* TheUnchosenOne: Suzune and Kazuki were specifically targeted for the summon to the kingdom of Lyngel. He just got caught up in the backwash.

* BrokenPedestal: Usato, along with the rest of the class, saw her as a "perfect, unapproachable, ideal beauty," shocked that she spoke to him like an equal. He sees her go all {{Otaku}} as the summoning circle appears, and his belief that she's the most beautiful girl he knows shatters like a window that a baseball crashed through.

* TheDreaded: Quickly racks up this reputation during his stay in Luqvis. If it wasn't for his Blue Grizzly or the tremendous showing of power he demonstrated against Halfa, it was his [[TrainingFromHell borderline sadistic training]] of Nack that made him rightfully feared throughout the kingdom.

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Wishes he had magic power so he could cast spells to keep the rain from landing on him on his way home. He gets whisked away to a world with magic, but then has to go through TrainingFromHell to learn how to use it.

* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: PlayedForLaughs with his mannerisms and training. Usato seems to know his training is completely grueling and unreasonable, but isn't sure why everyone else seems to be horrified by it as it just became a natural part of his life. This and the absurdities he encounters clash heavily with his attempts to be a HumbleHero and a normal person beneath everyone's notice.

* ExpressiveHair: His HairAntennae tend to represent how he is feeling in comedic scenes.

* LogicalWeakness: His entire fighting style is that of a brute who only uses his physical body to battle. Naturally this means that he is ill-equipped to deal with enemies that can prevent him from hitting them via {{Intangibility}} as shown in volume 4.

* OutsideContextProblem: Rose seems to have trained him to fill this role. In a world totally focused on what magic an individual has, someone being outright superhuman through training their body is relatively unheard of and no one has any idea on how to prepare for him. Part of this gradually becomes a subversion as news of his feats become spread out across the kingdoms, but then there's the fact that he's from another world. Which means he also applies foreign logic to his abilities that are against all the rules and logic of this one, such as ''baseball pitching'' his magic as actual physical projectiles despite them having no mass or weight.

* StoneWall: Compared to other trained combat mages, he's this. He's really fast, really tough, and has a monstrous HealingFactor, but offensively, he's just got moderately decent SuperStrength whereas everyone else is a walking artillery battery who can obliterate entire platoons of infantry at once.

* CantRefuseTheCallAnymore: Initially quite hesitant to join Lyngel's campaign against the demons, he relents when he realizes he doesn't have a choice, if he wants to survive. King Lyngel bowing his head to the ground and apologizing for summoning heroes without consent is what finally sways him.

* AscendedFangirl: On Earth she was a ClosetGeek and {{Otaku}}, who is overjoyed at being summoned to another world to become a magical hero(ine).

* CuriousAsAMonkey: She has absolutely no respect for the privacy of others. She not only strips Usato's shirt in public, without warning or consent, but goes through his diary without permission while he's out training with Rose.

* DeadpanSnarker: As her screentime increases, it becomes increasingly apparent that she's mostly there to snark at Usato.
* FantasticRacism: A major problem in her quest. As a beastfolk, it is unlikely that anyone outside of Lyngel would help her and the risk that she would be sold into slavery is quite high. Even if that wasn't an issue, the world's discrimination against healing mages means that the chances of her finding someone with the capability to save her mother were pretty slim. Even in Lyngel there were only three people who could help her but would be unable to make it to her mother for some reason or another.

* RedBaron: Prophet Princess is what Rose calls her. Apparently, her role in the clan is to sense oncoming dangers to the Beastfolk race and warn them about it.
* {{Seers}}: She can see into the future. If she's sleeping, she can see up to a whole year but typically she isn't able to see very far. However, perhaps the reason why she views this ability as a curse is that once she sees the future it cannot be changed... [[TimeyWimeyBall typically]]. There are exceptions where if the future can be changed, she will be able to see a ''second'' future and will be able to show glimpse of either future to the one that could change it.

* LateArrivalSpoiler: Nea appears on the cover for the 12th light novel, showing that she's at least more important than the simple village girl she claims to be. This is admittedly a larger problem in the west as the series had barely any progress on translations for English speakers. By the time the 12th light novel was released, translations for both the light novel and manga had only gotten up to Nea's introductory arc.

* NotSoAboveItAll: After being revealed as [[spoiler: the necromancer who has taken control over the village]] she shares many of the same reactions towards Usato that many his friends do when he does something strange.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: They come across as a gang of angry assholes, but they occasionally show a softer side to Usato, Nack, and even Fellum.
* LightningBruiser: They are all muscle-headed thugs, but thanks to Rose they can move faster than the human (or demon) eye can see on the battlefield.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: According to [[spoiler: Fellum,]] they look like a mix of goblins, ogres, and bandits. They don't look like they'd get along, at all, and she's right. Fear of Rose's wrath is the only thing keeping them civil.
* {{Troll}}: They love to poke and provoke each other, and Usato, just to get a rise out of it. But if they take it too far, Rose will clamp down, violently.
* VitriolicBestBuds: They are constantly insulting, stealing food, and literally headbutting each other. But they are also a tight-knit unit that works very well together.

* BystanderSyndrome: Constantly subjected to it. Mina and her brown nosing hangers-on constantly harass him, they use him as target practice, and leave his unconscious form in public, yet nobody ever so much as carries him out of the middle of the street.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His parents abandoned him once they discovered he was a healing mage, and not a water mage like their family is traditionally known for. This included locking him in the house for years, refusing to allow him to speak to other people, and eventually sending him to the academy to be rid of him.
* DesperatelySeekingAPurposeInLife: Before he met Usato he had no prospects or interests outside of magic school, which did nothing to help his depression and rock-bottom self-esteem. Being offered a spot on the Rescue Squad gives him a much needed purpose and goal, as well as the HeroicSecondWind to complete Usato's TrainingFromHell.

* PowerIncontinence: In the past he could heal other people as well as himself, but his depression and isolation robbed him of the ability to connect with others, so he could only heal himself. He rediscovers his ability to heal others during the fight with Mina, healing her hands when he stops her from self-destructing.

* LovingBully: As Usato says, she's "a bit awkward." She's in love with Nack to the point that she arranged to attend the same school as him just to see him again, but frustrated with her inability to express it, with Nack's situation as a Healing specialist (which is extremely looked down upon to the point that he was disowned for it) and most importantly, with Nack's constant refusal to stand up for himself or try and better his situation. At some point she became physical with him, and after that she lost the ability to express herself to him in any other way than bullying. In the end, however, she just wanted her friend back.
* OhCrap: Expect her to have this reaction whenever a healing mage shows themselves capable of even matching her skills. Although a particularly notable one is after Usato catches her in the act of bullying Nack.
* PlayingWithFire: Specializes in fire magic, especially fire-balls and explosions.

* ReunionVow: [[spoiler: Vows to come to Lyngel and take Nack away from the rescue squad once she has gotten strong enough to do so, because it would be annoying if he "went and disappeared." It's this, alongside Usato's "bit awkward" comment, that makes Nack realize she's a {{Tsundere}} with a crush on him. As his thoughts show, he can't pretend the last 2 years didn't happen, but he can choose to get along with her going forward.]]

* StealthHiBye: He loves to suddenly appear behind people, in fact his first meeting with Usato and party is done this way.

* TheWorfEffect: He deliberately invokes this trope with himself as the Worf, with guidance from Gladys and Welsey, in order to demonstrate Usato's skill and strength to the people of Luqvis by challenging him to a duel in front of the students at the training ground. Since Halfa is considered an unbeatable opponent to the student body, having a "useless healing mage" like Usato not only fight Halfa, but ''beat'' him in a duel shows everyone that healers (and Usato specifically) can be terrifying opponents.

* TechnicianVersusPerformer: The Technician to Usato's Performer. However, because this is a combat situation, the technician actually has the advantage with more precise movements and being able to see the flaws in others' fighting styles while the performer can pull off crazy feats of strength but has incredibly sloppy and easy-to-read movements.

* TheAlcoholic: Due to the current situation, she's often found guzzling down "elixers".

* BrokenBird: While we don't see most of the situation that caused her to become this way; by the time the heroes have gotten to the kingdom, it's mostly covered in ice, TheHero is well on his way to becoming another Wicked Dragon and she doesn't have the experience or the resources to fix either of her problems so she just resigned herself to drinking elixers.

* TemptingFate: Actually, she provides a rare averted example. She's still hopeful that they can defeat Karon because his transformation into a dragon hasn't reached it's second phase... except unbeknownst to her it had just earlier in the day.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Usato believes she's the same age as Rose but her the stress of the current situation has aged her appearance quite a bit.

! Demons

* BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad: What does she call Rescue Squad? "Kidnappers" for taking the grievously wounded off the battle field for treatment.

* RevengeMyopia: Wants to kill Rose badly to "wash away her mentor's regrets," ie, wants to avenge his death so he could rest in peace. There are three issues with this. 1.) Her mentor, the demon king, was in charge of the invading army and is the clear aggressor. 2.) Not only did he wipe out Rose's squad, but cost her an eye. 3.) The demon king is very much alive, which her peers point out, repeatedly.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Years prior, Rose had the man that would've become the demon king downright dead to rights after he sacrificed his squad to kill Rose's. Right as she was about to land the finishing blow, Amira jumped in the way much like Rose's closest subordinate [[TakingTheBullet did for her]], shaking up Rose enough to relent and for the two to escape. Amira has no idea that had she not done that, the current demon king's war would've never managed to take off.

* BrainsEvilBrawnGood: Inverted. The Wicked Dragon is the more physically capable of the two brothers and is an OmnicidalManiac. Falga is more magically proficient and helps the heroes with the conflict in volume 5.

* EvilIsNotAToy: Nea and her parents kept him locked in the basement of their manor, planning to use him as a giant, undead attack dog if they were ever threatened by a powerful foe like Usato. Unfortunately for Nea, he quickly breaks free of her control and becomes a threat to her, her village, and the entire world.

* OutsideContextProblem: Though its actions in the past are responsible for several conflicts which persist into the present day, no one knew just how significant a character it was. None of the main heroes knew of its existence, Nea just thought it was one of her parent's pets and even the Demon King figured it was simply an interesting existence at best which would gradually fade away as time went on.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The Demon King made use of him for one night and one night only. Afterward, three countries had been completely wiped out.

* ChickMagnet: By volume 4, Usato has managed to win the hearts of Suzune, Fellum, Eva and likely Nea. ''Possibly'' Amako as well but that's more ambiguous.

* GotVolunteered: The moment Rose learned he has the aptitude for healing magic, she renders him unconscious, carries him to Rescue Squad, and puts him through TrainingFromHell the next day.

* GenreRefugee: Like his two friends, he's just an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent suddenly transported to another world and asked to fight against an army of demons. He's understandably freaked out at the prospect of taking lives in a war, not to mention the possibility of being killed himself. It takes a pep talk from Usato to get him focused an motivated the night before their first real battle.

* ClosetGeek: Heavily implied. As the Student Council president, she had to keep her Otaku hobbies a secret to maintain her popular girl image. But after her and the others are transported to the other world, she's not only excited about becoming a MagicKnight in a fantasy world, but spends most of the series [[LampshadeHanging hanging lampshades]] and quoting tropes from adventure, fantasy and romantic pop-culture (and complaining when real-life doesn't match up with her expectations).

* TheHeavy: [[spoiler:Nea uses him as her main weapon against Usato when he invades her house. Though, it turns out he was just a warm up for her ''real'' trump card, the Evil Dragon.]]

Rose, a native-born individual and former royal knight of Lyngel, surpasses them on sheer CharlesAtlasSuperpower that the world trembles in fear of even knowing she exists, and Usato putting the teachings she gave him into practice already surpassed his companions.

* MarkOfShame: Despite having healing power, she still has a missing eyes. [[spoiler:This was an injury inflicted by the Demons during the mission that killed her old men and thus she left it as a reminder]].

* MyGreatestFailure: The loss of the first version of the Rescue Squad still weighs heavily on her. It's the reason she puts Usato and the other squad members through such hellish training, to make sure history doesn't repeat.

* WorldsStrongestMan: Well, World's Strongest Healing Mage, but she's so physically beyond any boundaries of human logic that even Demons are horrified by the mere prospect of her power, comparable to the foreign-summoned Heroes if not exceeding them personally to a degree. She imparts a fair amount of this onto Usato with her TrainingFromHell, and clearly has the idea that he may even surpass her some day.

* {{Tsundere}}: It's pretty obvious that she has gained a crush on Usato but she'll never say it outloud. Instead she'll opt to either yell at him, attack him or both. It's PlayedForLaughs largely due to her being unable to land a single hit on Usato unless he himself allows it.

* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Because she's the daughter of a noble house that funds Luqvis Academy, nobody in the staff can reign in her destructive behavior, at least not before she straight up kills somebody, and maybe not even then.

* TheAtoner: She's genuinely sorry that Nack had to put up with so much abuse from Mina at the academy she runs. After Usato leaves and Nack plans to join the Rescue Squad in Lyngle, she expidites his resignation from Luqvis Academy and arranges transport for him as recompense, while offering a sincere apology and some words of encouragement.

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Lets Usato wonder around town with his Blue Grizzly "pet" Bluey, and train Nack so the boy can defend himself from Mina and her gang of thugs.

* AwesomenessByAnalysis: The main reason she does so well against Usato isn't her ice magic or training but her ability to analyse his fighting style and exploit the weaknesses in it. Even when Usato pulls his normal crazy stunts, she is barely perterbed and if their fight was a regular match she would've ''won''.

* DidntSeeThatComing: She may have been able to account for Usato's fighting style but she couldn't account for just how [[{{Determinator}} damned determined he was]]. From her perspective Usato should've been incapacitated when she froze his legs. His answer was to ''rip out the ground beneath him''. She freezes his arm. He uses it as a makeshift shield from her other attacks. She encases him half in ice. He dislocates his shoulders to break out of it through sheer force of will!

* AnIcePerson: Her magic element is that of ice. She's also quite creative with it's applications, using it to form bullets and daggers or just generally using it to freeze people.

* TechnicianVersusPerformer: The Technician to Usato's Performer. However, because this is a combat situation, the techinician actually has the advantage with more precise movements and being able to see the flaws in others' fighting styles while the performer can pull off crazy feats of strength but has incredibly sloppy and easy to read movements.

* AcidAttack: The dragon's main method of attacking others is by shooting jets of poison from it's mouth.
* AmbiguousSituation: Just what would have happened if Nea had left the dragon alone? Falga believes that it would have revived with all its power at its disposal, free to wreak havoc across the world. However, both the Demon King and the Wicked Dragon himself claim that he would have simply rotted away as tme passed. The only thing that seems agreed upon is that whatever would happen would have happened in around 300 years or so.
* AncientEvil: Given that Nea is at least 300 years old and wasn't aware of the true nature of this beast, the Wicked Dragon must be extremely old. It's brother Falga is referred to as a god dragon who's lifespan if dozens of times longer than the average dragon.

* CruelMercy: The previous hero spared his life, but left him an undead, souless husk consumed by rage and hatred. Even his former ally the Demon Lord thinks it would have been better for everyone if the hero had just killed the dragon and been done with it.

* TheJuggernaut: It's one of only a few entities that actually surpasses ''[[StoneWall Usato]]'' in physical condition. It's brother Falga states that he would never be able to win if the two fought because he "controls power" while Falga "controls wisdom".

Most people in Luqvis believed this skill was even more useless than Healing Magic, but Halfa was able to train himself to observe the movement of energy inside an opponent and predict their attacks and spells in advance, making him able to dodge and counterattack with ease.

* WorthyOpponent: He's very happy to meet and fight against Usato, as most of the students at the Magic Academy could barely touch him with their magic. After losing their duel, Halfa resolves to train himself even harder so that he can face off against Usato in a future duel. He even considers travelling to Lyngle with Nack to challenge Rose to a duel, despite knowing she'll likely [[CurbStompBattle curb stomp him]] without stopping for breath.

* BullyHunter: Downplayed but after catching Mina in the act of bullying Nack, Usato is clearly ''pissed'' at her actions. However, instead of hunting her down, he teaches Nack how to defend himself and fight against her.

* PeekABangs: A lock of hair hides half his face.

* InnocentCohabitation: Enforced. They all live under the same roof as Rose [[spoiler: and Fellum]], yet they're all terrified of trying something because Rose would retaliate with extreme force.

She's also just as prone to comedic situations as any other character, such as getting a door kicked into her face as she complains about Usato's entrance, or proudly explains her knowledge and powers solely because she feels pride in doing so.
