* ForWantOfANail: In "The Two Valkyria" in ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4'', if you pick Selvaria to pick Crymaria, she says that it could very well have been Crymaria who was picked by Prince Maximilian instead of her.

* {{Revenge}}: The reason she stayed in the army after the First European War. [[spoiler:She almost lost it when she met Geld, and was about to KickTheSonOfABitch until Largo talked her down]].

* FlatEarthAtheist: A variation. He think Selvaria's Valkyria power is a joke, and that victory can only be achieved by the Empire's military power and good strategy instead of relying on some MagicalGirl power.

* HeroOfAnotherStory: He's the protagonist of the "Behind Her Blue Flame" DLC, a side story which deals with the early days of the war when the empire was first invading Gallia.

* NonActionGuy: During the first few missions of the DLC he's no fighter, his potentials reflecting this with having a penalty when attacking enemies and being very very fragile. Johann is better off playing his intended support role, allowing Selvaria to steamroll anything and anyone in her way while he backs her up by destroying barricades and healing her. Though this changes later on. See TookALevelInBadass below.

* PunchClockVillain: A heroic and nice guy that just happened to be working for the Imperial invasion. Quite frankly, he can be considered a hero since he rescued [[AntiVillain Selvaria]] from the gas traps [[FatBastard General Damon]] set.
* TookALevelInBadass: After taking Ghirlandaio with Selvaria, he requests to be reassigned as a scout to fight on the front lines instead of an engineer. He also gains the nickname "Oswald the Iron" after his BigDamnHeroes moment when saving Selvaria. If you play the Covert Ops "Azure Witch" secret mission, you get to see Oswald the Iron in action as a very powerful scout with all of Johann's strengths and none of his weaknesses.

Born and [[JustForPun bread]] as a baker, Alicia was reluctant to go to war, but joined the militia to protect her hometown of Bruhl. After being rescued by Welkin, she joins Squad 7 as his second-in-command and love interest.

* BoobsOfSteel: While not as endowed as Selvaria, she does have one of if not the largest bust in squad 7. The steel part comes in when she discovers she's [[spoiler:a Valkyria]].

* BoobsOfSteel: She's best known for two things: her bust size, and being a very thorough badass (more so when she goes into Valkyria mode).

* ArtificialInsolence: Her Humanitarian potential means she will only obey your very first order to attack an enemy. For the rest of the battle, she will outright refuse your orders to attack anything and will not engage in self defense with her squadmates.

* TheLoad: Kind of borders on this, thanks to her "Humanitarian" potential, which keeps her from getting the job done.
** That said, her potential doesn't stop her from being usable for recon or for defensive overwatch. She has her uses, but being an offensive tip of the spear isn't one of them.

Selvaria only fell in love with Maximilian because she believed him to be an honourable and benevolent prince, and was under the impression that he saved her from being a lab rat. And considering that he is very adept at playing the part of a Prince Charming when the need arises, it's most likely she never figured out his true nature until [[spoiler: he ordered her to use her Final Flame]]. The anime also states that she was taken under Maximilian's wing when she was only thirteen, and thus, was blind to his villainy because of her age.

* BodyguardCrush: Towards Maximilian, albeit one-sided. [[spoiler: According to the anime, it seems that Maximilian hardly needs a bodyguard at all: ([[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking killing all by himself, with a sword, the entire group of assassins sent to take him out who managed to break into his estate and kill all the guards with ease...]]), leading to the question of what she's even doing there.]]
** Well, at one point, he's seen walking casually through some ruins currently situated within a warzone, and treats a group of Gallian officers threatening to shoot him with barely a pretense of interest. Fortunately, this intimidates them enough that he doesn't even need to ask Selvaria to turn them all into paste to prove his point.

* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Even without her Valkyria power, she is already a OneManArmy. With Valkyria power, she can wipe out the whole army easily.

* ForWantOfANail: In "The Two Valkyria" in VC4, if you pick Selvaria to pick Crymaria, she says that it could very well have been Crymaria who was picked by Prince Maximilian instead of her.
* FreakinessShame: Everyone is terrified of her because of her Valkyria powers, even the men under her own command.

* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Thought Maximilian was a PrinceCharming... unfortunately he was anything but. The anime explains this by stating she was a child when he rescued her from the facility.

* IOweYouMyLife: Her attitude towards Maximilian. [[spoiler: However it is revealed that his father, the emperor, was sponsoring the research facility responsible for experimenting on Valkyria, and that Maximilian did not rescue, but buy her from the facility. Meaning that he invoked this trope in order to make her loyal. Which, considering [[WifeHusbandry her age]] when this happened, did not require much convincing.]]

* LineOfSightName: Maximilian named her after a flower growing in the research facility garden.
* LoveMartyr: Played with. While she holds no illusion of redeeming Maximilian, she does believe that she can win his love if she performs her role as his general to her utmost ability... an idea that ''he'' put in her head through repeated emotional manipulation.
* MsFanservice: Beyond her [[BuxomIsBetter large bust]], she has a very pronounced body and [[ShesGotLegs legs]]. In the anime, she gets to wear many more outfits, such as fancy dresses and swimwear and even gets a ShowerScene with GodivaHair and {{Sideboob}}.

* OneManArmy: Even when not in her Valkyria form, she is still a very tough opponent.
* OpenSecret: Though she tries to put on a facade of being a cold, ruthless military commander who is solely committed to the Empire's cause, GenreSavvy players can pick up on Selvaria's true motives as early as her introduction. As for in-universe, while those in Selvaria's service are unaware of her weakness for Maximilian or of his true nature, Gregor and Jaeger are. And in the anime, the latter repeatedly alludes at this with backhanded remarks.

* RedEyesTakeWarning: She has red eyes and is a villain.
* SleepsInTheNude: She is seen waking up nude in her bed in the "Selvaria's Wonderful Day Off!" OVA. CensorShadow is used to preserve her modesty as she sits up.

* WeakButSkilled: Only in comparison to her fellow Valkyria. She has neither the natural talent of[[spoiler: Alicia]] nor the raw power of Crymaria, but makes up for it with unmatched control over her Valkyria abilities.

* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:She views Alicia as this after dueling with her]].

* TheAce: Played with/subverted. While Welkin is a tactical genius and incredible battlefield leader, he's not the best at actual soldiering. When on missions outside the Edelweiss, he's average at best when compared to other Scouts.

* BabiesEverAfter: At the end of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'', he and Alicia have a daughter, [[spoiler:who they named Isara in memory of the other Isara]].

* BattleCouple: He proposes to Alicia right before the final mission to destroy the Marmota and confront Maximillion. Alicia [[TearsOfJoy smiles tearfully]] and consents.

* HotScientist: Goes on to continue her studies of microorganisms, eventually discovery a new, medically valuable bacteria that she chooses to name after "a certain EWII hero."
