One part of the flashback has them introducing the crowd to the Smugleys for...absolutely ''no reason whatsoever'' (other than being a ham-handed way of introducing the characters to the show). It wasn't even merely included within the flashback for the sake of writing convenience; the scene actually cuts back to reality from the flashback to have one of the boys explain to the crowd who these two completely irrelevant people (who don't appear for the rest of the episode) are.
