''The Neverending Road'' is a ''Manga/HikaruNoGo'' ''ContinuationFic'' written by [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/464938/Leitbur Leitbur]] that follows much of the primary cast following the events of Hokuto Cup at the end of the manga series. On FF.net it's indexed under "Angst", but seems to mostly follow the same level of "Action" the main series does, with a "Romance" B-plot. There are also three side stories following supporting characters.

* IThoughtEveryoneCouldDoThat: The significance of him becoming a pro go player in three years has not sunk into Hikaru yet. No matter how many times his peers and colleagues have spelled it out to his face, it just doesn't seem to register. Yes, he has acknowledged that he was being called a genius, and all those RedBaron titles bestowed on him despite his displeasure, but he never truly gets that his achievements mean that much in the Go world. From an outsider's perspective, he did not have a mentor, only played in a school go club prior to insei-hood, and already climbed to the level of Akira Touya in just ''three years''. ** Finding a purpose or a goal in the current profession or trying to be in said job, finding themselves unable to grow due to issues. A lot of lower dans and insei have no idea what their goal is beyond passing the exam and just hoping to get enough wins to move up. Many found themselves jealous at supposedly talented people who made seem so easy and look like they got it easy based on favoritism. Even relatively powerful Ochi, Waya, and Isumi has their troubles with their self-esteem, self-importance, anger, or jealousy. This stagnation could severely impact the mental state to the point of self-destruction.
** Koyo's biggest fear was his son's decisions or lack thereof when it comes to his career. All his life, Akira had been told he was to bring Japan back to greatness again and to fill in his father's footsteps in the Go world. Nobody ever asked Akira if he wanted to do something other than Go. He also feared that his son might've been doing [[WellDoneSonGuy Go out for his father's love]] mixed with a genuine love for the game. He worried he might have failed his son despite his best intentions.
** The death of a loved one or someone incredible known to someone could severely impact someone. Hikaru is still grieving Sai and his granddad and has yet to tell anybody the former is gone forever, losing the Go world a genius who died a year ago supposedly. Touya Koyo has a feeling Sai might've died shortly after their match, something that he doesn't like to entertain, knowing that his rival that he waited so long for passed on without a rematch.

* RealityEnsues: Just because Hikaru is one of the best players Japan ever has in their roster does not mean that Hikaru doesn't make mistakes. In fact, Hikaru always made known of his mistakes to his opponents, partly a reason why Nase became romantically interested in him because he treated her as someone serious who could've read the board just as well as he did. A chapter had Hikaru note that he was knocked out of a Speed Go tournament early. On the other hand, just because the lower dans are weak does not mean that they don't have the capacity to grow and evolve.

* AlmightJanitor: Akira and Hikaru. By the time Hikaru made it to the Kisei League, he is at least a 7-Dan level of skill. They casually wiped out the lower dans and could put up a fight against their older colleagues. Hikaru lampshaded whether or not the new system was to coronate Akira.

* AccidentalTruth: Koyo and Akira figured that in some way, Hikaru might've been or proxy of the ghost of Shusuku Honinbo. Hikaru didn't react outwardly but Hikaru wanted to say it when Koyo told him.

* GreenEyedMonster: Waya and Ochi towards Japan's Princes of Go. Their jealousy almost ended up ruining their match against Hikaru. Both got over it when they realized their jealousy would not help anybody including their own growth.

* TheGhost: Sai. He has a major influence in Hikaru and every other character who is familiar with Sai. Till this day, everyone remembered him as the super powerful Go player in NetGo who beat the Meijin.
