Makes perfect sense given that ham radio, where the name comes from, is considered rather vintage nowadays. Unless you're an amateur radio hobbyist, that is.

Not really sure that belongs in Totally Radical, doesn't seem like it's using outdated references for anything and seems more like a jab at the Alt-Right

* Even white nationalism has jumped on the bandwagon with the alt-right, whose members use memes and dress stylishly. This is also OlderThanTheyThink, as the original fascists in the 20th century were also very image-conscious.

* Parents using new slang. Half the time they just use it totally wrong, and the other half they just sound stupid anyway.
* In general, any attempt to connect with a younger generation by using their slang is counterproductive, because part of the reason that slang exists is to ''distinguish'' the younger generation from the preceding ones. An older person trying to use youth slang is already a category mistake. Much better simply to use normal language, rather than trying to pretend to be something you're not.

Sounds like a justification for the text speak, which is doubtful, since quite a lot of people use it without this reasoning (which doesn't make emulating it any better)

** World Youth Day 2008 took place in Australia, and the attendees got religious text messages on their mobiles. These switched the "you" for a "u" and so on. An article was published about how they were doing it to "speak their language", and quoting "experts" on how the message would be "seen as cool". They somehow didn't get that people use text speak because it's just quicker (and costs less on programs that charge per character).
