''Alternate Life'' are spin-off seasons that allow you to see what UL would've been like with one of the removed HSL love interests. * AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: There are several relationships that appeared strained but are actually better than Candy first imagines. Rosalya and Leigh, Nathanial and Amber, and Castiel and his parents, for example, all seem to be contentous, but it becomes clear that they all have a genuine love and respect for one another. Subverted, however, with Yeleen and her mother; it really is as antagonistic as it first appears to be.

For the sake of simplicity, the player character is going to be referred to as "Candy/your Candy/our Candy" and with third person pronouns.

* GeekyTurnOn: Candys who date Armin will find his references to video games and pop culture endearing.
* GirlPosse: Amber has one in Li and Charlotte. They're both just as petty as her and are often seen together with Amber. As the story goes on, Candy can interact with Charlotte and Li on their own (the latter less than the former).

%% CanonDiscontinuity: Played for laughs. Kentin is doing his absolute best to forget that he kissed Amber once. And he's doing his best to make sure that YOU forget it too.
* ChekhovsGun: For most of the game, finding Lysander's notebook was treated as a simple, throwaway mission. In Episode 32, the notebook became a key fact in [[spoiler:Lysander regaining his memories]].
* DeathGlare: When discussing whether or not they should save the rabbits, Castiel bluntly says that rabbits die all the time anyway. This earns him a harsh glare from most, if not all, of his classmates.
* DoggedNiceGuy: During the first couple episodes, it was clear that Kentin had a ''huge'' crush on Candy. He often inserted himself into situations where he wasn't really needed. Candy (especially in the illustrations) didn't seem to be happy with his overenthusiastic affection. When he came back from military camp, it's still obvious that Kentin was crushing on Candy, but his clingy behavior was toned down quite a bit. And if Candy ended up with one of the other boys, Kentin accepted her choice.
* EasilyForgiven: Candy accepts the apologies of those that had turned on her. The only person who Candy doesn't easily forgive is Castiel; she ignores his attempts a few times until Castiel forces her to listen to what he has to say.
* EnemyMine: Defied. Candy asks Amber if she'd be willing to help her take down Deborah, but Amber refuses.
* FreudianSlip: Once Kentin comes back, he tries very hard to keep his crush on Candy under wraps. However, if his L'o'M is high enough, he'll slip up often. Subverted with Castiel: anytime it sounds like he slipped up, he makes it very clear that whatever compliment he just gave Candy was said on purpose to make her blush.

* KickTheDog: In Episode 5, Amber stole some exam answers with the intend to distribute them to the rest of the students. Nataniel was in charge of looking after those papers, and was going to be in deep trouble if Candy hadn't figured out that Amber took them. She was fully willing to let her brother talk the fall for her actions.
* KnightOfCerebus: While Deborah's arc wasn't exactly the happiest, the introduction of Francis and his [[spoiler:abuse of Nathaniel]] is where the game starts to include more mature themes and topics.
* LapPillow: If you choose Castiel as your orientation partner in Episode 11, Castiel will rest his head on Candy's lap, something that's reflected in his illustration.
* LittleBitBeastly: Charlie, Willi, and Wenka (the characters introduced in the Easter 2012 episode) all have rabbit ears.
* LockedUpAndLeftBehind: When the auditions for the lead role in the play are about to start, Amber tricks Candy into the school's basement before locking the door and leaving.
* LoveTriangle: After Candy enters a relationship with the love interest of your choosing, a small love triangle develops between her new boyfriend and the boy who's L'o'M is the second highest.
* MisterMuffykins: Principal Shermansky's owns a corgi named Kiki. During Episode 3, Shermansky basically orders Candy to find her dog. It wasn't unheard of for players to spend hundreds of AP trying and failing to find Kiki.
* MoodWhiplash:
** In Episode 23, Candy overhears [[spoiler: Nathaniel being abused by his father]]. After taking a moment to digest this, she goes to check on Nathaniel in his room and immediately gets distracted by the fact that he's only wearing boxers. Right after this line, the tone gets serious again.
** In Episode 30, Candy has finally started a relationship with the boy she's been crushing on, Dakota finally understands that she's not interested in him, and Candy's team has even won the prize in the art exposition. [[spoiler: Then Lysander is ran over by a car.]]
** At the end of Episode 35, Candy and her boyfriend stand up to [[spoiler:Charlotte]] and intimidate her into deleting her photos of Iris. Overcome with passion, Candy kisses him. Afterword, she steps outside, only to find a crowd surrounding Armin [[spoiler: watching on as he's being arrested]].
* MostWritersAreAdults: Some of the language used in the early episodes is pretty stilted and formal for teenagers (even if you account for LostInTranslation). Later episodes improve on this somewhat by having the characters pepper their speach with slang.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Armin half-jokingly suggests this as a way to take care of Deborah, adding that they could MakeItLookLikeAnAccident. Deborah's lucky no one wanted to go to jail.
* NerdGlasses: Kentin originally wore a pair of glasses that look like this. Later on, he trades them in for contacts .
* NoDressCode: Some of the things the character's wear might get them in trouble if they went to a stricter school (Kim's revealing tank top being one example). Justified, since the game is set in France, where many schools don't have dress codes.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: In Episode 16, trying to tell everyone about Deborah's true nature will only make a majority of them hate Candy's guts.

* NotWhatItLooksLike: If you're on Castiel's route in Episode 18, one of the rabbits Candy's trying to rescue gets under her shirt. She takes it off in order to better get at it and Castiel ends up holding the shirt. Just then, Mr. Faraize walks in, mumbles that he didn't see anything, then leaves.
* OddFriendship: At first glance, it seems strange that the hot-headed Castiel is best friends with the even-tempered Lysander. However, there is at least one thing they're both very passionate about: music. Lysander even writes lyrics for Castiel to sing.
* OldFlameFizzle: When Kentin comes back from military camp, his affinity drops significantly, regardless of how you treated him before he left. However, since he's still a love interest, you can raise his affinity once again.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Immediately after returning to Sweet Amoris, Kentin kisses Amber, breaks her phone and calls her ugly as revenge for bullying him.
* PetTheDog: Every so often, Amber will do something genuinely nice or even compliment Candy. In Episode 17, she admits that Candy did a good thing when she took down Deborah. The next episode, she wants to help Candy remove the rabbits from the school's science lab.

* PutOnABus: At the beginning of Episode 3, Kentin tells Candy that his father is sending him to a military camp. He doesn't appear again until ten episodes later.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: During Episode 30, Nathaniel will deliver one to Amber if you're on his route.
* RefugeInAudacity: Some of what Castiel says or does definitely falls into this: he comments on Candy's bust size in front of her parents, neither of whom snap at him for it (not even Candy's father). During one Valentine's day event, he gives Candy a pushup bra as a gift, and in another he gives her fuzzy handcuffs.
* RelationshipUpgrade: Episode 28 ends with Candy and your boy of choice sharing a kiss, officially kicking off their new relationship.
* {{Revenge}}: Once it's clear that something needs to be done about Deborah, Candy and a few others in the know make a plan to reveal Deborah for who she really is. Not only does she lose the respect and admiration of everyone in the high school, she also loses the one thing that inspired this whole mess: her singing contract.
* SchoolNewspaperNewsHound: Peggy is nothing if not dedicated to her job. She loves to search for the next story, but isn't shy about collecting or printing gossip and rumors.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: In Episode 6, you're supposed help Rosalya find a ring that Leigh gave her. You can find the ring or you can buy a replacement for 85G.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Despite all the evidence, Amber refuses to believe that her brother is being abused by their father. It isn't until Candy takes action against him that Amber begins to accept what's been happening.
* ShipTease: Upon meeting each other, Lucy and Armin share some moments that could definitely be interpreted as romantic. A few episodes later, Armin brings her up again and hopes that she'll be at the play, and is the only one of the love interests to do so. However, since Armin is still a datable character and Lucy is a huge flirt in general, it's easy to guess that this relationship will remain platonic.
* ShoutOut: In Episode 32, when Priya asks your Candy what she should draw, your Candy's first answer is "[[Literature/TheLittlePrince Draw me a sheep]]."
* SlumberParty: Episode 7's plot involves helping Melody organize a slumber party for her birthday, then attending said party. Each character that is attending gets pajama outfits. It doesn't take long for the conversation to turn to boys.
* SmokingIsNotCool: Castiel smokes, but his habit is never really shown in a positive light.
* StalkerWithACrush:
** Before he was sent to military camp, Kentin definitely had a fixation for Candy. It's heavily hinted that the reason he had a crush on Candy is because she stood up for him against bullies, back at their old school. However, when Candy transferred to Sweet Amoris, Kentin followed her, specifically so he could be with her. He'll also appear randomly to offer you cookies. After returning from the camp, this aspect of his character is considerably toned down. Even if he still likes you he doesn't follow you around as much.
** Nina follows Lysander around and always shows up to his concerts. She is also an active member and president of the Lysander fanclub (of which she and/or your Candy are the only member(s)). If Lysander likes you, then Nina certainly doesn't.
* StarbucksSkinScale: The names for each of the skin tone you can buy from the Clothes Store are named after different types of food.
* StatusQuoIsGod:
** After everything they've been through and after helping each other out on some pretty major occasions, Nathaniel and Castiel still refuse to be friends. Candy even jokes that there Sweet Amoris isn't Sweet Amoris without Castiel and Nathaniel fighting.
** Even after all her character development and two arcs revolving around her experiencing the consequences of spreading rumors, Peggy still thinks it's appropriate to [[spoiler: tell everyone Melody and Mr. Faraize are having an affair]]. Candy tears into her for being so inconsiderate and going back to her old ways.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Nathaniel is Sweet Amoris' resident student council president.
* SweetTooth: Kentin has a thing for sweets, especially cookies.
* SymbolSwearing: Some characters do swear sometimes, but the swears are replaced with special characters.
* TeenDrama: As the name implies, ''High School Life'' centers around teenagers and the day-to-day drama they often find themselves in.
* TeensAreMonsters: Kentin's classmates at military school can only be described as such: [[spoiler: they bullied him severely, locked him outside during a snowstorm, forced him to sleep in a dumpster, and forced him to drink toilet water]]. And that's just what he tells you about. The only person who was nice to him was Evan, who is 10 years older.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Castiel and Nathaniel can't stand even looking at one another. They manage to set aside their animosity (sort of) while practicing for the in-school concert.
* TheFashionista: Rosalya and Alexy are both very passionate about clothes and fashion. Leigh, the owner of Clothes Store, is another example.
* TheirFirstTime: [[spoiler: In Episode 40, your Candy and her beau can have their first times together. The one exception to this is Castiel, who already had his first with Deborah.]]
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Kim and Iris are the tomboys to Rosalya and Melody's girly girls. Violette and Priya are somewhere in the middle.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Kentin, to varying degrees. Part of it depends on how you treated him before he left, part of it is due to the toxic attiudes he picked up during his time at military camp.
* TrappedInAnotherWorld: The Easter and Halloween 2011/2012 special episodes start off with Candy getting transported to a completely different word. In order to return home, she has to complete the assignments given to her.
* UnmovingPlaid: The date outfit for Episode 16 includes Candy wearing a purple plaid top. The pattern remains consistent even within the folds of cloth. It's especially evident in the episode illustrations.

** Episode 12: Up to this point, the game hasn't ever dealt with heavy topics, or hinted that it might include them. Then Candy sees that Nathenial has several bruises on his back...

* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Several characters have this as part of their design: Nathaniel (yellow), Jade (green), Hyun/Leigh/Li (black), Charlotte (brown), etc. Depending on how you customize Candy, she can also have this as part of her appearence.
* DefrostingIceKing: Both Castiel and Lysander's routes involve this trope. Castiel is easy to anger and snarky to the point of being inncentive. Get close to him, though, and he'll slowly become more open and honest, especially with Candy. Lysander is a bit aloof and cool and first, but he has a genuine heart to him that Candy can bring out.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: The original sprites look very different from the several updates they would receive: Nathaniel didn't have the blue color scheme that he does now, Armin had a scarf and vest instead of a beanie and black-and-white shirt, etc. Of the original dates, Castiel's the only one that's had a more consistent design sensibilty.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The Morale system. Candy's Morale would start at 100% and if it ever got to 0%, she would be unable to go out for a day. Interacting with Amber usually lowered it by 5% while interacting with Iris usually raised it by that same amount. The mechanic was in use for the first few episodes, but was never utlized afterward. The 2017 update removed its presence entirely; the only times you'll hear about it is through interactions with older fans.
* FairyGodmother: Agatha is Candy's eccentric aunt, who often referres to herself as Candy's fairy godmother. You have a chance to find her during each episode. If you run into her, she'll give you clothing, action points, or gold.

* GrowingWithTheAudience: The game was originally just focused on teens with some plots that were standard (such as studying for a test), silly (catching the Principal's dog), or both (figuring out who stoll exam answers). As the game progressed and the target audience got older, more mature themes were introduced (such as abuse and cyberbullying). The game was then split into seasons, with the second focusing on Candy's last year in university and the third showing her as a working adult.
* GuideDangIt: The necessity of all the online guides cannot be overstated. In order to unlock most illustrations, you need to choose the correct dialogue and one outfit out of two or more. Towards the begining, you might not have that much trouble discerning the right choices from the wrong, but as the game progresses it gets more and more difficult. And if you miss an illustration, you'll have to spend even more AP on replays. This can have a cascading affect if you particpate in the special events: spend more AP on episodes and you may not be able to obtain everything from an event.

* MonochromeCasting: When the game first launched, a vast majority of the cast was white (except for [[TokenBlackFriend Kim]] and Dakota), including the five love interests and Candy. As more episodes were released, characters of different ethnicities were eventually introduced. To celebrate the fourth anniversary, twelve different skin tones were added, but they had be purchased with Gold and any illustration Candy appeared in would always show her as white. ''University Life'' and ''Love Life'' would later advert this: five skin tones are available from the start and the illustrations will reflect whichever one the player picked for their Candy. There are just as many characters with brown skin as there are with white from the beginning and each one has their own distinct personality.

* AlphaBitch: In HSL, Amber, who bullied Candy from the very first introduction for seemingly no reason, and Castiel's ex Deborah. Deborah's manipulative nature and intentions are actually what kick off the first true arc of the game.
** In UL, Yeleen is a pseudo one for how she treats Chani and Candy. But unlike Amber, around episode 6 and beyond, Candy has the chance to actually improve things between them and they can become friends.
* AnimalEaredHeadband: There are cat ears sold in the HSL clothing shop.
** The Easter episodes for HSL and UL gift you with bunny suits [[PlayboyBunny (not that kind!)]]and animated bunny ears (HSL). And in the 2011 Christmas event (HSL) and a Halloween event (UL), you can get cat outfits.
** Episode 18 of HSL gets you a pair of bunny ears if you run into Candy's aunt.
* {{Animesque}}: The artstyle envokes the look of the anime/manga aesthetic, mainly the exagertated facial features.
* AntiPoopSocking: The whole action point system and how it works. Unless you spend money, it will take months of saving up to actually complete an episode in one run. And that's not including the various events where spending AP is optional, but allows you to finish them quicker (or finish them period in cases where the player missed or failed a mission).
* ArtEvolution. Evident upon comparing the earliest illustrations and character designs to the current ones. In general, proportions became more realistic, and the line work and coloring more detailed.

* BeachEpisode: Episode 9 in HSL and episode 7 in UL. UL also had a summer event that took place on the beach.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Despite being the younger twin, Nathaniel tries really hard with this trope concerning Amber. In the beginning of HSL, he would defend her actions no matter what, even when innocent people were hurt by them. But in later episodes he would actually argue with her when she was being notably selfish and mean. In UL, they lean on each other a bit more and don't fight as often, but he still doesn't 100% agree with ALL of her actions. The one consistent part of this trope however, is whenever Nathaniel finds himself in danger of any sort, he does his best to hide it from Amber to keep her from worrying.
* BigDamnHeroes: In episode 5 when Amber comes up to slap Candy she can be stopped by Castiel, Nathaniel, or Lysander before she even lands a blow. Happens later on when Debrah tries it too but is stopped by Castiel.
** UL plays this straight in the first episode where Nathaniel reintroduces himself by scaring away from street goons that were going to do something '''horrible''' to Candy. But it subverts it later on when [[spoiler: Candy finds out that Nathaniel is associated with one of them and she gets VERY angry because she has no idea why he would hang around a predator like that.]]
* TheBigDamnKiss: [[spoiler: We ''finally'' get to kiss the HSL boys in episode 28. And UL beats HSL by having it in episode ''10''.]]

Yeleen is a milder version, because since she's genuinely nice to anyone who is not Candy or Chani (in the beginning), she also acts more decently towards Candy when Candy's friends are around (which means Candy comes across as the aggressor in some spats).
* BreakTheCutie: In HSL, starting with episode 16, there becomes this trend where the heart of every HSL arc is to destroy Candy's morale in the harshest way possible before a happy ending can be reached.
** UL doesn't do much better. While there aren't any contained 'arcs' per se, there are events that last several episodes that clearly take a toll on Candy's mental well being. If it weren't for the support of her loved ones, who knows how she would even graduate!
** Iris gets it bad in an arc centered around her and Rosalya and Melody both have some heartache in HSL AND UL.
* TheCasanova: Dakota (Dake) has 'flirting with pretty girls' as one of his hobbies. He obviously prefers the player but episode 19 shows that he's no slouch is getting other women to fall in love with him.
** By the time UL starts, both Castiel and Nathaniel have realized their potential as chick magnets and are implied to have several flings before Candy comes back into their lives. And part of the drama of pursing Castiel is his numerous female fans and his ambiguous feelings towards them.
* CooldownHug: One of the guys (except Castiel) gives our candy a hug when she breaks down into tears at the end of episode 16. They hold her until she stops crying and feels better.
** Hyun does this a few times on his route as well.
* ClingyJealousGirl: For both HSL and UL, ALL female love rivals are this way at points. Special mention goes to Nina for Lysander(HSL ONLY), Yeleen if you pursue Castiel, Amber also for Castiel (HSL ONLY. And she notably was a platontically clingy towards Nathaniel and hated you MORE if you pursued him), and Clemance for Hyun (which came with disturbing implications as Hyun was notably very uncomfortable with his much older BOSS giving him special treatment to win him over). Melody also deserves a special mention if only because A) her clinginess reached level extra and B) she's clingy towards TWO love interests (Nathaniel and Rayan). Needless to say, all of this clinginess was in vain as ALL of the guys only have eyes for Candy.
** Candy herself can get a little clingy with the guy she's going after.
** May a higher power (or a handy classmate) help the girl who dares to flirt with Leigh in front of Rosalya.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Castiel is the classic one. Nathaniel is as well [[spoiler: and notably more violent about it]]. Lysander is more of a Clingy Jealous Guy then crazy. The face Kentin makes in episode 32 if he starts to figure out you're with Castiel frighteningly hints toward this trope.
** With UL, there aren't many instances where the love interests can get jealous [[spoiler: since the actual dating starts as early as episode 12]], but there is one very strong instance. [[spoiler: In episode 11 Castiel proposes a one night stand with Candy. Whether Candy accepts or not, unless Castiel is the one she ends up with, ALL of the other love interests will be very cross with Castiel for the rest of UL (so far)]].
* CringeComedy: In episode 37, there's a sex ed seminar. The cringe mostly comes from two things: it's being taught by the long-suffering [[SternTeacher Ms. Delanay]] and there's a condom demonstration with a banana.

** In episode 23, your candy remarks to herself that she needs to buy new pajamas as she hasn't bought any since middle school, and the game promptly forces you to do that... never mind the fact that you already had to pay for new pajamas way back in episode 7.
* SlapSlapKiss: Pretty much defines your Candy's relationship with Castiel. A bunch of teasing insults and then BAM! A compliment or action that has Candy (or him) blushing. He also tries to kiss Candy once but quickly reveals he was just joking...and then he starts teasing Candy for taking him seriously.
* StatusQuoIsGod: After everything they've been through and after helping each other out on some pretty major occasions, Nathaniel and Castiel still refuse to be friends. Candy even [[LampshadeHanging Lampshades]] this by pointing out that there can't be a Sweet Amoris High without Castiel and Nathaniel fighting.
** Even after all her character development and two arcs revolving around her [[BreakTheHaughty experiencing the consequences of spreading rumours]], Peggy still thinks it's appropriate to [[spoiler: tell everyone Melody and Mr. Faraize are having an affair]] in episode 39. [[PlayedForDrama Your Candy lets her have it for being so inconsiderate and never learning anything.]]

For example in episode 13 you can choose to buy the amp everyone gave you money for or use that same money buy yourself an outfit. And yes, they ''will'' get mad at you if you choose option 2.
** The choice to break up Leigh and Rosalya in Episode 6.
** In episode 31, you have the choice not to forgive Nina for [[spoiler: lying to an amnesiac Lysander about being his girlfriend]] after finding out [[spoiler: her father abandoned her family and her mother is severely depressed.]] [[VideoGameCrueltyPunishment You do miss an illustration, though.]]
** And speaking of illustrations, sometimes the game will use an illustration as an incentive to do the cruel/selfish thing. [[spoiler: Two major examples are episode 18, where you have to hurt Castiel (even if he has a low LO'M) if you want the illustration and episode 27 where you have to stop being your helpful self again, if you want the illustrations.]] Since you need illustrations for 100% Completion, it's common for players to play the story with the nice choice and then use a single episode replay to get the illustration.

After taking a moment to digest this, she goes to check on Nathaniel in his room and [[CovertPervert immediately gets distracted by the fact that he's only wearing boxers]]. Right after this line, the tone gets serious again.

* OldFlameFizzle: When Kentin comes back from military camp, his affinity drops significatly, regardless of how you treated him before he left. However, since he's still a love interest, you can raise his affinity once again.

* SelectiveObliviousness: Despite all the evidence, Amber refuses to belive that her brother is being abused by their father. It isn't until Candy takes action against him that Amber begins to accept what's been happening.
* ShipTease: Upon meeting each other, Lucy and Armin share some moments that could definitately be interprested as romantic. A few episodes later, Armin brings her up again and hopes that she'll be at the play, and is the only one of the love interests to do so. However, since Armin is still a datable character and Lucy is a huge flirt in general, it's easy to guess that this relationship will remain platonic.

** Nina follows Lysander around and always shows up to his concerts. She is also an active member and president of the Lysander Fanclub (of which she and/or your Candy are the only member(s)). If Lysander likes you, then Nina certainly doesn't.

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: In episode 16 of HSL, Candy can kinda sorta confess her feelings in an argument with Castiel. It does not end the argument.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Candy gives one to Dakota in episode 19 of HSL in the fitting room scene if she chooses to spend the rest of the date with him. She also gives one to Castiel in episode 23 of HSL if she chooses to confide in him.
* AuthorAvatar: Chinomiko, the game's designer, appears from time to time in HSL to explain the gimmick of an episode. She also explains the rules of the game to newcomers also only in HSL.

After returning from the camp, this aspect of his character is considerably toned down. Even if he still likes you he doesn't follow you around as much.
** Nina follows Lysander around and always shows up to his concerts. She is also an active member and president of the Lysander Fanclub (of which she and/or your Candy are the only member(s)). If Lysander likes you, then Nina certianly doesn't.
