Both are able to inspire undying loyalty UndyingLoyalty from the troops under their command, but while the Major used his men as tools for his plans, Pip genuinely cares about the Wild Geese, and does everything he can to get them out of a situation alive. Both can give very rousing speeches, but Pip's can often be short and sweet, while the Major will just drone on and on. Heck, even in regards to how they treat vampires, the differences are pretty striking. The Major refused vampirism because of how proud he is of his "humanity" and didn't like the idea of "sharing his life with another", as he puts it.
