It actually turned him on watching her fighting and hacking enemies away.

* BrotherSisterIncest: Rei was in love with Shinji even though she was his mother's clon. However Shinji regarded her like a sister and was [[HeroesWantRedheads in love with Asuka]]. Still when Rei revealed her genetic make-up to him and Shinji figured out her feelings he did not seem concerned about her origins. In fact he told: "If you wanted a threesome with us why didn't you ask us?". After the FinalBattle, Shinji [[spoiler:[[MarryThemAll claimed]] Rei, [[FieryRedhead Asuka]] and [[TheLadette Misato]] as his wives.]]

* CruelToBeKind: In the noncanonical side-story Shinji meets his counterpart of the original universe. To force his counterpart to know the price of failure and get his act together, Shinji [[spoiler:makes his younger self believing that he is going to behead Asuka.]] When the younger Shinji screams [[BigNo "NO!"]] right before the axe-blow intentionally misses, Shinji suggests him earnestly stopping his self-pity party, growing a spine and fighting to defend [[HeroesWantRedheads Asuka]] and other people he cares about.

* FreakinessShame: The first signs of [[BloodKnight Asuka]] was transforming into a ''[[TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}} Khornate]]'' [[TheBerserker berserker]], were the white of her eyes becoming red and her crying blood tears. She tried to hide it and thought it meant that she was a freak, but [[AntiHero Shinji]] told her that it was a gift and not something to be ashamed of... and [[HeroesWantRedheads he]] [[AmazonChaser still found her hot]], not matter what.

* GrewASpine: A darker example. After being abandoned by his father, Shinji found a mentor who raised him and forced him to grow a spine. However his teacher was an amoral trickster, and Shinji grew into a trickster, violent, mostly uncaring asshole. [[AntiHero He STILL fights to protect humanity and he only targets people who is worse than him or has tried to make him harm]], and he still cares for other people (such like [[HeroesWantRedheads Asuka]], Rei and Misato. May Heaven help you if you hurt them), but he is a ManipulativeBastard and a {{Jerkass}}.

* HeroesWantRedheads: As soon as he saw [[FieryRedhead Asuka]] Shinji could not keep his hands off her.

* InLoveWithYourCarnage: [[AntiHero Shinji]] honesty tells [[FieryRedhead Asuka]] that watching her [[TheBerserker fighting]] and hacking enemies away [[HeroesWantRedheads turns him on]].

** And [[HeroesWantRedheads Shinji]] became completely dependent on [[FieryRedhead Asuka]] through the history. [[spoiler:Her death at the hands of a MP-Eva]] [[DespairEventHorizon broke him down completely]]. He was so crushed and shell-shocked that he [[spoiler:[[AlwaysSaveTheGirl asked]] Rei starting out Third Impact in order to bring her and [[ParentalSubstitute Misato back]].]]

* LoveAtFirstSight: [[AntiHero Shinji]] [[HeroesWantRedheads fell really, really, really HARD]] for [[FieryRedhead Asuka]] [[{{Tsundere}} Langley]] [[TheBerserker Sohryu]] when he met her.

* MarryThemAll: Subverted. For most of the story Shinji clearly considers [[FieryRedhead Asuka]] [[HeroesWantRedheads his girlfriend]], Rei his surrogate sister and Misato her surrogate mother. However, Rei's crush on Shinji (and her willingness to talk Asuka into a threesome) and Misato's proclivity to tease him complicate matters. Shinji did not plan getting married to anyone other than Asuka, but when [[spoiler:the four of them ascend to godhood]], Shinji takes the three of them as his wives out of a desire to make them happy.

* MoralityChain: In this story [[AntiHero Shinji]] is a psychotic, arrogant, manipulative {{Jerkass}} with little empathy. Believe it or not, if it weren't for [[HeroesWantRedheads his girlfriend]] [[{{Tsundere}} Asuka]], [[SurpriseIncest his surrogate -or so he thinks- sister]] [[TheQuietOne Rei]], [[ParentalSubstitute his surrogate mother]] [[TheLadette Misato]], [[ThoseTwoGuys his friends Touji and Kensuke]]... he would be way, way worse. Before moving to Tokyo-3 he regarded people as tools to be used and discarded or morons. But after finding them Shinji begins to show love, empathy, tenderness, caring, pity-when he is around them, and he even tries to use his well-trained manipulative skills for good purposes.

* ShipTease: There were some Shinji/Rei and Shinji/Misato hints, but ninety percent of the teasing was Shinji/Asuka as soon as Asuka's first appearance (sooner, actually. Shinji was [[PsychicPowers scanning the ship mentally]], and when he found her mind burning with passion he was instantly drawn to it. And when they met [[HeroesWantRedheads he]] thought "So this is what lust feels like"). Teasing in that chapter included Shinji and Asuka sneaking peeks at each other when they were undressing and Shinji wondering if he could romance that [[BrokenBird wounded]], [[{{Tsundere}} hot-tempered]] [[FieryRedhead red-haired]] [[TheBerserker berserker]].

* TakeOverTheWorld: Shinji often mentions in passing that he plots to conquer the world after the Angel War. His motivation for it varies depending on the time: he is ambitious just like that, he doesn't want anything hurt him and Asuka again, or in revenge for Asuka, Rei and Misato getting hurt. Whatever the case may be, for the end of the story [[spoiler:he's become the God-King of humanity and [[HeroesWantRedheads Asuka]], [[BrotherSisterIncest Rei]] and [[StacysMom Misato]] are his three Queens ruling alongside him.]]

** [[AntiHero Shinji]] is a violently protective boyfriend. Very violent and very protective. Hurt [[HeroesWantRedheads Asuka]] -or [[SurpriseIncest Rei]] or [[ParentalSubstitute Misato]] for that matter- at any way, shape or form and your agony will be ''endless''. Asuka finds his attitude... arousing.

* YearOutsideHourInside: [[AlienGeometries Within the Black Moon]] time is warped and it slips away differently between two points. Shinji spent a short while taking part in a meeting, and when he exited that area to meet [[HeroesWantRedheads Asuka]] and [[SurpriseIncest Rei]] found that at least one week had passed.

* DualWielding: Asuka often fights using two weapons simultaneously. She likes to use twin hatches, but in the FinalBattle her HumongousMecha was equipped with a battle-axe and a barbed whip.
