In the books the Greek gods have moved to the United States, and their home, Olympus, is now located above the Empire State Building. They have many [[HalfHumanHybrid demigod]] children with mortal humans. These demigods [[WeirdnessMagnet attract mythological monsters]], so they have go to a safe haven in Long Island, NY, called Camp Half-Blood, and learn to fight. The books get progressively DarkerAndEdgier throughout the series as a war with the Titans approaches.

* {{God}}: Weirdly hand-waved, or something. In the first book, Percy asks if God is real, and Dionysus talks about that dealing with the metaphysical or something to that effect. After that, the question's never brought up again.
** He said that topic would be "getting metaphysical" and the Olympians don't know if the Abrahamic God exists any more than humans do. So the answer is more of a shrug than a hand-wave.
** The ancient Greeks did in fact have a temple devoted to the "Agnostos Theos" (which means "Unknown God") to keep from angering any gods they might not know about. In the Bible, St. Paul identifies this god as the Christian God.
*** As part of a theological point about the absurdity of the idea and demonstrating that something was missing
