YMMV / What If...? Miles Morales

Go To

  • Ethnic Scrappy: The fourth issue, with Miles as Thor, is a rare case where not only the characters, but the comic itself falls into this trope to the point of widespread controversy. Its depiction of Asgard as a Brooklyn-esque city rife with imagery evocative of a run-down neighborhood as graffiti and shoes hanging off of telephone wires, coupled with the fact that the issue is narrated in rap, proved highly unflattering to many a reader. The Miles/Thor mashup featured in the issue was particularly hated for being depicted as a walking caricature of a stereotypical black man, to the point that he feels like an In Name Only version of the hero whom many likened to a character featured in Blaxploitation media.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: As of July 2022, the series is largely overshadowed by the reaction to issue #4, which featured Miles as Thor, and the stereotypes it used. There's graffiti on Mjolnir, shoes hang from telephone wires above the streets of Asgard and Thor swears "by Odin's fade" and calls Asgard “his hood”. It was also the only story in the series not written by a Black writer, something which many critics highlighted. The portrayal attracted press coverage, as did some of writer Yehudi Mercado's responses to his critics. Mercado's subsequent apology, accompanied by an announcement that he would be donating his fee to charity, generated another round of news stories.
