He's incapable of even thinking about marrying anyone besides Virginia even if she dies before he does and his HappyPlace is a tropical island where he's a millionaire (due to being the only person able to clean the ocean), his butler is a guy who's slightly worse at table soccer/foozball than he is, and surrounded by [[TwinThreesomeFantasy a harem of duplicates of Virginia]].

* FunSize: She is really short, Burt and Virginia mention it as their go-to joke about her.

* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: With rich people who succeeded better in their career.
* MamaBear: She is shown as very protective to Hope, as early as late Season 1, when she [[spoiler: cannonballed through the ceiling to land on a shotgun-toting Maw Maw.]]

* TookALevelInDumbass: Earlier episodes she was a smart, quick-witted, sarcastic but friendly girl who was there to comment on Jimmy's situation. By the end of the first season, she showed some neurosis and having panic attacks that made her more prone to mistakes and odd behavior, making her more of a RoundedCharacter.

* IdiotSavant: Has many hidden talents. Some that show up when she's in one of her delusions, others that show up when she's lucid.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Although it's justified thanks to her dementia. She has lucid moments, but they're ''very'' few and far between.

* HasTwoMommies: Barney was raised by a couple of lesbians, probably the reason he is CampStraight as an adult. He is shown to have a good relationship with them, as well.

* ACupAngst: A minor insecurity that is brought up a few times. An AlternateUniverse version of herself is shown to have GagBoobs, possibly as a response to this insecurity, since she is working at a strip club.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Compulsively eats dirt, is a perfectionist, and is TerrifiedOfGerms.

* AmbiguousDisorder: It's never clarified what ''exactly'' she suffers from beyond general dementia, as the Chances are so poor that it's likely they weren't able to get an official diagnosis. They describe it as her alternating between being "lucid" and "non-lucid".
* [[IHaveNoSon I Have No Daughter]]: It really says what she thinks of her daughter leaving her daughter and running off to live a life without responsibility when the lie she made up to spare Virginia from the truth portrayed the woman as a [[TooDumbToLive complete moron]] that died in a [[UndignifiedDeath humiliating way]].

* CoolOldLady: She's lived quite an adventurous life, has many different skills, and the dementia and old age haven't slowed her down.

** Despite her [[RacistGrandma less than enlightened view on race]], she encourages Sabrina and Jimmy to get married even though she thinks [[{{Tomboy}} Sabrina is a]] [[MistakenForGay "long-haired pretty boy"]] and is implied to have a romantic relationship with a black, Asian and Jewish men in her youth.

* WrenchWench: During her longer lucid moments, Maw Maw is a skilled mechanic. And electrician. When not lucid, she's also a skilled exterminator.

* FormerlyFat: Through his youth and adulthood, he used to be 100 pounds heavier, until he went through a surgery. He sometimes is seen binge-eating as a form of stress' coping defense.

* ParentalSubstitute: Hope is formally adopted by Sabrina in "Adoption". She also sees Burt and Virginia as parents more than her own biological parents.

* HappilyMarried: To Jimmy. After "Modern Wedding", Jimmy and Sabrina are married and could not be happier.

* ParentalSubstitute: Hope is formally adopted by Sabrina in "Adoption".

* NotSoDifferent: She looks down on Virginia for her lower-class lifestyle but while Virginia makes the best of her poverty, Delilah is very gauche and has cheap tastes (her wedding, for example) and hasn't grown out of her AlphaBitch persona.

* MrFanservice: Technically he is a grandpa, but he is still in his early forties and in better shape than his son. He is more likely to have a ShirtlessScene than anyone else.

* ScrewPolitenessImASenior: Maw Maw usually doesn't have a filter, mostly thanks to her dementia. She also regularly walks around without a shirt.

* ParentalNeglect: The flashback in "Arbor Daze" reveals her parents barely paid any attention to her, treating her more as a nuisance (father) and a bartender (mother) who barely tolerated her. She makes a promise to her doll that she wouldn't do that with her child.

* BigBad: Lucy is the closest thing that the show has to one because she is constantly menacing the Chances' happy life and they also frequently worry that [[InTheBlood Hope will turn out like her]].

* InTheBlood: Her parents are equally as screwed up as her, which may explain her mental instability -- her mother is delusional, while her father is a sociopathic psychiatrist who married a patient that he is ''still'' treating up until the present day.

* InTheBlood: Everyone is afraid she may grow up inheriting her mother's psychological problems. Jimmy and Sabrina are determined to avert this with NurtureOverNature.
