Shailene Diann Woodley (born November 15, 1991) is an American actress. Originally receiving some She began her career at the age of ten, acting in various commercials and small parts on television. She even played Kaitlin Cooper on ''Series/TheOC'' - but the role got recast with Willa Holland when the character became a regular. Her first major role came as Amy Juergens on ''Series/TheSecretLifeOfTheAmericanTeenager''. Despite the show's tepid reception among critics, Shailene's performance was noted to be a standout. Sure enough, she made her feature film debut in an impressive way - playing the daughter of Creator/GeorgeClooney in ''Film/TheDescendants''.

She rose to stardom in TheNewTens starring in films based on YoungAdultLiterature. ''Film/TheSpectacularNow'', ''{{Literature/Divergent}}'' and ''Literature/TheFaultInOurStars'' earned her both
attention for and acclaim. As she entered her lead role on Creator/ABCFamily's ''Series/TheSecretLifeOfTheAmericanTeenager'', mid-twenties, she sought to distance herself from teen films and YA roles. Playing Lindsay Mills, the real life girlfriend of Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone's ''Snowden'', and a young single mother in HBO's ''Literature/BigLittleLies'' appears to be helping her do just that.

Outside of acting,
she's since appeared in films like ''Film/TheDescendants'' as Creator/GeorgeClooney's daughter, Hazel Grace in [[Film/TheFaultInOurStars the film adaptation]] of Creator/JohnGreen's ''Literature/TheFaultInOurStars'', an avid environmental activist, and Tris in the ''Film/{{Divergent}}'' film series, based on [[Literature/{{Divergent}} the book series co-founder of the same name]].
All It Takes organization - a non-profit organisation dedicated to teaching young people about conserving the environment. She also prefers to live out of a travel bag - after giving the house she owned to her grandmother - only drinks water she collects herself from springs, eats a tablespoon of clay a day to "remove metals from the body" and [[http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/gossip/la-et-mg-shailene-woodley-arrested-dapl-20161010-snap-htmlstory.html openly protests]] against certain issues.

!!Tropes related to her career:
* MsFanservice: She has few qualms about being nude onscreen.
* ThePeteBest: On ''The OC'', she played Kaitlin in season 1. In Season 3 when the writers decided to make Kaitlin a more important character, the role was recast to Willa Holland.
%%* SheReallyCanAct: Before ''The Descendants'' most people had only seen her on ''Secret Life''.
* StarMakingRole: Although she was well known as Amy in ''Secret Life'' and Alexandra in ''The Descendants'', Tris in ''Divergent'' and Hazel in ''The Fault in Our Stars'' really launched her career into the stratosphere.
* ThoseTwoActors: With Ansel Elgort in ''Film/{{Divergent}}'' and ''Film/TheFaultInOurStars''.
* TypeCasting: All of her best-known and highest-praised roles are as angsty teenagers either dying, self-destructing or close friends with someone who is in movies adapted from YoungAdultLiterature (''Film/TheDescendants'' somewhat straddles the line, being told by a middle-aged man but mainly about teenagers). Her role in ''Secret Life'' also fits this mold.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: She was cast to play ComicBook/MaryJaneWatson in the ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries''; while she did film scenes intended for use in its [[Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan2 second (and ultimately final) installment]], her part was deleted altogether in the final product. The ''Amazing Spider-Man'' franchise itself fizzled out when Creator/{{Sony}} partnered with Creator/{{Marvel}} Studios to produce a new ComicBook/SpiderMan film series, meaning her iteration of the character may likely never see the light of day.
