Jane, after making some sultry pickup lines, says she's in a rush, acting as though she already has the job she's interviewing for. She gives John her card and he promises to call her tonight, but she offers to let him call any time, repeating this to give a Freudian Slip about how he can call her "anything" before correcting herself.

After Jane passionately kisses John and leaves him there, he ponders how great her smile and her body are, and declares her a a 15, a 20, or a 1,000. He exults over having her number, but realizes that she gave it to him, and considers her a "slut" for giving it to him without knowing whether or not he's someone like "an axe murderer." Going off that, he declares that she uses men for her purposes, is Afraid Of Commitment, and doesn't care if he gets an orgasm. All this is a Unfortunate Implications laden Double Standard against females pursuing males.

Suddenly, John comes to a simple realization- the area code isn't listed and there's at least a dozen in the area. He briefly considers calling all twelve numbers (thereby likely getting at least eleven people who don't want him to call them), but then his paranoia returns, and he realizes that Jane gave him her number so easily because it was fake. He desperately wants to track her down, and considers putting a note on her windshield, but suggests that "a beauty like that gets hit on all the time." He's desperate for her to call, and places that above getting to work, and considers playing with her rear view mirror until she returns.

The scene shifts to the office. The boss, Thresher (it's actually nice to see a somewhat unusual name that isn't overly exotic), is pleased with Jane's qualifications and references, but says her position was canceled an hour ago.

Jane is beside herself and pleads with Thresher, saying she loves LA in spite of all the various problems like trash, crime and homeless people. I've been where she is, but she's only succeeding in making herself sound desperate. Thresher, in an apparent display of sympathy, asks her to call him Mark, but says, in response to Jane finding this the most humiliating experience of her life, she'll have lots of humiliating experiences in the future (in the job search, one has to get used to rejection). Jane continues pleading with him for a chance to start at a job, however humble, and work her way up. She admits that she doesn't have a lot of money and was counting on this job.

So what now? Somewhat unusually for a visual novel, instead of choosing characters' actions, you choose the outcome of this scene.

For "Thresher finds a job for Jane after all", go to Installment 9
For "Turn poor Jane away", go to Installment 10
For "The hairball takes advantage of the situation" go to Installment 11 (Note: you must be 18 or older to view this, according to the game)
