[[folder: Squad 7 Main Characters]]
!! Lieutenant Welkin Gunther
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_welkin_gunther.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SusumuChiba (Japanese), Creator/DaveWittenberg (English).
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4''

The son of the legendary General Gunther, Welkin just wanted to live a quiet life as a teacher. This plan gets sidetracked when The Imperials invade his hometown of Bruhl. Welkin quickly adapts and joins the Gallian Militia, becoming the leader of Squad 7 of the 3rd Regiment. Using his scientific knowledge, he quickly becomes a strategist rivaling his father and organizes Squad 7 into the Imperials' greatest threat. In combat, Welkin generally doesn't fight directly, and instead gives orders to the squad from his father's tank, the ''Edelweiss''.

----

* TheAce: PlayedWith and {{Subverted}}. While Welkin is a tactical genius and incredible battlefield leader, he's not the best at actual soldiering. When on missions outside the Edelweiss, he's average at best when compared to other Scouts.
* AncestralWeapon: The ''Edelweiss''. Although granted, said weapon was originally a prototype made during the First Europan War that simply didn't reach mass production by the time it ended.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: His knowledge of animals and nature in general has often been useful for creating impressive strategies.
* BabiesEverAfter: At the end of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'', he and Alicia have a daughter, [[spoiler:who they named Isara in memory of his foster sister]].
* BadassBookworm: He doesn't look like one, but his tactical and operative planning wins every single victory for Squad 7.
* BattleCouple: He proposes to Alicia right before the final mission to destroy the Marmota and confront Maximillian. Alicia [[TearsOfJoy smiles tearfully]] and accepts.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: His reaction when he found out that [[spoiler:Faldio was the one who sniped Alicia]]? Oooh, boy...
* BunnyEarsLawyer:
** If he says you look like a beetle, don't worry, that's a compliment.
** The first time he rendezvous them, The Nameless from ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII'' gets the dubious honor of being compared to chameleons, since they are "not supposed to exist". Most of this compliment goes over poor [[AntiHero Kurt]]'s head. Nonetheless, he acknowledges Welkin's skill during their short time battling together.
* CatchPhrase: ''Squad 7, move out!''
* CallingYourAttacks:
--> '''Welkin:''' '''''THIS IS AN ORDER!'''''
* CharacterDevelopment: He goes from a university student to a popular military leader in ''Valkyira Chronicles''.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Often. One notable example, he compliments Alicia's body armour by comparing it to the carapace of an insect, and then trails off from there. In the anime, he's even more scatterbrained like this.
** His EstablishingCharacterMoment in the first game sees him get distracted by some fish heading upstream, whom he stops to admire and sketch in his notebook. In the Japanese dub, he's basically talking to himself; but in the English dub, he talks to the fish before he starts sketching.
* CooldownHug: To Alicia at several points. He even gives her a Cooldown Proposal towards the end.
* EnsignNewbie: His early defining feature, leading to Rosie and Largo [[DislikesTheNewGuy disliking the new guy]]. Unlike other examples, he's fully competent and prepared despite fitting the trope to a T otherwise -- his university training make him legally qualified for his rank, with his father's legacy a recurring comment but unimportant to his own success.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Talking to the fish before sketching them. Eventually turned into a ChekhovsHobby.
* {{Expy}}: Of Yang Wen-li of ''Literature/LegendOfTheGalacticHeroes'', although Welkin's not lazy or a drunk. However, their similar approach to strategy and idealism are clear giveaways that Welkin's based on him.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Went from a normal unversity student to a powerful and popular commander.
* HappilyMarried: In the ending, he marries Alicia and has a daughter.
* TheHero: The main character of the story and the one to lead Gallia to victory.
* HeroicBSOD: The combination of [[spoiler: Isara's death]] and [[spoiler: Alicia being shot by a mysterious sniper and left in critical condition]] puts him into one for a while.
* IChooseToStay: In ''Valkyria Chronicles II'', [[spoiler:even after most of Lanseal's population dwindled following the Rebel attack on August, he and Alicia decide to stay and help the remaining students]].
* InsufferableGenius: On occasion in ''Valkyria Chronicles II'', much to Alicia's exasperation
* MilitaryMaverick: Welkin usually comes up with incredibly unorthodox strategies to win his battles.
* NatureHero: Odd variation. He's a nature otaku, and every military strategy he uses is related to or inspired by nature in some way. Also, he's shown to be happiest when he be in a completely natural environment, just studying the wildlife.
* NiceGuy: Many so-called heroes would have much to learn from Welkin. He's a quiet, sweet-hearted man who likes nature. [[spoiler:[[BewareTheNiceOnes Just don't shoot his girlfriend.]]]]
* OfficerAndAGentleman: Welkin is the good soldier archetype, through and through. He follows his orders dutifully, refrains from war crimes, is courteous and merciful even to his Imperial opponents (provided they haven't crossed the MoralEventHorizon).
* ThePowerOfLove: One of Welkin's hidden Potentials is even called this: all his stats are raised when Alicia is in battle with him.
* RousingSpeech: Instead of delivering an order, Welkin does this instead when the "Awaken Potential" or "Awaken All" orders are used.
--> '''Awaken Potential''': "You can do this! Trust in yourself!"\
'''Awaken All''': "You all are so much more than this! I know it!"
* TheStrategist: The most powerful weapon in the entire Gallian army is Lieutenant Gunther's ''brain''.
* TankGoodness: Commander of the Edelweiss.

!! Sergeant Alicia Melchiott
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_alicia_melchiott.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MarinaInoue (Japanese), Creator/ColleenOShaughnessey (English).
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4''

Born and bre(a)d as a baker, Alicia was reluctant to go to war, but joined the militia to protect her hometown of Bruhl. After being rescued by Welkin, she joins Squad 7 as his second-in-command and love interest.

----

* AllLovingHero: Her kindness and compassion can resonate even to those who should be her enemies, [[spoiler:such as her dealings with the Imperial soldier Fritz.]]
* BabiesEverAfter: She has a child with Welkin at the end of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'', appropriately named Isara.
* BadassAdorable: Well, would you expect a girly girl like her to be a GameBreaker who [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomps]] [[spoiler:'''Selvaria''']]?
* BadassesWearBandanas: She wears a red baker's bandana even in battle.
* BeleagueredAssistant: Especially in the anime, although it's more due to that she tends to get worked up over Welkin's hijinks easily.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Occasionally serves as this for Welkin.
* CriticalStatusBuff: Late in the game she gains the [[spoiler: Valkyria]] potential, which buffs her stats once she goes below 50% health.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler:Once she discovers her Valkyria powers later in the game.]]
* DudeMagnet: She has the likes of Noce and Faldio fall for her, as well as eventually Welkin.
* EvenGirlsWantHer: Dallas most certainly does. She’s devastated when Alicia marries Welkin.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: She's more of a baker.
* GirlishPigtails: She wears her hair in twin tails.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: She gets over her injuries rather quickly. [[spoiler:Suspiciously quickly...]]
* HeroicBSOD: She has a major one when [[spoiler:she discovers her Valkyria powers.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Subverted. She planned on using the Valkyria's flame to sacrifice herself and destroy the Marmota, but Welkin talked her out of it.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: After [[spoiler:discovering her Valkyria powers]]. Welkin fixes this by [[spoiler:reminding her that even if she has these powers, she doesn't have to use them and she can still follow her dreams once the war ends.]]
* TheLancer: Welkin's NumberTwo in Squad 7.
* LightningBruiser: When fully levelled and given the best rifle in the game.
* LoveTriangle: More like a LoveDodecahedron in her case. With Noce, Dallas, and Faldio having feelings for her, while she is in love with Welkin.
%%* MysteriousWaif
* PersonOfMassDestruction: As a [[spoiler:Valkyria, she is capable of destroying any soldier or tank with ease.]]
* PurposelyOverpowered: [[spoiler:Discover all of Alicia's potentials. Issue her an "Unlock Potential" order. Win the game.]]
* SheIsAllGrownUp: The epilogue shows that the few years after the war, getting married, and becoming a mother have treated her quite well.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She and Welkin hook up after the events of the main game.
* SweetBaker: Alicia's goal after the war is to become a baker, whose kind side tends to come out through her baking. After mistaking Welkin for a spy and holding him at gunpoint, she shows her softer side by bringing him some bread she baked herself as an apology.
* TeamChef: She apparently cooks meals for the squad at various times.
* ThatWomanIsDead: She renounces [[spoiler:her status as a woman by the time she is about to do a HeroicSacrifice to stop the Marmota]]. It doesn't last [[spoiler:thanks to Welkin's intervention]].
* TookALevelInBadass: She was always competent from the start, [[spoiler:but when her Valkyria powers awaken, she becomes a ''beast''.]]
* TranquilFury: When she first [[spoiler:awakens as a Valkyria. To add insult to injury, Alicia didn't appear to be in full control of her body, yet managed to deliver a CurbStompBattle to Selvaria, while dodging all of the latter's attacks with minimal effort.]]
* UnwantedFalseFaith: [[spoiler:Finds the reaction of many people in the army/militia to her Valkyrur heritage to be rather disturbing.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: In the anime and manga, but ''not'' in the original game.

!! Corporal Brigitte "Rosie" Stark
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_rosie_stark.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MegumiToyoguchi (Japanese, games) and Creator/JunkoMinagawa (Japanese, anime), Hedy Burress (English).
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4''

Corporal and Shocktrooper. Rosie was a singer, but the war forced her to join the front lines of the militia effort. Because of certain events in her past, she hates Darcsens, and this instantly causes friction between her and Isara.

----

* AmazonianBeauty: The HotSpringsEpisode in the anime shows she has a muscular build, which doesn't detract from her attractive appearance.
* BadassBoast: "Oh, they'll be running. I'm a damn shocktrooper."
* CharacterDevelopment: [[spoiler: She gets over her hatred of Darcsen over the course of the game. One of her hidden potentials even boosts her stats when around Darcsen units.]]
* CoolBigSis: She even has it listed as a potential -- "she just can't abandon her fellow shocktroopers."
%%* DeadpanSnarker
* {{Determinator}}: She refuses to give up no matter how hopeless the situation is.
* DislikesTheNewGuy: Along with Largo, Rosie has a low opinion of Welkin at first.
* FieryRedhead: Loves to be in the thick of it in combat, and is prone to flying off the handle.
* {{Flanderization}}: Although a good portion of her Valkyria Chronicles character arc is growing beyond her prejudice, Valkyria Chronicles 4 turns this into pretty much her only characteristic.
* GlamorousWartimeSinger: Rosie used to be a barmaid before the war, but still sings occasionally. She remarks that it was hardly glamorous, though. She gets back into singing on a full-time basis after the war.
* InterfaceSpoiler: Shown to be distrustful towards Isara, but lacks the Darscen Hater potential. [[spoiler: In fact, she gets the reverse of it sometime after the latter dies]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She starts off as a jerk who eventually gets over her hatred of Darcsens and warms up to the rest of the squad.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Rosie's real name Brigitte Stark is AllThereInTheManual. As a civilian, she was a bartender and singer, and "Rosie" was apparently given to her by her regulars.
* ShipperOnDeck: For both Welkin/Alicia AND Eleanor/Largo.
* TakeThatKiss: Fond of blowing a kiss to her enemies... just after she guns them down.

!! Sergeant Largo Potter
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_largo_potter.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HisaoEgawa (Japanese, games), Creator/KenjiNomura (Japanese, anime), Creator/FredTatasciore (English).
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4''

Largo is a sergeant, and a veteran of the First Europan War. He served with Captain Eleanor Varrot and her lover Frederick, and still harbors a crush for her during the events of the game. Largo was at first hesitant of Welkin's leadership, but he quickly becomes one of Welkin's most trusted and supportive soldiers. Largo is also a sort of father figure to the rest of the members of Squad 7.

----

* AnchoredShip: Harbours feelings for Eleanor Varrot, but hasn't said anything about it due to the touchy subject of Frederick.
* TheBigGuy: Of the main group he's easily the largest and most physically imposing, just like most male Lancers.
* BerserkButton: Don't threaten the vegetables, or he'll hunt you down.
* BetaCouple: He eventually hooks up with Eleanor.
* CallToAgriculture: Largo always had a dream to have a vegetable garden.
* CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough: The Rough to Eleanor Varrot's Smooth.
* CoolOldGuy: Downplayed, but present; He's in his late thirties, compared to the rest of the cast, who are mostly teenagers.
* DislikesTheNewGuy: He dislikes Welkin when the latter joins Squad 7 and initially doubts his leadership skills.
* GentleGiant: He is quite a lot bigger than his peers (Lancer and all), but he is a very nice man who tries to stop Rosie from quarreling with Isara and make Eleanor think twice about murdering Geld.
* HappilyMarried: To Eleanor at the end.
* HeroicSecondWind: He has the Big Hearted potential, which keeps him alive past the point that he should have died.
-->"Ahh, a little spit'll hold me together!"
* HotbloodedSideburns: Largo sports an impressive pair, and he lives up to them well.
* TheLancer: Both literally (being a Lancer class) and to Welkin.
* OldSoldier: He's even peeved at first at taking orders from the much younger Welkin.
* SeriousBusiness: His view of vegetables, given that he was a farmer before fighting in the war.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: "VEGE-TA-BLES!"
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Although he was good friends with Frederick, unlike Eleanor, he did not go seeking revenge on Geld.

!! Corporal Isara Gunther
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_isara_gunther.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HoukoKuwashima (Japanese), Creator/LauraBailey (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4''

Daughter of the genius Darcsen engineer Theimer, and adopted daughter of General Gunther, hence making her Welkin's adopted sister. Isara is gentle and good-hearted, and very brave for such a small girl. She is also an absolute engineering genius, constantly coming up with innovations during the game that save Squad 7 countless times, including waterproofing the ''Edelweiss'' for immersion and creating smoke mortars (which border on GameBreaker territory).

----

* BewareTheNiceOnes: Not a kinder soul in Squad 7. Except when she's gunning down a fully armed enemy soldier in the beginning of the game, or piloting a giant-ass battle tank.
--> '''Isara''': I will thank you to watch your tongue in this house. You have to leave. ''Now''.
* CuteClumsyGirl: During the [[BeachEpisode beach trip]], she smacks the other players in a beach ball game no less than 3 times.
* ADeathInTheLimelight: In her focus chapter, she gets shot down.
* DisappearedDad: The Design Archives states that her parents died in a car crash -- this is why she's adopted by the Gunther family.
* FamedInStory: Squad 7 ''never'' forgets Isara [[spoiler:after her untimely demise]]. [[spoiler:Welkin and Alicia even name their daughter after her.]]
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:She gets shot down by imperials just as she asks Rosie to sing for her. She dies smiling in Welkin's arms.]]
* HappilyAdopted: She was taken in by the Gunthers, since her late father was a good friend of General Gunther, and loved and was loved by the family with all their hearts.
* TheHeart: She's so much The Heart that [[spoiler:her death is what motivates Squad 7 to really glue together as a family, and it is her memory that drives them to continue on. Rosie is ''devastated'' by her death.]] [[spoiler: She also ends up as this for the R&D department, who continue work on her plane after her death, with Leon driving it to perform a BigDamnHeroes rescue of Welkin and Alicia at the end of the game, while Kreis goes on to become the foremost authority on aeronautic engineering.]]
* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler:Isara is gentle, good-hearted, very brave and a cute small girl... who gets shot just as she and Rosie were just starting to accept each other.]]
* MissionControl: Since she is in the tank with Gunther, she is the one with whom he most frequently speaks to on the condition of the battle.
* ObliviousToLove: She isn’t aware of Ramal’s crush on her.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Dies soon. The "death curse" placed upon Creator/HoukoKuwashima's characters.]]
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Isara is one of the good-natured characters in the series, [[spoiler:but she gets shot down]].
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Feared water in her childhood, according to Welkin, and it's implied that this may still be true.
* WrenchWench: Isara is a really sweet, feminine and gentle version of this. The character archives mention that a wrench set that Welkins gives her is particularly dear to her.

!! Sergeant Zaka
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_zaka.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KazuyaNakai (Japanese), Creator/SteveBlum (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesII''

Darcsen engineer who helps Squad 7 as an informant. Squad 7 first meets him inside one of the Empire's Darcsen concentration camps. He does a lot to change Rosie's perception of Darcsens and proves a resourceful, intelligent ally. Eventually, he joins Squad 7 as a tank driver, piloting the tiny-yet-powerful light tank, the ''Shamrock''.

----

* AceCustom: The ''Shamrock'', a Gallian light tank that he has made his own customization to.
* BadassesWearBandanas: He wears a bandana on his head and is one of the heroes.
* TheEngineer: He knows a thing or two about machinery given his time as a prisoner who worked in the factories and mines.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Well one of them anyways. It opens during a few cutscenes. Apparently years of having to closely inspect frequently breaking mining and processing equipment has given him a habitual squint.
* FriendToAllChildren: Spends his time entertaining children while off-duty. In the ending, he opens Fouzen Toy Factory.
* GatlingGood: The ''Shamrock'''s turret can be equipped with a rotary-barrel cannot to bring MoreDakka.
* GentleGiant: Lampshaded when Ellet calls him a "grizzly bear", Zaka replies that he'd rather think himself as a "teddy bear".
* KillItWithFire: The ''Shamrock'' can be equipped with a flame thrower in its turret to clear entrenched infantry.
* LightningBruiser: His ''Shamrock'', by virtue of being a light tank. It is faster than the ''Edelweiss'' and less resistant to damage, but still much tougher than any infantry and quick enough to keep up with them. Coupled with its cannon, it can quickly bring vehicle-grade firepower to bare from vulnerable flanks.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: He is proud of being a Darcsen, he even paint the Shamrock with Darcsen pattern.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Doesn't believe in revenge, [[spoiler: even when most of his people are burnt to death inside a concentration camp, saying it won't bring them back to life.]]
* TheSixthRanger: He joins up quite a bit later in the game, and traditionally fits the standard slot.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Scouts]]
!! Aika Thompson
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_aika_thompson.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Saki Yasuda (Japanese, ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''), Mai Todo (Japanese, ''Valkyria Chronicles III''), Creator/GreyDeLisle (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII''

----

* TheCameo: From ''VideoGame/SkiesOfArcadia'', along with Vyse and the Medic.
* FieryRedhead: Red-haired and HotBlooded.
* GirlishPigtails: The same unusually-rigid pigtails she had in ''Skies of Arcadia''.
* IfYouDieICallYourStuff: Her phrase when calling the medic is basically this trope.
* PartsUnknown: Her and Vyse's bio imply that they're not even from the Europan continent.
* ShipTease: With Vyse, just like their home series. Some of her voice lines involve calling him "baby" and at the end of the game they hop on a boat and leave together, never to be seen again.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's afraid of ghosts and cockroaches. This never comes into play gameplay-wise, but she does mention it if her Nocturnal skill activates.
--> '''Aika''': I ain't afraid of the dark! ...just ghosts.

!! Cherry Stijnen
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherry_stijnen.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Saki Yasuda (Japanese)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

----
* DumbBlonde: She's TheDitz, and she's blonde. Pretty self-explanatory.
* StrugglingSingleMother: In her epilogue, she got married at age 17, had a daughter, and promptly got divorced. Now she devotes herself to raise her child.
* ValleyGirl: Her accent is pure Val, and even if she's killed, she keeps it up:
-->"Ugh... So lame... I'm like... Totally... Dying here..."

!! Hermes Kissinger
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_hermes_kissinger.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Keisuke Komoto (Japanese)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

* BadassesWearBandanas: Wears a bandana with cam pattern matches his uniform.
* BlessedWithSuck: His slim body makes it easy for him to get ladies, but the chronic fatigue that comes with it makes it hard for him to keep them.
* CareerEndingInjury: After the war, made progress on fulfilling his dream of becoming an action movie star, but he broke his leg during the filming of his first movie. Since then, he didn't receive any new role offers.
* CasanovaWannabe: Acts like a ladies man, but due to his [[BlessedWithSuck chronic fatigue]], he can't even stay out late on dates.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: In TheAnimeOfTheGame.

!! Freesia York
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_freesia_york.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KateHiggins (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

----

* TheDrifter: Wanders from town to town as an entertainer.
* LetsDance: While not saying the phrase itself, her quotes when selected is "watch me dance", and upon gettign a critical kill, she'll say "Next partner!"
* MsFanservice: In-universe, she is known to flaunt her beauty and physical grace.
* ParentalAbandonment: Orphaned at a young age, she learned to look out for herself and is unused to people relying on her.
* TheTease: {{Downplayed|Trope}}, she seems to be a casual and unashamed flirt, [[FlirtingUnderFire even under fire]], and referring to enemies exchanging bullets as "dance partners".
* TokenMinority: Freesia is pretty clearly Romani (or the local equivalent, anyway).

!! Wavy
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_wavy.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Keiichirou Yamamoto (Japanese)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

----

* BadassTeacher: Even opens a school for underprivileged children after the war.
* BerserkButton: [[BadassBoast "You will NOT harm my people!"]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: "Though a placid man, he fights ferociously to protect his loved ones."
* CoolOldGuy: OK, he's 37, but that's still much older than most of the squad members.
* GeniusBruiser: He may be a schoolteacher, but he's pretty tough even by soldier standards. Most notably, he's got the highest HP of all the Scouts.
* HappilyMarried: To an unnamed wife.
* StoneWall: Oddly for his class. It's even one of his potentials!
* TrueCompanions: With the squad's other Darcsens.

!! Montley Leonard
[[quoteright:340:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_montley_leonard.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Yui Kano (Japanese)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

----

* AfraidOfNeedles: Due to a close encounter with a stag deer. Gameplay-wise, it manifests as a negative potential that can activate when in close proximity with a Lancer.
* {{Courier}}: He was sought after the war by the postal service and hired him as a mail man. Unfortunately, they underestimated his speed; not knowing what to do in his down time, Leonard started to wander off, causing him to be chronically late with his deliveries.
* LeeroyJenkins: Has the Impatient potential.
* PointlessBandAid: Has one on his nose throughout the entirety of the game.

!! Musaad Mayfield

-->''"I wrote the book on trench warfare!"''\
''"Hold still and smile for the flash!"''\
''"I can dodge bullets, no problem!"''
* CoolOldGuy: He's middle-aged and a veteran of the First Europan War.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Played with. He's heavily scarred, but he's not really a bad guy.
* RedBaron: Known as "the mole" or "that damned mole," depending on which side you talk to.
* SecretCharacter: You get him by beating the game.
* SergeantRock: His ego is considerable, but Musaad is a seasoned warrior. Among [=EW1=] veterans, he is considered a living legend.
* WalkingTheEarth: After the conflict, he left Galia forever, saying that "My place has only ever been on the field of war." No one knows what happened to him since.
* WroteTheBook: Claims to have written the book on trench warfare.

* BadassBookworm: She was actually a classmate of Welkin's back at the university, and she's quite capable as a soldier.
* CannotSpitItOut: Towards Welkin, mainly out of pride.
* DudeMagnet: Due to her beauty and intelligence, she has always attracted the attention of many hopeful suitors.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: If killed she attempts to give one to Welkin.
* HopelessSuitor: She's harbored a crush on Welkin since their university days, but her reluctance to tell him means he hasn't noticed a thing.
* HotLibrarian: She ''could'' lose those glasses and let her hair down, but... she doesn't really ''need'' to.
* TheParagon: It helps that she has the "Born Leader" potential.

----

* HopelessSuitor: He has feelings for Alicia, but she only has eyes for Welkin.
* CommonalityConnection: His crush on Alicia comes from both serving together in the Bruhl Town Watch. He even has the Camadarie potential which gives a boots when other scouts are near him
* CrazyJealousGuy: Most of his character revolves around his crush on Alicia and the fact he's incredibly jealous of Welkin for being the one she likes. His 'Welkin Hater' potential makes him drop accuracy if Welkin is near him.
* HypocriticalHumor: Wonders [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim how Alicia can like "a rube like him"]], except him and Welkin come from the same town and Welkin spent most of his young adult life studying in the capital.
* RomanticRunnerUp: Becomes one for the OfficalCouple of Alicia and Welkin.
* SerenadeYourLover: He's a music composer and planned to serenade a romantic song for Alicia, but gave up on it after she married Welkin.

----

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Anyone who yells "Yay, happy grass!!" in the middle of a battle certainly qualifies.
* CuteClumsyGirl: She has the Klutz potential.
-->'''Nancy:''' Ooopsie! I dropped my bullets!
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: When activating 'Full HP Recovery': "Wowee, I feel all tingly!" Okaaay...
* GenkiGirl: The {{Cloudcuckoolander}} variety, cheerful in the face of extreme danger.
* NoSenseOfDirection: Invoked in her death quote.
-->'''Nancy:''' I hope I can... make it to heaven... I have no sense of direction anyhow...
* TheKlutz: Often lose her grenade for some reason. Though this works both ways, she sometimes can step on mines without setting them off.

->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII''

----

* AdaptationExpansion: Her character is expanded on in the anime, where she's Alicia's ChildhoodFriend and served alongside her in Bruhl's Town Watch.
* ApologeticAttacker: Her biography basically defines her as a mellow person, and has the (not-exactly-useful) "Humanitarian" potential to back it up. That doesn't stop her from shouting words and doing things that contradict each other while in combat, since she is yelling things indignantly while carrying out Welkin's orders under obligation by law. And FYI, also check out [[SociopathicSoldier Jane]] for her apparent mirror-reverse.
* ArtificialInsolence: Her Humanitarian potential means she will only obey your very first order to attack an enemy. For the rest of the battle, she will outright refuse your orders to attack anything and will not engage in self-defense with her squadmates.
* DelicateAndSickly: She suffers from anemia, if her DLC skirmish mission is any indication. She frightens herself unconscious after worrying about what creepy Imperials may be crawling around in the dark. She passes out ''again'' if you beat the mission with an A-rank.
-->'''Susie:''' Oh, dear... Th-the blood... rushed... to my head. ''[=[THUD]=]'' Mnngh. Ms. Medic. Ms. Mediiiiic!
* TheLoad: Kind of borders on this, thanks to her "Humanitarian" potential, which keeps her from getting the job done. That said, her potential doesn't stop her from being usable for recon or for defensive overwatch. She has her uses, but being an offensive tip of the spear isn't one of them.
* NonActionGuy: Pretty much the only female character who's decidedly ''not'' an ActionGirl. Which really doesn't help her case when there's a ''war'' going on.
* {{Ojou}}: She's a rich tycoon's daughter from a remote region, meaning she has been spoiled and treated as a princess since birth. Her high status is possibly why her ReluctantWarrior behavior is ignored by her superiors.
* OjouRinglets: Has a hairstyle to match her high birth.
* ReluctantWarrior: Does ''not'' like violence, but Universal Conscription demands she fight and gave her the training to do so. In the Edy Detachment, she's more willing to fight in order to save the lives of innocent villagers. [[GameplayAndStorySegregation No, this doesn't extend to getting rid of her Humanitarian potential stopping her from attacking.]]
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: She's from a rich family and lived a privileged life, which made her very naive when it comes to the way the world works. Her bio says she naively paid a high sum of money for a single apple as she simply doesn't know their worth.
* SpoiledSweet: She lived a life of luxury and privileged and is very spoiled and naive, yet is still a NiceGirl who treats before kindly. Even her ReluctantWarrior behavior doesn't come from cowardice, but because she simply dislikes the idea of hurting others.
* TechnicalPacifist:
-->'''Susie:''' ''[Before filling the enemy's skull with lead]'' Sorry if this hurts!\
'''Susie:''' ''[Just before grenading the enemy to bits]'' I'm a ''pacifist''!

----

* {{Keet}}: Friendly and upbeat, with more energy than he knows what to do with.
* TheNicknamer: He gives nicknames to all three of his friends. Alex is "Alex-man" and "Al-man", Nina is "Ninaruni" and "Nins", Ted is "Teddybear" and "T-Bone". Even Welkin gets "Welkster" and "Welk-man".
* PluckyComicRelief: He is very much a clown like Ted.
%%* ThoseTwoGuys: With Ted.

----

* AmbiguouslyBi: He's the only character with both the "Fancies Men" and "Fancies Women" Potentials. Also, when you heal him, regardless of whether it's a guy or a girl healing him, he says "I could just kiss you!"
* BondOneLiner: Expected of someone constantly in "performance mode":
-->'''Ted:''' I'll knock 'em dead!\
'''Ted:''' Hi, I'm Ted''.\
'''Ted:''' I guarantee this one'll slay ya''.\
'''Ted:''' Thank you. Thank youuu''.
* {{Keet}}: As an energetic comedian, and part of why he gets along so well with Melville.
* MustMakeHerLaugh: His profile mentions that he's tried time and again to make [[ColdSniper Marina]] laugh. He doesn't succeed if the EncyclopediaExposita is any indication.
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya: PlayedForLaughs. When he attacks an enemy, he'll greet them.
-->'''Ted:''' Hi! I'm Ted!
* NiceGuy: Lends moral support to the rest of the group, according to his profile.
* PluckyComicRelief: A born comedian, he assumes this role in the squad of his own accord.
* TheTease: A rare male example of this trope.
-->'''Ted:''' ''[Being healed with Ragnaid]'' I could just kiss you!
%%* ThoseTwoGuys: With Melville.

----

* AwesomeButImpractical: She's the only member of the squad to have the Chameleon ability, which is essentially an advanced version of the more common Stealth potential. Yet as nice as that sounds on paper, like Stealth, the list of scenarios in which it would be useful (i.e taking fire from an enemy that doesn't realize they're shooting at you) is rather small.
* TheFashionista: Likes to dress to impress.
-->'''Ramona:''' I'll make this look good!
* NotAMorningPerson: Described this way in her file, due to being a heavy night owl. This contributes to her firing accuracy being just as sharp on night maps.

----

* AdaptationDyeJob: His hair is black in the anime, and the lens of his goggle eyepatch is tinted grayish green as apposed to its usual pinkish red.
* {{Determinator}}:
-->'''Vyse:''' ''(Being shot at by a number of Imperial soldiers)'' WHOOEE! OUR HERO'S IN TROUBLE NOW! HA HAAA!!
* TheCameo: From ''VideoGame/SkiesOfArcadia'', along with Aika and the Medic.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: In TheAnimeOfTheGame.
* EyepatchOfPower: Granted, it has a clear part so he can see out of it, but it's no coincidence that he has an eyepatch and is one of the best Shocktroopers in the game.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: He definitely has shades of this. Just listen to him laughing and cheering as he guns down Imperials.
-->"''[[BulletDancing Dance]], punk!''"
* HeroOfAnotherStory: By virtue of being a [[TheCameo cameo]] from ''VideoGame/SkiesOfArcadia'', where he is the protagonist. His personal file hints at this.
* HotBlooded: Regards combat with eager excitement.
* NotAllowedToGrowUp: One of the modelers said when designing him, they assumed he'd be at least 24 by the events of this game, yet he seems to be stuck "17 forever."
* PartsUnknown: Her and Vyse's bio imply that they're not even from the Europan continent.
* ShipTease: With the scout Aika, just like their home series. At the end of the game they leave on a boat together never to be seen again.
* ThrillSeeker: His "Challenge Seeker" potential, which buffs his attack power when charging into enemy fire.
* WalkingTheEarth: He and Aika travel the globe in search of adventure, [[AllThereInTheManual according to the]] EncyclopediaExposita. In his ending, he and Aika leave on a boat one morning and both are never seen or heard from again.

----

* FacialMarkings: Has black eye markings in her face.
* LonersAreFreaks: Even extends to one of her potentials.
* MadBomber: She has all the hallmarks of one, be it her introduction ("heheh Ka-boom! heheh") her background and motivations for joining the milita (accidentally blew up her house, and joined so she could test out some of her creations.) or her epilogue (becomes part of the Gallian military R&D division, where her pieces of work are described as 'potent' and 'very effective' but too unstable for use by any sane soldier.)

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His excessive tinkering with his guns causes them to jam often.
* ThePerfectionist: May overlap with ObsessivelyOrganized, since his obsessions with minor details frequently leads to his downfall.
* ShrinkingViolet: Rare male example.

* MythologyGag: "Alex" was the project name for ''VideoGame/SkiesOfArcadia''. Naturally, he's friends with Vyse.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Always enthusiastic and tends to jump in feet-first, regardless of danger. After the war, he decided go with his new friends and follow their adventures in the sky.

----

* BadassAdorable: She's only 12! lisp or no, she's packing a huge MG and she'll fill you full of holes.
* ChildProdigy: She has both strong physical abilities and a highly intelligent mind while being only 12 years old. She is basically a highly prodigious ChildSoldier.
* ImprobableAge: A 12-year-old soldier, which is ''even lower'' than the already-low age of conscription in Gallia. She was only permitted to enlist because of her incredibly strong will to fight and being able to succeed all of her military training.
* LittleMissBadass: The youngest enlisted trooper ''at age 12''.
* MagikarpPower: Possibly. All her starting potentials are negative, but her unlockable one is very good, and at higher levels she has access to the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Ultimate Damage]] potential.
* SmallGirlBigGun: Aw, isn't she just the cutest little shocktrooper ever?

* BattleCouple: With Karl, like all "friendly" relationships, she gets a boost in attack power when team attacking, promoting this trope.
* DeadpanSnarker: "You're colorful as ever, Homer."
* DemotedToExtra: Unlike the other members of the Edy Detachment, she only appears in the final episode of the anime.
* LadyOfWar: She's certainly graceful and noble, and is wonderfully effective in a fight.
* OnlyOneName: Like all the Darcsen characters.
* SecretCharacter: One of five unlockable characters if certain conditions are fulfilled. To acquire Lynn, Karl's HP must hit 0 during an operation - regardless of whether Karl is rescued by a medic or not afterwards. Lynn's bio states that she enlisted when she heard her lover was in danger.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: With Karl again. Eventually, they become HappilyMarried.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Enlists just to fight with Karl.

----

* BrownNote: PlayedForLaughs. Her singing ''kills her own teammates''. It's ''THAT'' bad.
* ADayInTheLimelight: She (and her titular brigade) star in the Edy Brigade DLC for a mission.
* DreadfulMusician: Wants to be an IdolSinger, but finds out she's tone deaf; so she opts to be an actress instead.
* EpicFail: She treats her teammates to a song if you earn an A rank in her DLC mission. A large yellow '''FAIL''' appears on screen as a UnsoundEffect when she starts. It acts as a BrownNote to her teammates.
* GirlishPigtails: Used to emphasize her youth and immaturity, especially as an UnknownRival to the older Rosie.
* GreenEyedMonster: Owing to her one sided rivalry with Rosie after seeing her in action.
* IdiotHero: Edy in her DLC, which surprises the people who thought she'd be more of the AlphaBitch.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Tying a lot with being an IdiotHero. She makes rude comments about her allies, but deep down she (very obviously, in the eyes of the Edy Detachment) cares about them -- even Rosie.
* LeeroyJenkins: The entire basis of the Edy Detachment DLC is due to Edy doing just this. However, since she has the Panicky potential, [[GameplayAndStorySegregation you're not encouraged to pull this with her in actual gameplay.]]
--->'''Edy''': What?! Since when was any of this MY fault?\
'''Jann''': Maybe the part where you charged after those imps, screaming like a banshee.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: When activating her Melee Skills potential:
-->"I hope you're ready for my close-up!"
%%* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: With Homer.
* ShipTease: With Homer again. And if this is anything to go by, then it also counts as SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Edy's attitude towards Rosie. When she heard that Rosie got shot, she runs across the map to make sure she's alright.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type B, but even her deredere side can be pretty abrasive.
* UnknownRival: Edy has a one-sided rivalry with fellow GlamorousWartimeSinger Rosie, and thinks Rosie's fame is impeding her own path to stardom. Rosie has no idea about any of this.

* CaptainErsatz: Of John Rambo.
* TurnsRed: He has the Kamikaze potential, which boosts his accuracy and evasion when his HP drops to a single digit.

* DefiantToTheEnd: Upon her death.
-->"''Damn you... Imps... I'll haunt the filthy lot of ya...''"

* TheDitherer: Prevented him from his becoming his preferred class as either a Sniper or Engineer. It shows up as one of his potentials too, with his accuracy dropping when there are too many enemies in the vicinity (he's unable to pick which one to fire at).
%%* TheQuietOne
* ShrinkingViolet: Another male example. Possibly why he gets on well with Karl.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Appears to be stuck permanently in lazy-weekend-afternoon mode.
* GeniusDitz: Her personality is very much a {{Cloudcuckoolander}}, but ''all four'' of her Battle Potentials (Tank Killer, Extra Shot, Double Tank Damage, Ultimate Anti-Armor) stack together into ridiculous amounts of tank damage, making her incredibly powerful at tank-killing once they activate.
* HeirToTheDojo: Her father, a fencing instructor to nobility recommended her enlistment. She eventually follows in his footsteps.
* IdiotSavant: She's described as being able to master nearly anything, once she's built up enough steam. She eventually gets over the idiot part and her successes in the war and combat prowess sees her become a member of Cordelia's royal guard.
* MagikarpPower: At lower levels with few battle potentials, she's neither weaker nor particularly more powerful than anyone else in her class. But after leveling up, she really shines once her Slow Starter potential kicks in.
* SmallGirlBigGun: This could be said of a few of the female Lancers, but Elysse fits this the best.

* CampGay: The facts that he wears make-up and lipstick, fancies men AND has a potential called "Largo Lover" ''do not help''. There's also the way he talks... especially in the Japanese track where he uses a feminine pronoun of "I". The Edy Detachment add on gives him a Creator/PaulLynde voice to complete the look.
* FriendToAllChildren: He used to be a babysitter before enlisting in Squad 7, and he founds a kindergarten after the end of the war.
* GentleGiant: Although he's a tank-killing machine, he's a NiceGuy and has a soft spot for kids.
* HopelessSuitor: He has a huge crush on Largo, but it is unknown if Largo is aware of this.
* MachoCamp: As one of the largest, most solidly-built characters in the game, and a Lancer, he also qualifies as this. Going by the combination of his make-up and military crew-cut hairstyle, if he was actually a woman, he would be a shining example of the very stereotype of a ButchLesbian.

* FaceOfAThug: Apparently prevents his restaurant from being as sucessful as he'd hoped.
* FinaglesLaw: Seems to be a believer in this, seeing as he says "It'll probably miss" whenever he fires. Considering his class, he's usually right.
* GentleGiant: Walter looks intimidating on the battlefield, but when he's off-duty, he enjoys simpler hobbies, such as cooking.
* MoodSwinger: His confidence in battle wanes and waxes rapidly.
* MortonsFork: When at full HP, his evasion suffers due to his Cocky potential. Conversely, his defense goes down when at half HP due to his Pessimist potential. Since units heal every turn, he has to be hit both frequently and in a very specific way to be at his best (which is to say, [[ButtMonkey on the same level as everyone else]]).
* SunglassesAtNight: Has the Night Vision potential even with them on.

* BodyguardCrush: Inverted in her epilogue, see RescueRomance below.
* BrokenPedestal: Like any sensible soldier, she doesn't take too kindly to Welkin giving her orders while horribly injured.

* GlacierWaif: Invoked when she warns the opponents that she's stronger than she looks.

* NaiveNewcomer: Judging by her quote when calling for a medic, she clearly had no idea [[WarIsHell what she was getting into.]]
* NiceGal: She's quite a friendly young girl.
* SecretCharacter: And, fittingly, one of the best lancers in the game. You get her by getting 10 medals. Her bio states that she joined out of admiration of Welkin's exploits.
* RescueRomance: Gender inverted in her epilogue.
* TheScrounger: One of her potentials is "Mooch", where she "borrows" extra ammo.
* SuperStrength: She is said be able to crush a watermelon with one hand. It even comes into gameplay - eventually, Audrey can punch through armor better than anyone else in her class.

* LoveAtFirstPunch: Implied towards Edy in her DLC. Justified in that he is a masochist, though one must wonder if he winds her up deliberately just to get her to punch him.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: With Edy.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: With Edy.
* ShipTease: Again, with Edy, and the anime turned this up to eleven.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Homer really enjoys getting hurt; emphasized by one of his potentials which gives a stat boost when his health is depleted to half, complete with a face rubbing animation (and almost orgasmic voice) much like [[SociopathicSoldier Jane's when her sadist potential is activated.]] Edy even remarks on it in her DLC. "So pretty, so broken" indeed.

* CowardlyLion: He clearly doesn't want to be on the battlefield, and his Head-Lit Deer potential occasionally causes him to freeze up during an enemy counterattack. However, he also has a few potentials that make him tougher, as clearly the only thing he likes less than being on the battlefield is ''dying'' on the battlefield.

* LazyBum: To the point that he actually took up horse riding so he wouldn't have to use his legs as much, and became quite skilled at it as a result. In-game, his Moody potential makes it possible for him to just flat-out ''refuse to do anything when ordered''.
** He's so lazy that he doesn't even particularly care if he ''dies''.

* BetterWithNonHumanCompany: She's a recluse to the point that her stats improve when she isn't around others, but she's got a soft spot for animals.
* ColdSniper: The only one bearing the potential [[ImprobableAimingSkills "Ultimate Accuracy"]]. Ultimately subverted if you purchase the add-on content: her potentials imply she is a sociopath, but the Edy's Brigade reveals that she has a soft side. Apparently she just doesn't like being around other people.
* CutenessProximity: In the downloadable side-mission "Edy's Detachment", Marina is revealed to have a thing for cute animals.
* EmotionlessGirl: So much that even Ted, the squad's joker, never succeeds in inciting a laugh out of her. {{Downplayed}} overall, as seen in the Edy Detachment -- she keeps to herself, but is just as resolute in fighting the good fight as the others, and pipes in her agreement with their plans.
* IdiotHair: Yes, [[ColdSniper but it doesn't extend to her personality]].
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: Of all people. She bears some responsibility for getting the detachment lost in Edy's DLC for ''running after a cute looking puppy''.[[note]]In the anime, she's the one who adopts Hans after the war instead of Welkin and Alicia.[[/note]]

* FightingIrish: Given the surname and ''attempted'' accent, probably what the developers were going for.
* FriendlySniper: She holds the bond of friendship with her comrades above all else.
* NiceGal: She's very polite and mild-mannered.
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Her accent keeps changing between Scottish, Irish and [[{{Scotireland}} a sort-of vague "Celtic"]].

-->'''Emile:''' I've been through worse than this!
%%* FriendlySniper
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: His in-game quotes suggest he thinks of himself as TheLoad, but his Critical Shot and Ammo Refill potentials make him one of the best Snipers next to Marina, and his base-stats range from excellent to decent. His Meadow Bred and Roof Hunter potentials stand in stark contrast to Marina's Pollen Allergy and Nest Master as well, allowing him to occasionally take on jobs she may not be the best suited for.
* HiddenDepths: He goes on the become one of the most respected painters in Gallia.
* IRegretNothing: If he falls in battle, he will say that he is glad to die in battle rather than in a sickbed.
* SecretCharacter: One of five unlockable characters if certain conditions are fulfilled. To acquire Emile, Oscar's HP must hit 0 during an operation - regardless of whether Oscar is rescued by a medic or not afterwards. Emile's bio states that he enlists when he hears his brother is a casualty despite his own failing health.
* SiblingTeam: With Oscar.

* DirtyCoward: Became a sniper so that he could stay as far away from the fighting as possible, and is all too pleased whenever he is excluded from the squad roster.
* FantasticRacism: Unlike other characters who has the Darcsen Hater potential, he has no real explanation about being a racist to Darcsens.
-->Ugh...just so...oily.
* ItsAllAboutMe: His defining trait. He becomes a sniper to stay safely away and is more than happy to leave your service in the command room, in sharp contrast to everyone else who range from being sad at dismissal or prepared to rejoin at any time.
* InsufferableGenius: Specializes at counter-sniping and is a good contender for the title of the second-best sniper in Squad 7 (after, of course, [[InfinityPlusOneSword fully-levelled Marina]]). He's also selfish, obnoxious and cruel.
* {{Jerkass}}: Gradually switches to JerkWithAHeartOfGold in the manga.
* KilledMidSentence: If he gets taken out in combat, he passes out before he can blame Welkin for it.
-->Welkin, this is your...
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: In his epilogue. On the plus side, it meant he forgot he was such a Jerkass.
* MeaningfulName: "Regard" is french for "glance", and shares a root with the french words for "watching" and "looking"; fitting for a sniper.
* RaiseHimRightThisTime: His epilogue will probably lead to this.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Amazingly, he's a Sniper with a fear of heights. His accuracy suffers if he's anywhere close to a ladder that leads downwards, whether that be at the top of a tower or at ground level near deep trenches.

* NoNameGiven: Subverted. But you'll have to get every class to lv 20 and then check his personnel profile to see it.
* PunctuatedForEmphasis: "Congratulations [class name], as of today YOU! ARE! ELITES!"
* RedBaron: Was known as "Hot Rod" during EW 1.
* RousingSpeech: Gives one once every class reaches lv 20.
* TheReveal: His name (see above), and that he fought as a Lancer in [=EW1=].

A retired [=EW1=] veteran who frequents the War Cemetery. Teaches Welkin orders in exchange for experience points.

----

* AllThereInTheScript: The official artbook gives his name as Roald Kankkunen, an EWI cavalry general who relinquished his command to Welkin's father after recognizing the latter's talent.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Judging by his speech before teaching it, he seems to consider "Recon Request" this. To most players though, it's probably [[GameBreaker Awaken All]].
* NoNameGiven: Once it's revealed that he once worked with Welkin's father, his bio states that he bears a similarity to a famed officer, though it doesn't outright confirm that this is his true identity.
* PermanentlyMissableContent: Subverted; if you turn down one of his orders, he will offer it again but much later on, leading some players to think they've fallen victim to this trope.
* TheUnreveal: You never find out exactly who he is in the game proper, only that he fought alongside Welkin's father in the first war.

Commanding officer of Regiment 3, hence making her Squad 7's superior officer. Elle (as she's known to Largo) is a wise, concerned leader for her troops, and she specifically has a fondness for Squad 7, both for their bravery and service and for the fact that Largo is one of the members. She never unnecessarily puts Squad 7 in harm's way, and trusts them to perform any mission to success. She also tends to turn a blind eye to some of Welkin's most outrageous strategies, since, well, they work.

----

* BetaCouple: She eventually marries Largo after the war.
* CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough: The Smooth to Largo's Rough.
* ColdSniper: Served as one in the first war before earning the rank of Captain.
%%* TheGoodCaptain
* HotLibrarian: Captain Varrot's totally rockin' the look. It helps that she also has an office full of books, and that a local bookshop actually owes its livelihood to her.
* IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim: Takes this attitude towards Geld after encouragement from Largo. Well actually, it's more like If You Kill Him You Will Be Betraying Your Dead Lover's Ideals.
* ItsPersonal: She resents Geld for torturing her friend Frederick to death during the First Europan War.
* NotSoStoic: In the side chapter dealing with Giorgios Geld.
* OldSoldier: She has served in the Gallian militia for several years and took part in the First European War.

* {{Revenge}}: The reason she stayed in the army after the First European War. [[spoiler:She almost lost it when she met Geld until Largo talked her down]].

A longtime friend of Welkin's, and commander of Squad 7's sister unit, Squad 1. Faldio, like Welkin, was drafted as an officer, and is an avid historian. He is one of the lead researchers on Valkyrian lore and technology for the Gallian Army.

----

* ActionFashionista: He attempted this at one point, making clear his disdain for the Gallian uniform. His redesign proposal was rejected on the grounds of being "[[BlingOfWar impossibly florid]]."
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: In the anime he develops feelings for Alicia, who has eyes for Welkin.
%%* AntiHero
* BadassBookworm: Shares this quality with Welkin, which is understandable given their shared military/college education.
* HeroicSacrifice: At the end of the game, [[spoiler:Faldio takes Maximilian with him to destroy the Marmota and repent for him wounding Alicia]].
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Essentially Faldio's initial role.
* HopelessSuitor: His feelings for Alicia basically amounted to this. Apart from her being in love with Welkin, she wasn’t fond of Faldio to begin with.
* HonorBeforeReason: Maximilian would have made a valuable prisoner of war, see RedemptionEqualsDeath.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Considered [[spoiler:shooting Alicia]] necessary to save Gallia, though later comes to regret that decision.
* LoveTriangle: In the anime he has feelings for Alicia, who has feelings for Welkin.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Sacrifices himself while killing Maximilian in penance for [[spoiler:wounding Alicia]].
* ShipperOnDeck: Oddly, despite the fact Faldio falls for Alicia in the anime, he also seems to be working his ass off to convince Welkin to hook up with her, though, as a flashback reveals, he was there when Welkin could have married one of the most sought after women in college and let her get away, so it's fair to say most of his attraction, while possibly genuine, is also possibly an attempt to get a rise out of Welkin (thus revealing Welkin has a sex drive) and get him to realize there's an attractive young lady and he would make a cute couple with her. In fact, he more or less practically screams that in Welkin's face in Episode 11.
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:He pulls this on Maximilian at the end of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' to destroy the Marmota]].

IntrepidReporter extraordinaire. She starts off interviewing the members of the militia to bring the news to the public, but eventually settles on covering Squad 7 exclusively, not only for their news-worthiness but also because she thinks they're good people. She also, against government orders, publishes ''The Writing On The Wall'', a clandestine paper to report the news of the war without censorship, letting the Gallian citizens know exactly what's going on. [[spoiler:She is eventually revealed to be Irene Koller, the narrator for the game and author of the book that tells Squad 7's exploits.]]

----

* NarratorAllAlong: It takes us a while to learn that [[spoiler:Ellet]] is her maiden name and that her full name is [[spoiler:Irene Koller]], and it explains how side-chapters are annexed into the book that serves as your main menu.
* SecretKeeper: A NewGamePlus sidestory reveals that [[spoiler: she discovered Princess Cordelia's Darcsen heritage sometime between the Marberry Shore battle and the reclamation of Bruhl, but decides not to publish it, claiming she doesn't have any solid proof to show for it.]] She also decides not to write anything about Welkin and Alicia's relationship in her Writing On The Wall segments out of respect for the two of them.
* TagalongReporter: She decides to become Squad 7's embedded journalist after deciding that they're the most interesting of the Gallian military. [[spoiler:She eventually writes a book about them.]]

A Gallian aristocrat and overall commander of the Gallian military. He was recommended to the post by the Gallian prime minister Borg, in spite of being completely unsuitable for the job.

----

* AristocratsAreEvil: He's a nobleman with evil ambitions.
* ArmchairMilitary: He only ever participates in fights (in Selvaria's DLC) in a comfy tank that is an optional target. Otherwise, he's happy to insist WeHaveReserves, encouraging soldiers to just fight better, and taking credit when they do.
* AssholeVictim: Was among those incinerated by [[spoiler:Selvaria's Final Flame after an entire game of jerkassery.]]
* BlingOfWar: Despite not really earning any of it.
* CharacterDeath: He dies when [[spoiler:Selvaria uses her Final Flame on him]].
* EveryoneHasStandards: In spite of his condescending attitude towards the militia, he's quite shocked when he discovers the Federation's plot to kidnap Princess Cordelia
* FatBastard: The fattest character in the game, and a big {{Jerkass}}.
* GeneralFailure: He often forced the Gallian army to perform actions that will obviously only end up in defeat. In Selvaria's episode, it is obvious that while he is willing to engage in war crimes by using chemical weapons, he is such a horrible strategist that Ghirlandaio fell to the Empire very easily.
* GloryHound: Damon is more worried about his reputation and victory than the welfare of his troops, especially the militia. Most of the missions he issues to the militia are practically suicidal, and would invariably rack up huge body counts if not for the fact that they are far more capable than he gives them credit for.
* {{Jerkass}}: He gives zero respect to Varrot and the militia because he is born as an aristocrat.
* KickTheDog:
** In the original game, one moment really stood out in the Behind Her Blue Flame DLC missions. In the second mission, after pulling out of Ghirlandaio, Damon planted gas traps (that were outlawed) outside and gassed Selvaria into a crippled state. [[EvenEvilHasStandards The Imperials are quite shocked by this development.]] After losing completely, he decides to report that they were forced to retreat because the ''Imperials'' used the gas.
** He's also pretty abusive to Selvaria after you defeat her.
** In the anime version, he throws a tantrum after seeing Isara's Darcsen-print poncho draped over the Edelweiss. [[spoiler:She died in the previous episode]].
* TheNeidermeyer: If it weren't for actual competent officers like Captain Varrot and Lieutenant Gunther, Gallia would be doomed.
* {{Nepotism}}: His rapid rise to the rank of General and overall command of the Gallian army stems from his being the grandson of a more competent General who fought in the First Europan War and his political connections to Prime Minister Borg.
* PowerfulButIncompetent: He's only powerful in the sense that he has a load of political connections, but he has done nothing to deserve his rank. In fact, he's one of the big reasons why Gallia nearly ''loses'' the war against the Empire.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Commits a war crime at the very start of the war (in the Behind Her Blue Flame DLC missions) by using gas traps, which are outlawed by international treaties, and openly states that he doesn't give a damn about them. When it fails, he claims the ''Imperials'' were the ones to use the gas, and no one refutes him because of his political power.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He firmly believe the regular army kicks ass and he's a great commander when the only reason he's in command at all is thanks to having friends in high places.
* StayInTheKitchen: His ideas about the proper place of women would get him repeatedly shot by any random feminist. He's even this way to ''Varrot'', who is far more competent than him even on her worst day while sleep-deprived and drunk.
* UriahGambit: Tries to pull this on Squad 7 (specifically on Welkin) in the anime by sending the militia to take Fouzen without any support from the regular army, all just so he can get Welkin killed because he foiled Princess Cordelia's kidnapping by Federation agents. It doesn't work, as Welkin avoids a frontal assault and sneaks his squad into Fouzen instead.
* WeHaveReserves: His tactics apparently consist of nothing but human wave attacks, and the militia is always the ones spearheading his attacks.

!! Princess Cordelia gi Randgriz

The heiress of the Randgriz family and figurehead of Gallia.

----

* DistressedDamsel: [[spoiler:Locked up behind bars for seventy days, when Randgriz was taken by the Rebels]].
* GuiltComplex: [[spoiler: Her guilt over the fact that her royal position exists because her ancestors sold out the rest of her kind haunted her to the point that she withdrew from any real responsibility and let others make decisions for her, until Welkin inspired her to become more proactive.]]
* LateArrivalSpoiler: The premise of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesII'' revolves around the massive fallout revolving around Cordelia's confession of her (and consequently that of the entire House of Randgriz) Darcsen lineage, months after barely fending off the Empire.
* PuppetKing: Like a lot of young rulers, she's mostly there to rubber-stamp policy set by her regent, Prime Minister Borg. Her encounter with Squad 7 leads her to become more active.
* PrincessesRule: The official reason for her remaining a princess despite the death of her parents is that she's too young to become queen. However, [[EvilChancellor Borg's]] scheming for the throne may have something to do with it as well.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething:
** She turns up for the attack on the Marmota, and acts as an NPC medic after saying that she wants to help in any way she can. Every two or three turns she fully heals every squad member, ''including the tanks''.
** She insists on personally reaching out to war victims, rather than hide in the safety of her palace in ''Valkyria Chronicles II''.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:After surviving prison time in ''Valkyria Chronicles II'', Cordelia personally leads the Gallian Navy's blockade against Baldren's forces to the point that she helps Class G pull Avan and Zeri from the sinking Dandarius.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Cinnamon bread. She gave one to Class G after successfully escorting her APC, and one skit even shows her sneaking into a town to buy some.

* AristocratsAreEvil: While seemingly the leader of Gallia, his plans [[spoiler:really aren't for Gallia's good. He has plans to sell Gallia out.]]
* CharacterDeath: He is executed on [[spoiler:Maximilian]]'s orders.
* DirtyCoward: [[spoiler:He is happy to sell out Gallia to the Federation, and later the Empire just so that he could rule without having a war.]]
* EvilChancellor: [[spoiler: Is secretly scheming to take control of Gallia for himself, and is happy to conspire with both the Federation and Empire to make it happen.]]

->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII''

Imperial prince and leader of the Imperial invasion of Gallia. Proud and arrogant, he goes into battle with absolute certainty of victory, relying on immense war-machines and the superior technology of the Empire. He and his closest generals make up the ''Triumvirate''. He personally commands a super-heavy tank called the ''Batomys''.

He rescued Selvaria from the Imperial Valkyria Research Facility, using her as one of his foremost assets in the war. Though she serves him out of love, he sees her as little more than a tool for his conquest, and is more than happy to take advantage of her affections for him to make her do his bidding.

[[spoiler: Secretly hates the Empire after his mother died in an attempt on his life by the hand of his royal siblings. His invasion of Gallia is to acquire Valkyrian artifacts allowing him to claim power back home.]]

----
* TwentyFourHourArmor: In the game he's never seen without his gaudy suit of armor. In the anime, he more often foregoes it outside of special ocasion.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Is progressively much more unhinged and maniacal in the anime adaptation as the war effort in Gallia sours, with his [[EvenEvilHasStandards displays of standards]] largely adapted out to [[SanitySlippage visibly emphasize]] his [[VillainousBreakdown mounting]] megalomania in the face of pressure from the Empire for his failures. His DomesticAbuse and psychological manipulation of Selvaria is also even more blatant than it was in the game (and worse, was all but stated to be a case of WifeHusbandry).
* AndNowYouMustMarryMe: [[spoiler: To Princess Cordelia]].
* BadSamaritan: Rescued Selvaria from an Imperial research facility where she was being abused by the scientists running it and made her live in his estate with all the luxuries it entailed. However, he only did so because he saw her as a living weapon for his conquests. And even went so far as to pretend to love her to make use of her more effectively. [[spoiler: To make matters worse, he was one of the biggest sponsors of said research facility - meaning she was not rescued, but bought, and he was directly responsible for her misery to begin with]]. The AnimeOfTheGame combines this with WifeHusbandry by making Selvaria barely 13 when this took place.
* BerserkButton: Do not break war protocol in his presence. An Imperial officer states Geld's war crimes "roused a fire" in Maximillian, implying the perpetually stoic prince actually became furious.
* BigBad: He serves as the main antagonist of the game even though he is only one of the Empire's Princes.
** The anime adaptation shows that his father, the Emperor, and his older brother, the actual heir to the throne, are the ones pulling most of the strings in the Empire.
* BaitTheDog: When Maximilian is first introduced, there is still room for doubt that he might have some degree of affection for Selvaria but doesn't show it overtly. However, their conversation before the Battle of Naggiar is littered with enough red flags to clue the players into his true intentions. [[spoiler: His ordering Selvaria to use her Final Flame after her defeat is the point where the players truly realise, yes, he ''really is'' a ManipulativeBastard.]]
* BladeEnthusiast: Maximilian is said to be one in his background info; justified in that at the time it was for self-defense, but it eventually grows to him having a collection of hundreds, if not thousands, of knives.
* BlingOfWar: Has a gaudy gold-and-white uniform/suit of armor that he's never seen without. In the final chapter we find it has an equally gaudy helmet, complete with a romanesque fringe and long trail of red hair.
* DomesticAbuse: His treatment towards Selvaria can be interpreted as this. He uses psychological and emotional manipulation of her love for him to get her to take part in his schemes and withholds affection if she fails any task given to her. It's also the one thing that keeps him from being an AntiVillain and makes him hatable in spite of his honourable nature.
** The anime takes his abuse even further by adding more blatant instances. He destroys the Barious temple in front of her and gloats about it. He pretends to be unaware of an attempt on his life by his father and half-brother and orders her to stay alone. Then, when she disobeys his orders to save his life, he doesn't even acknowledge her presence. And he makes her stand guard behind him while having meals, while Gregor and Jaeger are allowed to eat alongside him. And to top it off, he took her under his wing when she was ''[[WifeHusbandry barely thirteen years old.]]''
* DullSurprise: All he mutters is a "Really...", complete with a straight face, in response to Cordelia revealing herself to be a Darcsen.
* {{Ephebophile}}: He is 29 but is willing to marry [[spoiler: the 16 year old Princess Cordelia]] to conquer Gallia. In the anime, he took Selvaria under his wing when she was barely 13 years old and started [[WifeHusbandry grooming her]] to be a tool for his conquests since.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Maximilian is very strict on respecting the rules of warfare, and orders Geld to be court-martialed and executed for his atrocities. [[spoiler:He also dislikes sellouts to their own country, and expects loyalty in his subordinates. In which, even when Borg contributes greatly in his invasion to Gallia and wished to join him, Maximilian instead asks him if he'll eventually stab him in the back for personal gain, then sends him to death.]]
* EqualOpportunityEvil: Maximilian allows anyone to join his forces, whether they be women, former enemies of the Empire, or Darcsens. [[spoiler:Which explains why he has no problem of marrying Princess Cordelia after the truth about her heritage is revealed. Except if [[EvenEvilHasStandards they're sellouts to their own country]], [[RewardedAsATraitorDeserves in which case he'll just execute them on the spot]].]]
* EvilBrit: Maximilian has a British accent in the English dub.
* FalseFriend: He straight up reveals he was this to Selvaria all along when he [[spoiler: orders her to use her Final Flame]].
* FinalBoss: He's the last boss that Squad 7 encounters at the end of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''.
* FreudianExcuse: Maximilian's ambition to conquer Europa was fueled by [[spoiler:his low standing at the Imperial court due to his mother being of common birth, and him surviving an assassination attempt from within his family early in life]].
* IntentionalHeartbreaker: Makes Selvaria believe that she can earn his love by performing her role to her utmost ability and then coldly [[spoiler: orders her to become a suicide bomber]] when he feels she's no longer of use to him.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Maximilian has a severe LackOfEmpathy towards everyone.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: He only saved Selvaria from being a lab rat because he could make use of her abilities.
* LastVillainStand: [[spoiler: His FinalBoss battle. The Valkof, the whole reason he invaded Gallia to begin with, is destroyed, the Marmota, while still operational, is severely damaged, and Faldio is off setting it to self-destruct, and while Maxmillian still has his artificial Valkyria setup, it only works as long as he's on the Marmota. Him showing up to kill Squad 7 is really just a last desperate bid to regain control of the situation.]]
* LightIsNotGood: Blonde hair and a white [[ErmineCapeEffect Ermine Cape]] with gold embroidery do nothing to disguise his ruthlessness.
* ManipulativeBastard: In spades, given that his modus operandi with regards to his subordinates is observe them until he figures out their motives and greatest insecurities, then exploit said information for his own personal gain. Though Selvaria is the most egregious case of this, he also uses similar tactics with Jaeger - who only fights for him on the condition that his homeland will get independence after the war is won.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Does this to Selvaria regularly to motivate her to do his bidding. He withholds affection from her and patronizes her if she fails in her endeavors, and gives her affection only if she succeeds.
* MissingMom: His FreudianExcuse.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In the anime, [[VillainsOutShopping it's shown he genuinely enjoys poker in his downtime with his fellow generals.]]
* OhCrap: Gets this reaction when he realizes that [[spoiler:Alicia is about to use her Valkyria powers to destroy the Marmota]] and when [[spoiler:Faldio takes the Marmota down with him]].
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:He gains Valkyria-like powers in the final battle, thanks to a mighty device created by his engineers.]]
* OverlyLongName: Maximilian Gaius von Reginrave.
* ParentalAbandonment: His mother was murdered by jealous conspirators.
* PatrioticFervor: He takes pride in his Europan heritage, dislikes anyone who doesn't have loyalty to their own country, especially anyone who dares backstab their own nation for personal benefits. This is also PlayedWith, he uses the RoyalWe, he thought that he's embodying the whole nation, giving shades of ItsAllAboutMe.
* PoliticallyCorrectVillain: Mostly played straight aside from his DomesticAbuse towards Selvaria. For the time period the story is based on, Maximillian isn't a bigot or sexist unlike most in the Empire or even in Gallia. As he mostly values people based on their usefulness to his ambitions, he will gladly employ women and even Darscens into his fold if it benefits him. And as for Selvaria, while his behaviour towards her is akin to that of a chauvinistic abusive boyfriend, he only treats her that way because she is in love with him, not because she is a woman.
* PunchClockVillain: Very much so, despite being a cold, abusive {{Jerkass}}. Maximilian is simply obligated to win the war for his country and gracefully respects the moral standards of warfare. Averted [[AdaptationalVillainy in the anime]], where he is a crazy megalomaniac.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Not only does he kick ass with the Batomys, but in the anime he is shown to be capable of wiping out the assassin squad sent to kill him that already made short work of his royal guards.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Isn't a bigot and believes Princess Cordelia's about [[spoiler: the real history between the Darcsens and the Valkyrur,]] nor does he have any problem with her real heritage. He's still a villain, however.
* RoyalWe: Fairly subdued for most of the game, but Maximilian talks like this almost nonstop during the final chapters of the story. We, Us, Ours; he uses them all. He does sometimes speak without it, however.
* SanitySlippage: In the anime, he undergoes a severe case of this after Cordelia reveals her heritage in contrast to the game. Afterward, he gains a noticeable HairTriggerTemper and begins violently harming anybody who calls him out on his attitude. When Alicia does so, he slaps her hard enough to send her flying. When Johann and Radi do it, [[spoiler: he shoots them both in cold blood.]]
* TroubledAbuser: His cold and manipulative treatment towards Selvaria stems from his severe LackOfEmpathy from his horrible upbringing.
* VisualPun: The armor he wears can be associated with the "Maximilian" style of armor.
* WarriorPrince: Let it not be said that Maximilian is not willing to lead his troops. He is an incredibly accomplished tactician and highly skilled fighter on his own.
* WineIsClassy: Befitting a royal prince, he is always seen sipping fine wine when dining or lounging in the anime and in cutscenes from the third game.
* WifeHusbandry: Heavily implied to have done this to Selvaria in the anime. As there is a ten year age gap between them and she was in her very early teens when he took her under his wing. He also even named her himself.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler: Orders Selvaria to be a suicide bomber after she is defeated at Naggiar.]]

!! Brigadier General Selvaria Bles
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_selvaria_bles.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SayakaOhara (Japanese) and Creator/AprilStewart (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles4''

A member of the ''Triumvirate'' and a general of the Empire's Central Forces. The blood of the Valkyrur runs in Selvaria's veins. Their blood gives her incredible powers, making her the deadliest soldier in the Empire's employ. Rather than being devoted to the Empire or its cause, she fights exclusively out of love for Maximilian. Even so, she is not without honor, and is genuinely concerned with the welfare of her soldiers.

----

* AMotherToHerMen: She does show quite a lot of care to her subordinates. Her one request to General Damon after being captured at Ghirlandaio was to spare the lives of her soldiers captured there, and you get to see a lot of interaction between her and her subordinates in ''Behind Her Blue Flame''.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Does this twice. Maxmillian manipulates her into giving one of these just before the battle of Naggiar to motivate her to fight for him. The second time, she does this after losing, begging him to give her another chance.
* AntiVillain: Selvaria fights in the war for a megalomaniac because she is in love with him, not because she necessarily agrees with all of his views.
* {{BFG}}: Her custom gun, the Ruhm, which is basically a heavy machine gun with range far better than most rifles. Only a Valkyria like Selvaria could hope to use it.
* BadassInDistress: During her DLC mission she gets caught in a gas trap set by General Damon. It's up to Johann to get to her and cure her poison before the Gallian army takes her prisoner or kills her.
* BodyguardCrush: If she's not serving as a general, she's being Maximilian's personal bodyguard, which she's happy to do due to her romantic feelings towards him, though they are one-sided.
* BodyguardingABadass She's often working as Maximilian personal bodyguard, but while's he's no OneManArmy he's still more than capable of defending himself. At one point, he's seen walking casually through some ruins currently situated within a warzone, and treats a group of Gallian officers threatening to shoot him with barely a pretense of interest. Fortunately, this intimidates them enough that he doesn't even need to ask Selvaria to turn them all into paste to prove his point and in the anime he kills an entire group of assassins sent to take him by himself with ease.
* BreakoutCharacter: She's essentially the face of the franchise, appearing in some capacity in every entry and canonically in most of them.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has a pretty large bust, which is often [[MaleGaze emphasized by the camera]] or noted by characters InUniverse.
* ClimaxBoss: The final boss fight with her marks the beginning of the endgame.
* CoDragons: Forms the Drei Stern alongside Gregor and Jaeger.
* DarkActionGirl: Selvaria's the strongest force of nature in the entire game [[spoiler: until Alicia awakens to her power, that is]], and she's on the side of the bad guys.
* DarkMagicalGirl: Her abilities are often equated by magic, which leads to her own allies calling her a "Valkyria Witch".
* ADayInTheLimelight: ''Behind Her Blue Flame''
* DespairEventHorizon: Crosses this after [[spoiler: Maxmillian orders her to use the Final Flame]].
* DiskOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler: It initially seems like she's the FinalBoss of the game, what with the mission you fight her in being the final push to completely oust the Imperial forces from Gallia. Then she wipes out nearly the entire Regular Army with her Final Flame and things go FromBadToWorse.]]
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:She sacrifices herself with the Final Flame as a final farewell to Maximilian]].
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Even without her Valkyria power, she is already an OneManArmy. With Valkyria power, she can wipe out the whole army easily.
* {{Expy}}: The similarities, both visual and otherwise, to [[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs Reinforce I]] are so many that it leaves one wondering if Selvaria is this or an outright CaptainErsatz.
* FatalFlaw: Her single-minded devotion and dedication towards a manipulative, abusive {{Jerkass}} ultimately becomes her undoing.
* FourStarBadass: Holds the rank of Brigadier General and is a powerful fighter in her own right.
* FreakinessShame: Everyone is terrified of her because of her Valkyria powers, even the men under her own command, something she's self-conscious about.
* FrontlineGeneral: She actively takes part in battles alongside her troops.
* HiddenDepths: She apparently enjoys cooking in her spare time. It is implied that she's [[LethalChef not very good at it]].
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: She thought Maximilian was a PrinceCharming... unfortunately he was anything but. The anime explains this by stating she was a child when he rescued her from the facility.
* IgnoredEnamoredUnderling: A very straight and very tragic example. Maxmillian's continued emotional manipulation made her feel that she had to perform her role as his general to her utmost ability in order to earn his love [[spoiler: and said devotion is rewarded with being ordered to die]].
* IOweYouMyLife: Her devotion towards Maximilian comes from the fact he rescued her from her life as a lab rat. [[spoiler: However it is revealed that his father, the emperor, was sponsoring the research facility responsible for experimenting on Valkyria, and that Maximilian did not rescue, but ''bought'' her from the facility. Meaning that he invoked this trope in order to make her loyal. Which, considering [[WifeHusbandry her age]] when this happened, did not require much convincing.]]
* ISurrenderSuckers: Rather than fight until the death, Selvaria surrenders after being beaten at Ghirlandaio and requests Squad 7 to escort her surviving men away as prisoners of war. Once she's reasonably certain that her men are far enough away and nearly the entire Gallian army is inside or around the fortress, she uses her Final Flame to kill nearly the entire Gallian army.
* LineOfSightName: As a lab rat she had no name, so Maximilian named her after a flower growing in the research facility garden.
* LoveMartyr: PlayedWith. While she holds no illusion of redeeming Maximilian, she does believe that she can win his love if she performs her role as his general to her utmost ability... an idea that ''he'' put in her head through repeated emotional manipulation.
* LovingAShadow: Selvaria only fell in love with Maximilian because she believed him to be an honourable and benevolent prince, and was under the impression that he saved her from being a lab rat. And considering that he is very adept at playing the part of a Prince Charming when the need arises, it's most likely she never figured out his true nature until [[spoiler: he ordered her to use her Final Flame]]. The anime also states that she was taken under Maximilian's wing when she was only thirteen, and thus, was blind to his villainy because of her age.
* MoreDakka: The Ruhm, her personal machinegun. It can shred infantry to pieces in seconds from all the way across the map, and can even deal ScratchDamage to the Edelweiss and Shamrock if it hits their radiators.
* MsFanservice: She's a tall and attractive woman, with the [[MaleGaze camera]] often giving emphasis on her figure, especially her large bust. And while her uniform isn't revealing at the front, it [[SexyBacklessOutfit leaves her back exposed]] seemingly for no reason other than to show off some skin. In the anime, she gets to wear many more outfits, such as fancy dresses and swimwear and even gets a ShowerScene with GodivaHair and {{Sideboob}}.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Her long silver hair is the most obvious physical trait of her [[PreCursors Valkyria descent]]. While not all Valkyrias have silver hair, nobody but Valkyrias are shown to have them.
* NotSoStoic: Is reduced to a simpering emotional wreck around Maximilian, being prone to TenderTears in response to even the smallest gestures of affection or criticism. So naturally when he [[spoiler: orders her to become a suicide bomber]], she reacts to this by straight up ''bawling.''
* OneManArmy: Even when not in her Valkyria form, she is still a very tough opponent that can take out ''tanks''' on her own.
* OpenSecret: Though she tries to put on a facade of being a cold, ruthless military commander who is solely committed to the Empire's cause, GenreSavvy players can pick up on Selvaria's true motives as early as her introduction. As for InUniverse, while those in Selvaria's service are unaware of her weakness for Maximilian or of his true nature, Gregor and Jaeger are. And in the anime, the latter repeatedly alludes at this with backhanded remarks.
* OverrankedSoldier: She holds the rank of Brigadier General despite being just 22 years old.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: In her Valkyria form, she is easily capable of destroying entire armies. [[spoiler:And that is not even taking her [[FantasticNuke Final Flame]] into account...]]
* PetTheDog: Her strict but caring attitude towards her soldiers.
* PrecociousCrush: In the anime, her feelings for Maximilian become this, as she was in her very early teens when she was taken from the facility.
* RaisedInALab: Selvaria was raised in a laboratory because of her [[PreCursors Valkyria blood]]. Emperor Maximillian personally rescued her from spending her entire life there, earning her UndyingLoyalty.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Unlike other boss characters who fight you using their AceCustom tanks, she fights you on foot each time.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: She has blood-red eyes, to illustrate her nature as a PersonOfMassDestruction. Notably the eyes of other Valkyrias tend to glow red when they activate their powers, but Selvaria is unique in that her eyes seem naturally red.
* SleepsInTheNude: Selvaria is revealed to sleep like this when she's seen waking up naked in her bed in the "Selvaria's Wonderful Day Off!" OVA (CensorShadow is used to preserve her modesty as she sits up). Given her wardrobe has [[LimitedWardrobe nothing but the same military outfit she always wears]], this is used to illustrate how she [[MarriedToTheJob cares for nothing other than her military life]], as she doesn't even own casual clothes, much less any kind of sleepwear.
* SmallGirlBigGun: She's not exactly ''small'', per se, but come on, the Ruhm makes ''anyone'' look tiny by comparison.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: In the anime, she is very visibly blushing after Maximilian names her - making this the moment when she developed feelings for him.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Her Japanese spelling was actually more like 'Selv'''e'''ria'.
* StatuesqueStunner: She stands at 175 cm (5'8") and towers over Alicia.
* TakingYouWithMe: Her Final Flame [[spoiler:allows her to detonate in an explosion reminiscent of a nuclear bomb (complete with a mushroom cloud)]]. She uses this [[spoiler:once captured to take out Damon and the entire Gallian army.]]
* {{Tykebomb}}: When she was young, she was forcibly separated from her parents, experimented upon, and turned into a PersonOfMassDestruction.
* VillainsDyingGrace: Selvaria "begs" Damon to have the Squad 7 Militia escort her personal troops as [=POWs=] out of Ghirlandaio. [[spoiler:This saves them (and her men) from her [[SuicideAttack Final Flame.]] ]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: Her and Jaeger in the anime, since the latter got a case of AdaptationalJerkass. While they do work together professionally, Jaeger often makes stealth remarks at Selvaria whenever her feelings for Maximilian manifest themselves. This causes her to develop an abrasive attitude towards him in turn. However, it's clear Jaeger is doing this in order to [[ToughLove make her realise]] that Maximilian is an abuser and doesn't truly love her.
* WeakButSkilled: Only in comparison to her fellow Valkyria. She has neither the natural talent of [[spoiler: Alicia]] nor the raw power of Crymaria, but makes up for it with unmatched control over her Valkyria abilities.
* WillfullyWeak: [[spoiler: After being defeated in a Valkyria duel and ordered to use her Final Flame, she first challenges Squad 7 to take her down without her Valkyria powers. It turns out that without her powers [[BroughtDownToBadass she merely goes from "completely invincible grim reaper to be avoided at all cost" to "extremely hard to take down and shreds any non-tank unit within her line of sight in seconds."]]]]
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:She views Valkyria Alicia as this after dueling with her]].
* YouAreNumberSix: In the anime, the name given to her by the scientists in the research facility was A1.

!! Major General Radi Jaeger
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_radi_jaeger.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkioOtsuka (Japanese), Creator/PatrickSeitz (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII''

General of the Empires Southern Forces. A former general of the kingdom of Fhirald, which was annexed by the Empire during EWI. He fights for Maximilian in order to secure his homeland's independence, serving as a member the ''Triumviri''. Commands a tank-destroyer called the ''Lupus''.

----
* AceCustom: His special Lupus tank in both encounters is a unique Imperial model, and it looks pretty awesome to boot.
* AccompliceByInaction: In the game, he is a sympathetic and tragic case. Even though he knew that Maximilian was abusing and manipulating Selvaria for his own ends, he couldn't warn her or intervene on her behalf because Maximilian is his boss. [[spoiler: He ''finally'' decides to speak up when he finds out she has been ordered to use her Final Flame, but by that point, it is too little too late.]] His anime incarnation however is much less sympathetic as makes repeated snide comments towards Selvaria while positing himself as wanting to help her.
* AdaptationalJerkass: In the game, he is a mute spectator to Selvaria's situation and wants to help her though he is powerless to do so. In the anime, while his disdain for Maximilian's abuse and desire to help Selvaria is still present, he also repeatedly mocks the latter's love for the former with [[StealthInsult Stealth Insults]] and snarky remarks.
* AdaptationalHeroism: In a zigzagging case, he is much more openly disapproving of Maximillian's escalating sociopathy in the anime. On the other hand, he remains in the Gallian invasion quite longer than in the game, up until where the final battle would have taken place in the game. At the end, after witnessing one too many of Maximillian's MoralEventHorizon firsthand, he openly confronts his boss with almost fatal consequences before pulling a ScrewThisImOuttaHere.
* AFatherToHisMen: He is shown to be willing to put his tank between his men and Squad 7 as his men is retreating.
* AntiVillain: More or less. Turns out, he was just helping Maximilian conquer Gallia so that his homeland gets freedom afterwards.
* BystanderSyndrome: In the games, he was a silent spectator to Selvaria's situation since the beginning, but can do nothing about it as much as he wants to because Maxmillian is his boss. Averted in the anime, where while he is much less silent about it.
* ChivalrousPervert: The man practically channels [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Shunshui Kyoraku]] at times during the anime. Fitting, considering his seiyuu voiced him as well.
* CoDragons: With Selvaria and Gregor as members of the Triumvirate.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Does not take kindly to Maxmillian's manipulation and DomesticAbuse of Selvaria. Sadly, because the former is his boss and his homeland's independence depends on being in his service, he can do nothing about it and keeps his distaste to himself. [[spoiler: Maxmillian ordering Selvaria to use her Final Flame]], is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Once he comes to know about it, he is visibly disgusted and horrified.
-->'''Jaeger''': [[TranquilFury Can't say I'm impressed, Your Grace. Making a lady cry?]]
* FireForgedFriends: Both Jaeger and Gregor are former enemies, but now that they are working together they are quite willing to confide in each other, and despite being total opposites personality-wise get along surprisingly well.
** He is also this with Selvaria, who, in the games, tried to be nice to when Maximilian was a prick to make up for his inability to intervene on her behalf.
* HeelRealization: Begins rethinking his alignment after [[spoiler: Selvaria is ordered to use her Final Flame and realising that he was an AccompliceByInaction towards her situation]], and becomes certain in his decision after being defeated by Squad 7.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Don't let his affable ladies man attitude fool you. He's very sharp, and in the anime he figures out [[spoiler: someone was trying to kill Maximilian in Episode 9]] on his own.
* NiceGuy: Despite being on the villain team.
* PunchClockVillain: Especially in the anime version, where he's basically like the aformentioned Kyoraku, except on the villain team.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Decides to bail from the Empire after [[spoiler: he realizes that Maximilian is a cold-blooded villain and he's one by proxy for doing nothing about his behaviour.]]
* ToughLove: His approach towards [[LoveMartyr Selvaria]] in the anime. Rather than simply being kind to her as was the case in the game, he makes tongue-in-cheek jabs about her feelings for Maximilian on a regular basis, hoping they will make her realise how unhealthy their relationship is.
* TranquilFury: Is absolutely seething with rage when he comes to know about [[spoiler: Selvaria's fate]], but masks this well in his boss' presence.
* TurnsRed: Has a tendency to issue ALL his orders at once when heavily damaged.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: His fate at the end of the game is unknown. [[spoiler: He's SparedByAdaptation in the anime where he can be seen in the background in the train station while the ending songs plays. It's a blink-or-miss moment.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Recognizes Welkin as one immediately, rather than a merely lucky commander.
* YouMonster:
** In the original game [[spoiler: Maximilian ordering Selvaria to use her Final Flame]] finally prompts him to break his silence regarding his treatment towards her, and is the first step to him realising how much of a monster he truly is.
** In the anime, his misgivings towards Maximilian hit their peak when he finds out [[spoiler: Selvaria's aide Karl, the anime version of Johann, beat him to the punch regarding calling him out for abusing and callously discarding Selvaria and was shot in cold blood for it.]]

!! Major General Berthold Gregor
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_berthold_gregor.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ChikaoOhtsuka (Japanese), Roger Jackson (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'' | ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesIII''

General of the Empire's Northern Forces. A veteran of EWI and brilliant tactician, Gregor serves as a member of the ''Triumviri''. A nobleman with utter loyalty to the Empire and its values, he looks down on the Gallian Milita and has a distaste for the Darcsen people.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: Gregor's villainous characteristics are played up in the anime adaptation.
* BadassBookworm: Gregor is a very intelligent officer and is well-versed in calculating battle plans.
* BadassCape: Gregor's standard uniform has a red and black cape.
* BlueBlood: He insults the entire Gallian militia as a bunch of commoners. His treatment of Darcsens is also abhorrent.
* BackgroundBoss: His armored train, the Equus.
* ClassyCane: Berthold has a black cane due to his severe leg injury.
* CoDragons: With Selvaria and Jaeger as members of Drei Stern.
* CoolTrain: When you face him, he commands the Equus, a powerful armed train reflecting his horse riding background.
* DisneyVillainDeath: The Equus falls to the waters below after [[spoiler:the bridge is destroyed in Fouzen, taking Gregor with it.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** In the anime, he is vocally disgusted by a cowardly Gallian commander's attempts at deserting his post and has him summarily executed.
** Despite some jerkish behavior towards his fellow Imperials, [[AFatherToHisMen he states he always considers potential casualties before going into battle.]]
* EvilWearsBlack: He wears a black military uniform and is a villain.
* FlatEarthAtheist: A variation. He think Selvaria's Valkyria power is a joke, and that victory can only be achieved by the Empire's military power and good strategy instead of relying on some mystical potency.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Wearing glasses and one of the most unsympathetic Imperial generals, being a wholeheartedly racist guy who supports concentration camps and is not at all a pleasant person even to his own men.
* HandicappedBadass: He may have an injured leg, but he still has some fight left in him.
* HateSink: Of the four main Imperial commanders, he has no sympathetic and few likable traits.
* {{Hypocrite}}: In his dying moments, he [[spoiler:accuses Gallians of being cowards for taking down the Equus by bombing the rails]]. This after he spent the whole battle hiding up inside his superarmored train.
* InsufferableGenius: He is an excellent military strategist, and he is happy to hammer that on everyone's face.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Despite being a core part of Maximillian's team, Gregor is totally kept in the dark of Maximillian's true ambitions to overthrow the corrupt Empire he fervently serves. Exactly how Maximillian would have dealt with him is unclear, as Gregor died long before the prince's plans were set in full motion.
* MechanicalHorse: In a manner of speaking. He is an avid equestrian, and he goes to battle aboard a custom armored train car he has named "Equus".
* NaziNobleman: He clearly has all the markings of one, even down to his speech mannerisms.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Blonde with Glasses, remarkably opressive, even when compare to his fellow countrymen, and the fact he runs a concentration camp makes Gregor remarkably similar to the Nazi officer Heinrich Himmler, head of the notoriously vile organization of Nazi Germany, the "SS".
* ObviouslyEvil: Black uniform, withered face as well as an outlook that makes him look like a nazi even more than others? It's surprising that he's not only competent, but also has some fleshing-out as a character beyond elitism and evil.
* OhCrap: At the end of the liberation of Fouzen, Gregor is shocked when [[spoiler:the bridge is collapsing from under him]].
* PerpetualFrowner: Gregor is almost always seen with a frown on his face.
* ShootTheHostage: In the anime, when cornered in Fouzen, Gregor threatens to fire upon the present Darcsen civilians with the Equus if Squad 7 does not withdraw. [[spoiler:Faldio has no intent to withdraw.]]
* SergeantRock: While Gregor does have a personality fit for TheNeidermeyer, he actually has read a book or two on military tactics and actually proves a legitimate threat to the Gallian forces, because, despite the fact he's a {{Jerkass}} to his troops (especially in the anime), he's a competent, effective {{Jerkass}}.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Has an obsession with destroying the Edelweiss in the anime.
* TheStrategist: Gregor studied military history and tactics when he was at the naval academy. By the time of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'', he is a skilled military strategist for the Empire.
* ThisCannotBe: He utters something along these lines when the bridge is dropped from under his invincible armored train.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Empire, which would have put him at odds with Maximillian had he lived.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He apparently gets along reasonably well with Jaeger despite their opposing personalities.

!! Captain Giorgios Geld

->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

----

* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: After Largo convinces Eleanor IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim, he manages to weasel his way back to Imperial headquarters via prisoner exchange, but upon arriving discovers that [[EvenEvilHasStandards his torture of non-Darcsen civilians really pissed off Maximilian, who orders him executed.]]
* CharacterDeath: He gets sentenced to death when his ColdBloodedTorture on civilians is discovered by Maximilian.
* ColdBloodedTorture: His favorite hobby and FatalFlaw. In the past, it already had him serve time for war crimes but he was eventually let go. His good fortune runs out when Maximillian is in charge of his fate.
* DirtyCoward: When ''he'' is on the receiving end, though, he's quick to beg for his life.
* FatalFlaw: His fetish for ColdBloodedTorture results in his court-martial and death on Maximilian's orders.
* HatedByAll: [[EvenEvilHasStandards It's said his fellow Imperials all despise him for his sadistic nature,]] but his ingenuity as a commander means he isn't quite expendable, though barely tolerated. Unfortunately for him, his luck runs out when his evil draws the ire of Maximillian.
* ISurrenderSuckers: Was clearly TRYING to pull this, but no-one was fooled.
* KarmicDeath: Let's just say his DirtyCoward tendencies backfire HARD.
* OhCrap: He realizes his fate the moment he returns to the Imperial headquarters.
* SmugSnake: After being returned to Imperial headquarters via prisoner exchange, he makes derisive comments towards that Gallian's "weakness" and is elated of how he will take revenge. It makes his [[OhCrap reaction]] to his impending fate all the more satisfying.
* ShootTheHostage: Is all too willing to do this [[StealthBasedMission if you let your troops be seen during his side mission]], causing an immediate GameOver.

!! Johann Oswald Eisen/Karl Oswald
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc_johann_oswald_eisen.png]]
-> '''Voiced by:''' Hiroshi Okamoto (Japanese), Creator/YuriLowenthal (English)
->'''Appears in:''' ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles''

A lowly Imperial engineer who replaced the original assistant engineer to Selvaria. Co-star of the ''Behind Her Blue Flame'' DLC Missions.

In the anime adaptation, he appears with his original name, Karl Oswald, and his role in the story is changed to a low-ranking Imperial officer assisting the Empire's generals.

----

* AccidentalPervert: Johann passed out after mission 1. Selvaria went to look at him before the start of mission 2, and accidentally rested her (ahem) "assets" on Johann's arm.
* AccompliceByInaction: Much like General Jaeger, he was aware of Maximilian's abuse and manipulation, but could do nothing about it due to his status. [[spoiler: in the anime he [[GrewASpine Grows A Spine]] and calls Maximilian out for rewarding Selvaria's love and devotion by ordering her to be a suicide bomber. Unfortunately, he gets [[NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished killed]] for it.]]
* AscendedExtra: He went from a faceless EliteMook in the base game to being a central protagonist of a DLC.
* BodyguardCrush: Seems to develop one on Selvaria in a manner that ironically, mirrors her feelings for Maximilian. In his eyes, she believed in him and gave him the courage to fight on the front lines as an Imperial soldier. He does so because he wants to stay by her side forever, either in victory or death. [[spoiler: When he finally stands up for Selvaria and calls out Maximilian for abusing her and throwing her out like trash, the latter occurs.]]
* BystanderSyndrome: Is aware of Maximilian being an abusive jerkass, but holds his tongue to keep his job.
* CallForward: When you take out Musaad in the second DLC mission (he appears as an enemy ace Musaad The Mole), Johann has a quick conversation with his buddy Otto about aces, and Otto says that cannon fodders like them will never get to the level of veteran aces... guess what happened to Johann later.
* DeathByAdaptation: While he survived his plot arc in the games (the death of Oswald the Iron is dependent on the player), in the anime [[spoiler: [[NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished Maximilian kills him when he confronts him about abusing and manipulating Selvaria before ultimately ordering her to die.]]]]
* DeclarationOfProtection: In the epilogue of his chapter he declares to always stay by Selvaria's side, for better or for worse. What's notable is that this declaration is to himself, he never actually tells Selvaria how he feels or why he requests a reassignment from engineer to scout.
* DubNameChange: His original name in Japanese was something along the lines of Karl Oswald. Presumably so that he won't be confused with the Gallian engineer Karl Landzaat.
* TheFaceless: In the games he's never seen without his face-obscuring helmet, like any other Imperial {{Mook}}, although when he's taken aback he'll lean back his head to show off his eyes above the visor and, implicitly, his humanity.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: He's the protagonist of the "Behind Her Blue Flame" DLC, a side story which deals with the early days of the war when the empire was first invading Gallia. In the climax, he rescues [[AntiVillain Selvaria]] from poison gas traps [[FatBastard General Damon]] set.
* LovableCoward: At the beginning of the DLC he's shown to be skittish, cowardly, and overwall weak. One of his potentials even reflect this where he has a chance to get a decrease in his stats when facing the enemy. By the end, he's grown a backbone and becomes an ace Imperial scout.
* MeaningfulName: "Eisen" means iron in German. Put Oswald and Eisen together and you get Oswald the Iron, his first Ace nickname.
* TheMedic: His primary role as Selvaria's aide is to heal her with ragnaid should she get injured. He's also the only one who can save her when she becomes addled by poisonous gas since he carries a cure.
* NonActionGuy: During the first few missions of the DLC he's no fighter, his potentials reflecting this with having a penalty when attacking enemies and being very, very fragile. Johann is better off playing his intended support role, allowing Selvaria to steamroll anything and anyone in her way while he backs her up by using his ample supply of grenades to destroy barricades and occasionally healing her as the situation calls for it. Though this changes later on. See TookALevelInBadass below.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: [[spoiler: Is killed for calling out Maximilian for his [[DomesticAbuse treatment]] of Selvaria and for rewarding her love and devotion by ordering her to die.]]
* PunchClockVillain: A heroic and nice guy that just happened to be working for the Imperial invasion. [[spoiler: Although when fought in the campaign as "Ozwald the Iron," he's defending a concentration camp, as if to emphasize that even a cog in the Imperial war machine is still supporting something evil.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: After taking Ghirlandaio with Selvaria, he requests to be reassigned as a scout to fight on the front lines instead of an engineer. He also gains the nickname "Oswald the Iron" after his BigDamnHeroes moment when saving Selvaria. If you play the Covert Ops "Azure Witch" secret mission, you get to see Oswald the Iron in action as a very powerful scout with all of Johann's strengths and none of his weaknesses. During the campaign, he's seemingly promoted to "Oswald the Steel," then "Oswald the Gold" and finally "Oswald the Alloy" in DLC maps.

* TheBusCameBack: After [[spoiler: the failed kidnapping attempt]], he returns in ''Valkyria Chronicles II''.
