, during the battle, there was a special active skill that let you fire the Selene at Kevin, with a special artillery shell icons appearing on the left side of the screen. When Ai chimes in, you start seeing those shells appear with the names of characters, major and minor, and when that list is exhausted, the game starts displaying the usernames of actual players, with the list eventually going so fast that it's impossible to read, until finally, the hitshield drops within a matter of seconds.

  • Post-Honkai Odyssey
    • The climax of "Part 1" has your team going onto the Supervillain Lair to confront whoever it is that caused the city's devastation. The baddie, Void Archives, claims that he's going to have them be delivered "directly" to him; so you go straight to his position without any enemies ambushing you. Once you're there, he congratulates them for getting there and thanks them for allowing him to meet Welt (whom you've tried to evacuate out of the city before). He then treats your team to the biggest, baddest of the strange enemies in the city: Code XXI - World, which becomes the boss. It has a lot of gimmicks and tricky attacks, including ones you've never seen before.
    • After you defeat said boss, Mei goes to confront Void Archives directly... only for him to quickly subdue her with Judah-like chains, and then he commands The World to absorb her Herrscher energy. The "protagonist" tries desperately to break the barrier that covers The World, to no avail; this scene is playable too, with you having to tap multiple times to wake him up after the barrier knocks him away. Then it cuts to a flashback where Mei notes that his sword can store and channel Honkai energy for him, but overclocking it would harm his body, and tells him to promise her to not push himself too hard. It cuts to him saying that he's going to break that promise so everyone can walk out of this together. It then goes to a series of Press X to Not Die where he goes to charge Honkai energy through his sword - a lot of it, that the sword's system voice says that it's potentially harming his body - and then does a supercharged slash that breaks the barrier. You, as him, now fight The World again, but now his health and SP rapidly regenerates and his attacks become a lot stronger. The fight turns into an epic No-Holds-Barred Beatdown and the mode's song, "Oaths", plays in its full glory. After that, The World is completely destroyed, at the cost of Honkai corruption seemingly spreading through his body.
