* ScheduleSlippage: There have been at least two extended periods (one from April to July 2015, and one from September 2015 to January 2016) where Randall has not updated the blog with little explanation, although evidence suggests that both periods are/were connected to book releases (one of which was the What If compilation).

* NightmareFuel: "Cat and Mouse" (vol2 #87) was about Jubilee being left to fight an AxCrazy Sabertooth after he kills both Bishop and Beast. As the story progressed Sabertooth received more and more physical damage, verging on BodyHorror, as Jubilee is left to fend for herself in a version of the Xavier Institute which verges on Creator/HRGiger levels of nightmarish design. The issue was voted one of Comic Book Resources' "Scariest Comic Books Of All Time". ** HarsherInHindsight/ FunnyAneurysmMoment: "What if Spiderman Had Not Married Mary Jane" became more like a canon after the release of [[http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ComicBook/OneMoreDay?from=Main.OneMoreDay "One More Day"]] in 2007.

* HilariousInHindsight: Plenty of scenarios in the comic actually happened as time went on - Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four in the Hickman run, Hulk became a barbarian in the ''PlanetHulk'' series, ComicBookTime means that Captain America was probably revived decades after "What if Cap were revived today?", Elektra's survival has been retconned in...
** The joke scenario in #34, "What if Every Avenger Remained an Avenger", depicts the silliness of an Avengers team with dozens of members. Ever since ''ComicBook/CivilWar'', that lineup has looked downright sparse.

* HeartwarmingMoments: Some of the conclusions are actually quite sweet, like [[http://what-if.xkcd.com/34/ this one]].
--> 140 characters may not be a lot, but we will ''never'' run out of things to say.
** And this one, for inspirational science value:
--> I've never seen the Icarus story as a lesson about the limitations of humans. I see it as a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive.
** [[http://what-if.xkcd.com/94 Billion-Story Building]] is written to try and explain to a 4.5 year old the problems of the titular building.
*** And despite the fact that the author is describing how a billion-story building is impossible, he ends by saying that it's very similar to the concept of a space elevator, and basically shows her that science could make her dream a reality:
--> We can't build one yet because there are some problems we don't know how to solve, like how to make the tower strong enough and send power up it to run the elevators. If you really want to build a gigantic tower, you can find out about some of the problems they're working on, and eventually become one of the people coming up with ideas to solve them. Maybe, someday, you ''could'' build a giant tower to space.
