* InternetBackdraft: The third film's cancellation was met with huge backlash from fans and the media, citing it as a major DisproportionateRetribution against the failure of Tomorrowland and causing the latter franchise to have a large hatedom in retaliation. Petitions for it to be put back into development reached over 30,000 signatures in a week, and every post from the official Facebook page is often flooded with posts from angry fans asking for a third film.
** TRON [=RUN/R=] was also met with backlash, both because ItsShortSoItSucks and because it was developed by Sanzaru Games, which is already controversial for VideoGame/SlyCooperThievesInTimethe game is infamous for a major DownerEnding Cliffhanger, which Sanzaru will not resolve with a sequel, leading to major FanonDiscontinuity, given the franchise already had a happy ending with the third game. This united fans of both franchises to call out on the lack of sequels.
** The "reboot" idea has met with heavy skepticism on Website/Tumblr's Tron fandom, both due to Koskinski's involvement His original ideas were to center the third film on the "real" world, deal with an invasion of hostile AI trying to wipe out humans, and be DarkerAndEdgier than Legacy, which was already plenty dark and paranoid about technology like his film Film/Oblivion2013. Elements of the fanbase, particularly those who liked Lisberger's vision of AI being no better or worse than humans, were not impressed. and the potential casting of Jared Leto. Some are just put off with Disney remaking another movie given the amount of live-action remakes that were released in the 2010sas of March 2017, seventeen remakes are in development.

* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: It isn't bad but it is a film StarringSpecialEffects with less of a story and acting emphasis. However, Creator/OliviaWilde gives a rather touching SkilledButNaive portrayal of her character Quorra, who could have easily ended up just another SatelliteLoveInterest. Additionally, Creator/JeffBridges puts quite a lot of work into making CLU a menacing and interesting villain since the script doesn't give him much help, and he's believably weary but likable as Kevin Flynn. Finally, Bruce Boxleitner doesn't get to replay Alan for long, but he does quite a good job in his brief scenes.

** The younger faces for Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner were both realistic-looking and moderately ConspicuousCGI. In Clu's case, this was evidently deliberate. The main problem arises because the digital younger faces use motion capture from the real actors' current faces... and neither Jeff Bridges nor Bruce Boxleitner's faces are shaped like that anymore. It's especially obvious when Clu will speak and his mouth will almost move beyond his thin cheeks.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Every "pure" AI character wants to kill the heroes in a painful and messy fashion. ExpandedUniverse material points to plenty of self-serving spin in Flynn's official story. 2/3 of the named characters are dead or de-rezzed, most of the other third have dim survival odds, probably wish they were dead, or both. The Grid is a WretchedHive. It's arguable that OnlyTheLeadsGetAHappyEnding, but even that is under debate as Sam trudges off to a corporate job where it's clear that everyone sees him as a proxy for his father and Quorra has no analog world skills or identity. This lead to a backlash on Tumblr when Kosinski said that the planned sequel would go even more DarkerAndEdgier.
