You're still learning everything, the game chucks a bunch of high defense or high-dodge enemies you can't kill by melee attacking at you, Robotnik only helps one team at once, etc. But once you reach the Twilight Cage, the game gets much ''much'' better.

* LoveItOrHateIt - To even greater extremes than other previous Sonic titles, some consider it a revival of Sonic's 'golden age' with improved story and character development and gripping gameplay, others consider it a broken mess with shallow characterization and cheap fan service. The very strong division in opinions only makes both sides of the argument more stubborn about it.

** It's also ironic because the critics actually had some good things to say about this game, given that they normally tend to trash Sonic games for [[UnpleasableFanbase not being like the Genesis games, or for being too much like the genesis games,]] if [[BiasSteamroller not trashing it for being Sonic and saying that's the reason it sucks]].

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap - Big, done by taking his stupidity and making it ''funny'' stupidity rather than plain ol' retarded stupidity. Also Amy Rose, who was dialed back from StalkerWithACrush to just a ClingyJealousGirl.
** YourMileageMayVary, half the fanbase seems to consider it a valid example of the tropes, others consider it even worse CharacterDerailment than the previous titles (others will question whether [[BaseBreaker said characters]] needed 'rescuing' to begin with).
** Cream is also much less annoying.

* ScrappyMechanic - how you execute the POW moves. Sometimes it's OK, sometimes it's bad and sometimes it's ''horribly unfair''. Doesn't help on how nice some of the POW moves' effects can be - because if you mess up even a ''little'' bit, oops, you just wasted a turn and a nice ton of PP! It certainly doesn't help that this is the ONLY way you can counter enemy's attacks and execute your own. And what if you don't have a stylus or a very good touch screen?
