* ActionDad: Father of his successor Connor Hawke, the two have fought together on occasion.
* ActionPolitician: During ''ComicBook/OneYearLater'', he became the mayor of Star City to help the city through a crisis. And while he stopped being Green Arrow, he was still a BadassNormal and would still use the government resources to personally lead a local SWAT team to fight crime.
* ActionSurvivor: His origin story has him being trapped on an island while he was an IdleRich. The details tend to vary, but [[TookALevelInBadass most of the skills that he uses as Green Arrow were self-taught in there]] as he struggled to survive with only a bow and arrow.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: In his Golden Age origin, he was an archaeologist and expert on Native American cultures, who gained his skills as a tracker and archer through studying the ancient techniques utilized by Native hunters.
* AffectionateNickname: He's referred to as "Ollie" by the people who are close to him.
* AgeLift: Post-Crisis, ComicBook/GreenArrow was aged up nearly 20 years into his 40s. The ''ComicBook/New52'' aged him down back to his 20s.
* AnnoyingArrows: The meta reason that Oliver created his {{Trick Arrow}}s is to avoid this trope, most famously his boxing glove arrows. Some of the DarkerAndEdgier incarnations do actually show the gruesome injuries an arrow can cause... or be utterly useless because the person Oliver is fighting has some kind of SuperToughness that just lets then shrug off his normal arrows.
* AesopAmnesia: In the ''ComicBook/New52'', Oliver learns that he needs to rely on his team and can't fight crime alone at least four separate times, and he always forgets the lesson by the next issue.
* AntiHero: He's a SuperHero who works as TheCowl and is not afraid to go against the law if it means he can help people. He's also often depicted as being something of a black ops agent for the Justice League, doing the dirty jobs that they're not allowed to do.
* ArcherArchetype: Green Arrow is famous for being a SuperHero who uses a bow to fight villains and is considered one of the greatest {{Master Archer}}s in the Franchise/DCUniverse. Some of his DarkerAndEdgier stories have him adopt a more cold and ruthless persona that is associated with archers.
* ARealManIsAKiller: While Oliver doesn't necessarily believe that killing is a passage into manhood, he certainly believes that the moment he stopped being a [[SpoiledBrat spoiled socialite]] with [[IdleRich no direction in life]] happened after he took his first human life.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: He becomes the Mayor of Star City in the ''ComicBook/OneYearLater'' storyline, and uses his authority to personally lead a SWAT team.
* BackFromTheDead: He ended up dying during a HeroicSacrifice to save Metropolis from eco-terrorists, but ended up being resurrected in the ''Quiver'' story arc, with [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]], as Parallax, using the last of his powers to resurrect his old friend, before he perished.
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have powers. He's just good with the bow and has lots and lots of {{Trick Arrow}}s.
* BashBrothers: He gets paired often with [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]], being once of DC's most iconic hero duos with their VitriolicBestBuds relationship. The fact they're both Green {{Color Character}}s is just a bonus.
* BattleCouple: He and ComicBook/BlackCanary form one of the most well-known SuperHero couples in the medium and have often shared the same book, most famously the one simply called ''Green Arrow/Black Canary'', where they fought crime side by side. Though their relationship has been a turbulent affair due to his many faults.
* BeardnessProtectionProgram: In Creator/MikeGrell's run on Green Arrow, he shaves his iconic beard and gets a haircut while he's on the run.
* BelligerentSexualTension: His relationship with ComicBook/BlackCanary often involves them trading barks and arguments, which [[SlapSlapKiss often end up with them in bed]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Even in depictions where he's more of a charming rogue, he can still become incredibly ruthless when his opponents cross a line. Famously he went on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against Prometheus for having killed Lian Harper, which ended with many villains dead.
* {{Blackmail}}: In the New 52, he became part of the new JLA assembled by [[Characters/SuicideSquadSupportStaff Amanda Waller]]. Wasn't originally on the team, but he found out that Catwoman's a member and promised not to tell if he becomes a member.
* BourgeoisBohemian: His liberal views can often contrast with him being an extremely wealthy man, and DependingOnTheWriter it can even make him look like a {{Hypocrite}}, depending on how rich and powerful he is, and how sincere and thoughtful his politics are. This is {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d in issue #1 of ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'' when Ollie takes Dinah back to his place and she's baffled to see how well off he is.
-->'''Dinah:''' You call yourself a social justice warrior, but look at this apartment. Look at this life!
* BowAndSwordInAccord: Creator/JuddWinick had Oliver spend the year following ''ComicBook/InfiniteCrisis'' training to become a swordsman as well as (obviously) an archer. Myth/RobinHood was explicitly named as the inspiration for this.
* CameBackWrong: He ended up being TheSoulless for a while after being brought BackFromTheDead by Parallax, but he eventually got his soul back.
* TheCasanova: He was a famous womanizing in his MillionairePlayboy days, but how much this trait still persists after his CharacterDevelopment can vary DependingOnTheWriter. He's often still TheCharmer and a ChivalrousPervert. Most of the time he still has a steadfast devotion to his LoveInterest ComicBook/BlackCanary, but some controversial storylines had him cheating on her.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He was originally and for a long time after his introduction mild-mannered and apolitical - essentially a better adjusted equivalent to [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman]], at a time when even Batman was more prone to smiling than his current incarnation. His left-wing politics and spikier personality generally only became part of his character in the late Sixties, nearly three decades after the character's introduction.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He manages to have [[MasterArcher near-superhuman archery skills]] who shoot arrows in a [[ImprobableAimingSkills physically impossible manner]] because he was stranded on an island for several years, where the only food he could find was the island's population of extremely agile animals.
* ChickMagnet: He's a {{Hunk}} who has no problem getting attention from women, even when he's not being characterized as TheCasanova. This got him in trouble once when a [[RescueRomance woman he saved actually ended up falling for him]] and she became so fixated on him she become an insane StalkerWithACrush and turned into the villainess Cupid, who would go on to [[{{Yandere}} try to kill Black Canary]] so she could have Oliver for herself.
* ClarkKenting: Ollie's beard style is not quite unique, but rare enough so that anyone who cared could make the connection as his mask covers very little of his face. A few stories suggest that his SecretIdentity is something of an OpenSecret and that he mostly relies on ImplausibleDeniability to avoid legal trouble. Amusingly Ollie gave up on even bothering to wear his domino mask for quite some time because of this. Quite a few heroes and villains have easily recognized him:
** Mia {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d his poor disguise when she began working with him by walking up to him in his civilian identity and pointing out that he was ''obviously'' Green Arrow.
** In one case a police officer that'd been working with Green Arrow showed up at Oliver Queen's house, and when asked how he found out his identity, said that he didn't realize it was supposed to be a secret.
** In the Creator/MikeGrell run, the CIA is able to figure out who he is because of this. Shado and The Seattle Police Department did not even realize he was attempting to hide his identity.
* ColorCharacter: ''Green'' Arrow. He's also sometimes called the "Emerald" Archer.
* ColorCodedEyes: As is appropriate for someone called [[ColorCharacter Green Arrow]] and a green color motif, he also has green eyes, which he has passed on, somewhat improbably, to both of his sons, including the adopted one. The sexy-connotations certainly apply as well, just ask ComicBook/BlackCanary or one of his other {{love interest}}s.
* ColorMotifs: Most of his clothing and equipment are colored green, and he's heavily associated with the color in general.
* ComicBookTime: There's no telling what Oliver's actual physical age is at this point or how long he's been Green Arrow. Between a {{Retcon}} which set Connor Hawke's birth as being just after Ollie became Green Arrow (Connor had previously been the result of a relationship Ollie had in college), Ollie's being reborn into a younger body in ''Green Arrow: Quiver'' and his latest origin story seeming to abandon Ollie's hippie background, it's impossible to get a fix. Following ''ComicBook/{{Flashpoint}}'' his age is given as 25-26, and by Wally West's claim that everyone had ten years of their lives taken away, would imply that Ollie prior to ''Flashpoint'' was 35.
* CoolCar: The "[[ThemeMobile Arrowcar]]" that was similar to [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman's]] "Batmobile". The Arrow-Car was introduced during the time when Green Arrow comics mostly followed a similar formula as Batman (sans the depth and tragedy). However, it was in use for many years and there were several versions of it, all with various upgrades and re-designs. After Oliver lost his fortune, the Arrow-Car became too expensive to keep and he decided to destroy it.
* CrazyJealousGuy: He frequently has a possessive attitude towards ComicBook/BlackCanary and is paranoid about any men getting close to her, much to her annoyance.
* TheConscience: Sometimes plays this role to the Justice League, often being the first one to speak out when they act too authoritarian and reminds them they're supposed to be a force of good for the people, and not to control their lives.
* CrimefightingWithCash: Per Oliver Queen's Post-Crisis origin, as presented in ''Green Arrow: The Wonder Year'', Ollie's original motivations for fighting crime basically came down to "Because I'm Bored and Because I Can". He later found more noble motivations, though. And in the most recent retellings of his origins (such as ''Green Arrow: Year One'' and his ''ComicBook/New52'' incarnation) he always had a noble heart and a desire to help people.
* TheCowl: DarkerAndEdgier stories usually have him operating as this type of SuperHero, being a VigilanteMan who is hell-bent on cleaning up the corrupt Star City by using terror tactics against villains and criminals.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Outside of comics, during the last decade, Green Arrow has [[WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague gone from]] a KidAppealCharacter, arguably TheHeart and ChivalrousPervert at worst, [[{{Series/Smallville}} to the more]] iffy VigilanteMan who ended up killing ComicBook/LexLuthor, [[{{Series/Arrow}} to now]] a Deconstruction of sorts of Ollie's usual MO, modeled after the Creator/MikeGrell take from the comics.
* DeathIsCheap: In the ''Quiver'' story arc Oliver comes BackFromTheDead after being resurrected by [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]], as Parallax, before Hal's own death. Queen later meets Hal on a trip to the after-life, although Jordan has since taken on the role of The Spectre. When later mentioning to [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman]] of Jordan's involvement, Batman replied, "It seems none of our former allies know how to stay dead."
* DefectorFromParadise: The titular character was resurrected without a soul, as well as any memories of his past during his [[DarkerandEdgier more cynical]] years. He seemed to get along fine without it and his soul rested peacefully in Heaven. However, his lack of a soul made him [[DemonicPossession a gateway for possession by powerful demons]], which would be a very bad thing for the entire world. He eventually convinced his soul (still in Heaven at the time) to come back to his body to save his son from being killed by demonic conjurers.
* DependingOnTheArtist: Whether he wears a hat or a hood.
* DependingOnTheWriter:
** How much of [[TheCasanova a womanizer he is]], how unpleasant he is (on a sliding scale from "[[JerkWithAHeartOfGold bit of a tool]], but otherwise okay" to "[[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk world-class asshole]]"), and whether or not he's the sort of man to [[ParentalAbandonment abandon his illegitimate child]].
** His OfficialCouple relationship with Dinah Lance/Black Canary. Either they are one of the most loving, passionate {{Battle Couple}}s in Franchise/TheDCU who have [[SlapSlapKiss had a few bumps but worked through it]], or they are a [[TheMasochismTango toxic and mutually abusive mess who treat each other horribly]]. It happens frequently enough that shippers have to ignore significant portions of their history together.
* DominoMask: His preferred method of identity concealment.
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Infamously, the villainess Shado shot him with an arrow and while he was delirious with fever from a medication, ended up raping him while he [[BedTrick apparently thought he was having sex]] with ComicBook/BlackCanary the whole time (which Shado was aware of since he kept saying Dinah's name). This eventually even led to her becoming pregnant and having a ChildByRape, Robert, as the result of the rape. Over the years, [[DependingOnTheWriter different writers]] on ''Green Arrow'' comics have subsequently taken different positions about whether the sex was consensual or not. Some, (in particular Creator/JuddWinick) referred to the event as an example of Oliver cheating on Dinah, with Dinah herself being unsympathetic to Oliver due to him [[NotIfTheyEnjoyedItRationalization "responding" to Shado]]. Later, another writer had Dinah take the opposite stance while discussing marrying Oliver with Oracle, as when Oracle brought up Shado, Dinah angrily rejected the notion that he was to blame and outright said Shado raped him.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: He was originally clean-shaven and sported a simpler, far less detailed costume. His iconic design and goatee were not introduced until TheSeventies, when he adopted a radically new look in the pages of ''ComicBook/JusticeLeagueOfAmerica''.
* ExpressiveMask: His [[IrislessEyeMaskOfMystery Irisless]] DominoMask can move depending on what he's doing with his eyes.
* {{Expy}}:
** Obviously, he's a SuperHero version of Myth/RobinHood, with the ArcherArchetype, [[ColorMotif green color scheme]], RichesToRags backstory, [[TheCasanova womanizing]] and ChivalrousPervert personalities and champions to the lower classes. Most specifically, his creator Creator/MortWeisinger was first inspired by another Myth/RobinHood expy, The Green Archer from a series of books and films by Creator/EdgarWallace.
** In a rare case of evolving into another Expy, Green Arrow and Speedy were transformed into archery-themed versions of ComicBook/{{Batman}} and ComicBook/{{Robin}} in [[UsefulNotes/TheSilverAgeOfComicBooks The Silver Age]] after starting out as an AdventurerArchaeologist and [[KidHero Boy Adventurer]] respectively in [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks The Golden Age]]. Several of Oliver's traits were explicitly borrowed from [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Bruce Wayne/Batman]], such as a both being MillionairePlayboy with tragic backstories that [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower developed their superhero skills via training]] and [[CrimefightingWithCash use their money to fight crime]]. They also both have: {{Kid Sidekick}}s (Roy Harper/Speedy and [[Characters/NightwingDickGrayson Dick Grayson/Robin]]), a {{Thememobile}} (the Arrowcar and the Batmobile) and a secret ElaborateUndergroundBase (Arrowcave and the Batcave). Decades of DivergentCharacterEvolution (and teen sidekicks becoming standard for a DC hero) have turned Loliver from straight-up "Batman but with arrows!" to his own person but he was very much the same character once.
* FailureHero: In the ''ComicBook/New52'', Ollie can't seem to do anything right. He tries his best, but the few issues he's ever able to solve are usually issues that he caused to begin with due to his incompetence or general stupidity. Most notably, blindly signing off on Aaron Zimm's Panopticon drones ends up causing the deaths of dozens of innocent people simply because he literally didn't bother to read what he was signing.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: DependingOnTheWriter, Ollie doesn't have a great reputation among the superhero community due to his {{smug|Super}} tendencies and boorish behavior. At his worst moments, he could mainly snag the help of his closest friend [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]] strictly because Jordan did a lot worse during his universe-ending stint as Parallax.
* FreudianExcuse: In one retcon, Oliver was shown to have suffered ParentalNeglect as a child. As an adult he became a stereotypical bored rich man who spent most of his time avoiding responsibility. After losing all his money he lost the one thing that made him happy, and tried to compensate for it by gaining the love of the masses as a hero for the poor and downtrodden of society. When in reality, he just wants to be loved, but even when he has friends and a family, and he doesn't know how to genuinely hold on to them and gradually drives them away with his jerkass attitude. He doesn't care about social ills, he wants to play the hero so people will love him. He wants love, but he's not very good at returning it in healthy ways.
* GentlemanAdventurer: He started out this way. When he then lost his fortune, he suffered an identity crisis over whether he'd been superheroing out of a legitimate desire to do good, or just for fun. He thereafter became a much more passionate and socially-conscious do-gooder.
* TheGimmick: Being a MasterArcher SuperHero with {{Trick Arrow}}s and Myth/RobinHood comparisons.
* GoodIsNotNice: {{Deconstruction}}. While Oliver is ultimately a force for good, he has never been particularly nice about it. On his best days, he's rude, arrogant, and is [[HolierThanThou always convinced that his idea is better]]. On most days, he's a sanctimonious, elitist JerkWithAHeartOfGold. At his worst, he's a [[{{Jerkass}} complete asshole]]. Oliver's personal and professional lives are a wreck because of his behavior and actions. His relationship with his friends, family and the superhero community is strained, with him constantly cheating on his long time girlfriend ComicBook/BlackCanary (Dinah Lance), neglecting his sidekick and ward Speedy I/Arsenal/Red Arrow I (Roy Harper), abandoning his biological son Green Arrow II (Connor Hawke) at birth and lying to Connor that he did not know he was his son when they met and Connor became his sidekick. While Oliver generally tries and usually manages to do the right thing, there are times were even his teammates at the Justice League barely tolerate him. While he made a genuine effort to be a better boyfriend and husband to his girlfriend/wife Dinah, and reconnect with Roy and Connor while being a better father to them, and was able to repair his relationship with them and become a better superhero, things went crashing down in the ''Cry for Justice'' & ''Rise and Fall'' storylines where Oliver murders Prometheus for destroying Star City and causing the death of his adopted granddaughter Lian Harper. His family washes their hands of him, with his wife returning her wedding ring and declaring their marriage over and Roy and Connor telling him they are through with him. It's implied that Oliver killing Prometheus is the last straw for his family and his mistreatment of them was the main cause of them leaving him.
* GuileHero: Being just a BadassNormal. He often uses his archery skills in creative ways in order to defeat his most dangerous opponents. He even created most of the {{Trick Arrow}}s that he uses all by himself.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: {{Inverted|Trope}} in the BattleCouple dynamic he has with his LoveInterest Black Canary, as she is a close-combat ActionGirl to contrast to his specialty with archery.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He's a blonde who's famous for his charming personality and his dedication to help the poor and innocent.
* HandicappedBadass: Oliver Queen's appearance in Frank Miller's ''ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns'' story--he may be old, and without an arm, but he can still shoot arrows just fine.
* HandsOffParenting:
** This is what he amounted to when he took in Roy Harper. While they spent plenty of time fighting bad guys together, out of costume Ollie had barely any presence in Roy's life and was pretty oblivious to what was going on with him, including the crippling sense of abandonment and loneliness building up inside Roy that led to his heroin addiction.
** Ollie is also this in "Hard-Traveling Heroes", much to the ire of his son Connor.
* HandsomeLech: He has a history of being a philanderer, which was especially problematic when he was in a relationship with ComicBook/BlackCanary.
* HeadbuttingHeroes: Ollie, a liberal, often had heated rivalry with fellow colleagues who had more conservative views, such as [[Characters/TheFlashBarryAllen Barry Allen]], ComicBook/{{Hawkman}} and even ComicBook/{{Superman}}. But most famously he has this relationship with his VitriolicBestBuds [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan/Green Lantern]] since UsefulNotes/TheBronzeAgeOfComicBooks. While Oliver was a rebellious, radical VigilanteMan who believes in sticking it to the man and helping people even [[ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight if he has to go against the law]], which contrasts with Hal who was a straight-laced, by-the-book SpacePolice who has great faith that the system will always be there to help anyone in need. There was even an entire story arc that explored their relationship, the "Hard-Travelling Heroes" arc, where the two heroes paired on a RoadTripPlot across America and find out what happened to the "American dream."
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Being a VigilanteMan, Green Arrow is not always a beloved public figure in Star City.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: At his worst, he's this. He'll eventually do the right thing (operative word being "eventually"), but not without lots of self-aggrandizing gloating, probably fucking one of his side pieces behind Dinah's back, probably making a bunch of promises to his allies that he drops the ball on delivering, definitely making a bunch of promises to Roy and/or Connor that he drops the ball on delivering, and generally just being a massive douche. Ollie may definitely be one of the good guys, but he is most certainly not a good guy himself.
* HolierThanThou: He's rather infamous for his arrogance, preachiness and self-righteousness when talking about his political views to others which often led to HeadbuttingHeroes scenarios with his colleagues and co-workers.
* HonestCorporateExecutive: Oliver started out this way before he evolved beyond being a ComicBook/{{Batman}} {{Expy}}.
* {{Hunk}}: He is very handsome and has a muscular body and broad shoulders.
* HyperspaceArsenal: Those quivers of his sure hold a lot more arrows than it looks.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Ollie has a history of not practicing what he preaches and condemning people for things he himself had done if he hasn't done worse. Case in point, he spent most of the first issue of ''ComicBook/TheFlashInfiniteFrontier'' trying to force [[Characters/TheFlashWallyWest Wally West]] to quit being the Flash after the events of ''ComicBook/HeroesInCrisis'' and while [[spoiler:he's unaware that Roy was among those who came back after ''ComicBook/DarkNightsDeathMetal'', this still ignores that one: Wally wasn't in control of himself with the cover-up (Thawne screwed with his mind), two: Ollie had a history of HandsOffParenting and Roy was only in Sanctuary due to Ollie's crappy parenting, and three: Ollie himself has killed people -- and unlike Wally, Ollie often did it on purpose. Barry calls him out on this. To make matters worse, the arc in question sees Wally was ultimately revealed to be innocent in the deaths themselves; the true killer was Savitar, who attempted to hijack the Speed Force, so not only was Ollie being a hypocrite, he was revealed to be blaming an innocent man]].
* IdenticalStranger: Travis Morgan, the lead character of ''ComicBook/TheWarlordDC'', looks like a white-haired version of Ollie. In fact, during ''Warlord'' creator Mike Grell's tenure as writer of ''Green Arrow'', he wrote an issue where Travis ends up in Seattle during one of his trips out of Skartaris and ends up having to team up with Ollie and Dinah after being accosted by several criminals mistaking him for Ollie after a crime boss put a bounty on Ollie's head.
* IdleRich: Used to just be a MillionairePlayboy before he got stuck in a deserted island and was forced to become an ActionSurvivor, which changed his entire worldview. Oliver still invokes this to hide his activities as Green Arrow and maintain his SecretIdentity.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: He's a [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower self-trained]] SuperHero whose [[TheGimmick gimmick]] is being a MasterArcher. Oliver himself has boasted that he never misses, and he has been shown to make some impossible shots such as hitting targets without directly looking at them, hitting a drop of water coming out of a faucet or being able to hit on target even while in midair or off balance. If it looks like he missed then it's likely a case of him pulling an ExactlyWhatIAimedAt. They have, at times, been depicted as so implausibly good, some people [[EpilepticTrees theorize]] that they actually have psychokinesis and are simply using it to show off by making it look like they're the world's greatest archers. The fact that the artists and writers of their titles usually don't do very much research into how archers actually even ''hold'' their bows drives it home for a lot of people.
* InTheBlood: The ''ComicBook/New52'' adds this element to Oliver's backstory in regards to his MasterArcher skills, revealing his family comes from a long line of archers, and is descended from the Arrow Clan.
* InTheHood: He wore a hood as part of his SuperHero costume during the Creator/MikeGrell series ''The Longbow Hunters'' and the following ''Green Arrow'' monthly series (1980s and 1990s run). ComicBook/BlackCanary designed it for him so he wouldn't catch a chill in Seattle's rainy clime. Since he had abandoned his [[TrickArrow trick and gadget arrows]] for broadheads instead, it was a better fit for a [[DarkerAndEdgier darker and grittier]] Green Arrow than the old "Robin Hood" hat from [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks the Golden Age]]. Initially he still wore his DominoMask underneath the hood, but after enough people explain that they already know who he is, he gives up the mask and wears only the hood. DependingOnTheArtist, it still hid the face--it was the beard that defeated the whole purpose of it all.

->'''Debut:''' ''ComicBook/GreenArrow'' (Vol 2) #0

->''"I'm not giving up on him. I don't care if he's a jerk or a traitor or whatever. It's taken all this time to find him and I'm not giving up on my father."''

Connor Hawke is the biological son
of Oliver Queen and Sandra "Moonday" Hawke. A fan of Green Arrow, he worked alongside his father for a time, until Oliver's "death". Connor would take up the Green Arrow mantle to honor his hero.
----
* AbortedArc: His long-awaited return after being RetGone was teased in issue #25 of ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'' but unfortunately didn't happen before the book got a new creative team.
* AffirmativeActionLegacy: His father's multiracial
successor as the second Green Arrow.
* AnimalMotifs: He's sometimes associated with Hawks, which are phonetically identical his surname "Hawke". This was used heavily in his appearance in ''ComicBook/Robin2021'', where hawk and robin symbolism was used for his rivalry with [[Characters/RobinDamianWayne Damian Wayne]].
* AnimalThemeNaming: His surname "Hawke" is phonetically identical to hawks, which is why he sometimes has them as an {{Animal Motif|s}}. In ''ComicBook/Robin2021'', this was the basis for his rivalry with [[Characters/RobinDamianWayne Damian Wayne]] during the Lazarus tournament, with The League of Shadows claiming that to kill a ComicBook/{{Robin}}, they need a '''Hawk'''e.
* AscendedFanboy: Was introduced as a huge fan of Green Arrow even before the reader knows he's Oliver's son, and eventually becomes Green Arrow.
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have any superpowers, his skills just come from training as a WarriorMonk in an Ashram monastery.
** EmpoweredBadassNormal: After being experimented on by Doctor Sivana, he gained a HealingFactor and became more resistant to pain.
* BadassPacifist: He's a MasterArcher and formidable WarriorMonk considered to be one of the WorldsBestWarrior, yet as a commitment to nonviolence whenever possible, and especially hates taking a life.
* BaldHeadOfToughness: When he's first introduced he's bald, as appropriate for a tough WarriorMonk, and also to make TheReveal that he's Oliver son less obvious. When he adopts the Green Arrow mantle he grows his hair into the dark-skinned blond look he's more know for.
* BashBrothers: Much like how his father Oliver often teamed up with [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]],
Connor Hawke, would also end up teaming up often with successor Green Lanter Kyle Rayner.
* TheBusCameBack: After
the two ''ComicBook/New52'' universal reboot, his character was RetGone for years. He was teased to return in ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'' but [[AbortedArc the idea was aborted when the book got a new creative team]]. He would only be brought back fully in 2021 on the ''ComicBook/Robin2021'' series.
* CallingTheOldManOut: He's heavily annoyed by his father's horrible parenting skills and has more than once called him out for his terrible behavior as a father and a hero.
* CelibateHero: Is uncomfortable with women due to being raised by monks and tends to avoid romantic relationships for this reason.
* ChickMagnet: Despite being a CelibateHero, he gets hit on by women pretty often, to the point that {{Chick Magnet}}s Wally West and Kyle Rayner are jealous!
* CommonalityConnection:
** He and Kyle Rayner
have fought together on occasion.bonded over their shared struggle of not knowing their fathers and being racial minorities in America.
** He and [[Characters/RobinDamianWayne Damian Wayne]] bond over having absentee superhero fathers with similar methods and equipment.
* CompositeCharacter: In the ''ComicBook/New52'' continuity, Connor Hawke is the Red Arrow of Earth 2 rather than Green Arrow.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: A lot of his backstory and personality traits were created to mirror his father Oliver Queen, the first Green Arrow:
** Ollie was a rich kid who [[RichKidTurnedSocialActivist became a social activist]] and a BadassNormal superhero who was devoted to doing the right thing and helping the poor. Connor only had a StrugglingSingleMother who couldn't support him, so he was raised in an ashram and spent his life studying to become a humble monk.

* ActionPolitician: During ''ComicBook/OneYearLater'', he became the mayor of Star City to help the city through ** Ollie is a crisis. And while he stopped being Green Arrow, he was still a BadassNormal loud-mouthed and would still use the government resources to personally lead showy figure who had a local SWAT team to fight crime.
* ActionSurvivor: His origin story has him being trapped on an island while he was an IdleRich. The details tend to vary, but [[TookALevelInBadass most
sort of the skills that he uses as Green Arrow were self-taught in there]] as he struggled to survive with only a bow pig-headed stubbornness and arrow.
* AnnoyingArrows: The meta reason that Oliver created his {{Trick Arrow}}s
cocky air about him. Connor is to avoid this trope, most famously his boxing glove arrows.
Some of his DarkerAndEdgier stories have him adopt a
much more cold humble and ruthless persona that is associated with archers.
* ARealManIsAKiller: While Oliver doesn't necessarily believe that killing is a passage into manhood, he certainly believes that the moment he stopped being a [[SpoiledBrat spoiled socialite]] with [[IdleRich no direction in life]] happened after he took his first human life.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: He becomes the Mayor of Star City in the ''ComicBook/OneYearLater'' storyline,
reserved, and uses his authority to personally lead a SWAT team.
He's just good
had difficulty coping with the bow stardom and larger-than-life aspects of being a superhero.
** Ollie is a [[TheCasanova notorious womanizer]] and SexGod whose libido was fairly infamous among super-heroes
and has lots and lots of {{Trick Arrow}}s.
* BashBrothers: He gets paired often
a long complicated history with [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]], being once of DC's most iconic hero duos with their VitriolicBestBuds relationship. The fact they're both Green {{Color Character}}s is just a bonus.
* BattleCouple: He and
his [[OfficialCouple main love interest]] ComicBook/BlackCanary form one of the most well-known SuperHero couples in the medium who he frequently forms a BattleCouple with. Meanwhile, Connor is an Asexual ChickMagnet who is deeply uncomfortable around women due to his upbringing and have often shared the same book, most famously the one simply called gets visibly uneasy when being hit on.
* ConvenientComa: During
''Green Arrow/Black Arrow & Black Canary'', where they fought crime side by side. Though their relationship has been a turbulent affair due to his many faults.
* BeardnessProtectionProgram: In Creator/MikeGrell's run on Green Arrow,
he shaves his iconic beard and gets a haircut while he's on spent the run.
* {{Blackmail}}: In the New 52, he became part
majority of the new JLA assembled by [[Characters/SuicideSquadSupportStaff Amanda Waller]].
This is {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d
run in issue #1 of ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'' when Ollie takes Dinah back to his place and she's baffled to see how well off he is.
-->'''Dinah:''' You call yourself
a social justice warrior, but look at this apartment.
* CameBackWrong: He ended up being TheSoulless for a while
comatose state after being brought BackFromTheDead poisoned by Parallax, but he eventually got his soul back.
* TheCasanova: He was a famous womanizing in his MillionairePlayboy days, but how much this trait still persists after his CharacterDevelopment can vary DependingOnTheWriter. He's often still TheCharmer and a ChivalrousPervert. Most of
the time he still has a steadfast devotion to his LoveInterest ComicBook/BlackCanary, but some controversial storylines had him cheating on her.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He was originally and for a long time after his introduction mild-mannered and apolitical - essentially a better adjusted equivalent to [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman]], at a time
[[Characters/BatmanLeagueOfAssassins League of Assassins]]. Even when even Batman he woke up, he was more prone to smiling than his current incarnation. His left-wing politics NotHimself and spikier personality generally only became part detached from many of his character in the late Sixties, nearly three decades after the character's introduction.
* DefectorFromParadise: The titular character was resurrected without a soul, as well as any
memories of his past during his [[DarkerandEdgier more cynical]] years. He seemed to get along fine without it and his soul rested peacefully in Heaven. However, his lack of a soul made him [[DemonicPossession a gateway for possession by powerful demons]], which would be a very bad thing for the entire world. He eventually convinced his soul (still in Heaven at emotions, even forgetting how to use a bow, and he was PutOnABus by returning to the time) Ashram where he had been raised in order to come back to his body to save his son from being killed by demonic conjurers.

His skin color tends to "[[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk world-class asshole]]"), and whether or not vary a lot. Sometimes he's the sort of man to [[ParentalAbandonment abandon black, sometimes he's AmbiguouslyBrown and sometimes he's Caucasian white just like his illegitimate child]].

* DependingOnTheWriter:
His OfficialCouple relationship with Dinah Lance/Black Canary. Either they are one of the most loving, passionate {{Battle Couple}}s asexuality. It was potentially implied in Franchise/TheDCU who have [[SlapSlapKiss had a few bumps but worked through it]], or they are a [[TheMasochismTango toxic his earlier appearances and mutually abusive mess who treat each other horribly]]. It happens frequently enough that shippers have blamed as a mix of himself and his religious upbringing. Then a certain writer retconned him into kissing a woman whom he believed to ignore significant portions be his mother. Seemingly his asexuality is back as of their history together.
''Rebirth''.
* ExpressiveMask: His [[IrislessEyeMaskOfMystery Irisless]] DominoMask can move depending on what he's doing with

father, he took up wearing one as part of his SuperHero version of Myth/RobinHood, with the ArcherArchetype, [[ColorMotif green color scheme]], RichesToRags backstory, [[TheCasanova womanizing]] and ChivalrousPervert personalities and champions to the lower classes. Most specifically, his creator Creator/MortWeisinger was first inspired by another Myth/RobinHood expy, The Green Archer from a series of books and films by Creator/EdgarWallace.
** In a rare case of evolving into another Expy, Green Arrow and Speedy were transformed into archery-themed versions of ComicBook/{{Batman}} and ComicBook/{{Robin}} in [[UsefulNotes/TheSilverAgeOfComicBooks The Silver Age]]
after starting out as an AdventurerArchaeologist and [[KidHero Boy Adventurer]] respectively in [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks The Golden Age]]. Decades of DivergentCharacterEvolution (and teen sidekicks becoming standard for a DC hero) have turned Loliver from straight-up "Batman but the second Green Arrow.
* FriendlyRivalry: Forms one
with arrows!" to his own person Damian Wayne in ''ComicBook/Robin2021'', where they both compete in the Lazarus Tournament, but he was very much the same character once.
After losing all his money he lost the one thing that made him happy, and tried to compensate for it by gaining the love of the masses as a
they bond over [[CommonalityConnection their absent hero for the poor fathers]] and downtrodden of society.
* TheGimmick: Being a MasterArcher SuperHero with {{Trick Arrow}}s and Myth/RobinHood comparisons.
* GoodIsNotNice: {{Deconstruction}}. While Oliver is
they ultimately a force for good, he has never been particularly nice about it. His relationship with his friends, family and team up to bring the superhero community is strained, with him constantly cheating on his long time girlfriend ComicBook/BlackCanary (Dinah Lance), neglecting his sidekick and ward Speedy I/Arsenal/Red Arrow I (Roy Harper), abandoning his biological son Green Arrow II (Connor Hawke) at birth and lying to Connor that he did not know he was his son when they met and Connor became his sidekick.

* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He's a Shares his father's blonde who's famous for his charming personality hair and is a genuine pacifist NiceGuy.
* HealingFactor: After being brought to a ConvenientComa and becoming a guinea pig to Doctor Sivana, he gained an accelerated healing factor and a heightened resistance to pain.
* HeroicBastard: He is the son of Oliver Queen (one of ''several'')
and his dedication to help the poor and innocent.
* HandicappedBadass:
former girlfriend Sandra "Moonday" Hawke. Oliver Queen's appearance in Frank Miller's ''ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns'' story--he may be old, and without an arm, but he can still shoot arrows just fine.
* HandsOffParenting:
** This is what he amounted to when he took in Roy Harper. While they spent plenty of time fighting bad guys together,
walked out of costume Ollie had barely any presence in Roy's life and was pretty oblivious to what was going on with him, including the crippling sense of abandonment and loneliness building up inside Roy that led to his heroin addiction.
** Ollie is also this in "Hard-Traveling Heroes", much to the ire of his son Connor.
* HandsomeLech: He has a history of being a philanderer, which was especially problematic
him when he was in a relationship with ComicBook/BlackCanary.
While Oliver was a rebellious, radical VigilanteMan who believes in sticking it to the man and helping people even [[ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight if he has to go against the law]], which contrasts with Hal who was a straight-laced, by-the-book SpacePolice who has great faith
baby, but that the system will always be there to help anyone in need.
He'll eventually do the right thing (operative word being "eventually"), but not without lots of self-aggrandizing gloating, probably fucking one of his side pieces behind Dinah's back, probably making a bunch of promises to his allies that he drops the ball on delivering, definitely making a bunch of promises to Roy and/or
didn't stop Connor that he drops the ball on delivering, for wanting to follow in his father's footsteps and generally just being becoming a massive douche.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: He's a [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower self-trained]]
SuperHero whose [[TheGimmick gimmick]] is being a MasterArcher. Oliver himself like him.
* HumbleHero: He
has boasted the humility that he never misses, one would expect for someone raised as a WarriorMonk, and he has been shown to make some impossible shots such as hitting targets without directly looking at them, hitting a drop of water coming out of a faucet or being able to hit on target preserves that humility even while in midair or off balance. If it looks like when he missed then it's likely a case of him pulling an ExactlyWhatIAimedAt. They have, at times, been depicted as so implausibly good, some people [[EpilepticTrees theorize]] that they actually have psychokinesis and are simply using it to show off by making it look like they're takes on the world's greatest archers. The fact that the artists and writers mantle of their titles usually don't do very much research into how archers actually even ''hold'' their bows drives it home for a lot of people.
* InTheBlood: The ''ComicBook/New52'' adds this element to Oliver's backstory
Green Arrow, which is in regards rather [[ContrastingSequelMainCharacter stark contrast to his MasterArcher skills, revealing his family comes from a long line of archers, dad's boasting and is descended from the Arrow Clan.
boisterous nature]].
* InTheHood: He wore Tends to use a hood as part of in his SuperHero hero costume during the Creator/MikeGrell series ''The Longbow Hunters'' and the following ''Green Arrow'' monthly series (1980s and 1990s run). ComicBook/BlackCanary designed it for him so he wouldn't catch a chill in Seattle's rainy clime. Since he had abandoned his [[TrickArrow trick and gadget arrows]] for broadheads instead, it was a better fit for a [[DarkerAndEdgier darker and grittier]] Green Arrow much more often than the old "Robin Hood" hat from [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks the Golden Age]]. Initially he still wore his DominoMask underneath the hood, but after enough people explain that they already know who he is, he gives up the mask and wears only the hood. DependingOnTheArtist, it still hid the face--it was the beard that defeated the whole purpose of it all.father does.

* JerkAss: Ollie has had his moments which range in the many, from being a self-important moralist, to a morally ambiguous AntiHero to an outright douchebag throughout his career.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite his snarky attitude and general smugness, few would dispute that Oliver Queen's heart is in the right place regardless of where his head might be stuck.
* JustLikeRobinHood: He does this DependingOnTheWriter. Of course, Green Arrow also helps the poor through things like governmental power (he's been mayor of his {{Adventure Town|s}}) or business (anti-Big Business multi-millionaire fighter. Irony) and of course fighting crime.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Used as part of a training upgrade to (temporarily) defeat Deathstroke. Ultimately it was rejected by many fans, who could accept a JustLikeRobinHood hero using a sword... just not a Katana.
* LadykillerInLove: He's incredibly devoted to ComicBook/BlackCanary, despite his past as TheCasanova and his ChivalrousPervert persona.
* LaserGuidedKarma: {{Deconstruction}}. During the ''Cry for Justice'' & ''Rise and Fall'' storyline where Green Arrow I (Oliver Queen) murders Prometheus for destroying Star City and causing the death of his adopted granddaughter Lian Harper. During Oliver's capture and trial, his family washes their hands of him, with his wife Black Canary (Dinah Lance) returning her wedding ring and declaring their marriage over. His adopted son Speedy I/Arsenal/Red Arrow I (Roy Harper) and biological son Green Arrow II (Connor Hawke) tell him they are through with him. It is implied that Oliver killing Prometheus is the last straw, with Oliver constantly cheating on Dinah, his neglect of Roy, and his abandonment of Connor and lying that he did not know he was his son was the main cause of them leaving Oliver. However, before that storyline Oliver Queen works hard to repair his relationships with them, and they had forgiven him before. It is also implied that they had been traumatized by the events of the story, Star City being destroyed for Dinah, the lost of his daughter for Roy, Connor being in a coma and losing and regaining his memories, and with the resentment, they have for Oliver despite forgiving him, they all lash out at Oliver.
* LethalChef:
** "[[http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Green_Arrow%27s_Chili Ollie's Stupendous Chili Recipe]]" is [[BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce intolerably spicy]] for even ''Characters/{{Superman|TheCharacter}}''. Even with his vaunted willpower [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]] (one of Ollie's best friends) couldn't finish it. On the bright side, ComicBook/TheFlash was able to adapt it into a weapon for fighting Captain Cold. However, [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman]] is [[OnlyOneWhoLikesSpam able to eat it with a smile on his face]] and just go, "Hrm... it could use more crackers."
** ''ComicBook/TheFlashInfiniteFrontier'' reveals Ollie is equally bad at making coffee.
* LifeOrLimbDecision: After a HeroicSacrifice to thwart an eco-terrorist attack on Metropolis left his arm stuck in a bomb, he refused to allow Superman to amputate his arm, because he couldn't live with himself if could never use a bow again, so he ended up dying... [[DeathIsCheap for a while]].
* LongLostRelative: In the New 52 volume, he discovers that he has a younger Japanese half-sister named Emiko.
* LostAtSea: He was shipwrecked and stranded on a DesertedIsland for a significant amount of time in his backstory.
* LoveMakesYouStupid: He is very prone to making dumb decisions when loved ones are involved.
* MadeOfIron: Ollie is just a BadassNormal has survived getting diced up by super-assassin ComicBook/{{Deathstroke}}, hit with an RPG, and battered around by superpowered opponents like ComicBook/{{Hawkman}}.
* ManOfTheCity: He is this to his hometown of Star City, both as a crimefighter and a crusader for social reform. One arc even had him successfully running for Mayor in order to help the city rebuild after a major supervillain attack.
* TheMasochismTango: While his relationship with Dinah Lance/Black Canary often has a SlapSlapKiss dynamic, it has been interpreted as this DependingOnTheWriter, with her having problems with her relationship with Oliver. Oliver, despite wanting to make things right, keeps doing and saying the wrong things. At times, you wonder why they are even still together.
* MasterArcher: He is most definitely the Franchise/TheDCU's best archer, and has trained many younger characters to follow in his footsteps. His first origin story was that of an archaeologist who studied Native American fighting techniques before it was retconned into getting stranded on a deserted island and teaching himself archery to survive. The end result is a [[ImprobableAimingSkills nigh-superhuman ability at shooting arrows]] that strikes fear in the hearts of supervillains and allows him to keep up with his superpowered peers.
* MasterSwordsman: After ''ComicBook/InfiniteCrisis'' Oliver started to train with swords and became quite skilled with it and has even shown to be able to [[ParryingBullets deflect arrows directed at him with his sword]].
* MillionairePlayboy: Oliver Queen, for much of his history. When his fortune was stolen from him in the 1970s, it fully completed his shift to the liberal man of the people. He's regained money lately, but as the head of a number of charities.
* MistakenForCheating: At one point, when Dinah is teaming up with Ray Terrill (ComicBook/TheRay), Oliver gets jealous and accuses her of cradle robbing, especially since Ray seems to have a crush on her. Dinah responds by kissing Ollie...and then when Ray leaves, [[KissKissSlap punching him]].
* MistakenForSuperpowered: A few characters have even speculated InUniverse that his ImprobableAimingSkills might be a metahuman ability that activated when he got stranded on the deserted island, but he's actually just a BadassNormal who developed his MasterArcher skills via [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower training]].
* MoneyDumb: DependingOnTheWriter, due to being a MillionairePlayboy for most of his life, he's portrayed as being very bad with finance and spends way outside his means during stories where he goes from RichesToRags.
* MrFanservice: He's often depicted as a handsome man with a {{Hunk}} physique and has gotten his fair share of {{Shirtless Scene}}s over many continuities. In ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'', Ollie's good looks are perhaps emphasized more here than they've ever been. Otto Schmidt, a pinup artist, especially draws Ollie in this way.
* {{Multishot}}: Par for the course for a MasterArcher, he can shoot multiple arrows at once, and with deadly accuracy.
* MyGreatestFailure: Modern stories tend to depict his handling of Roy's drug addiction as this. While, at the time, he handled it ''very'' badly, he himself didn't think so. Modern stories depict him as feeling guilty about his bad parenting of Roy driving him to drugs, as well as his failure to manage it as a big regret of his.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Ollie's ''ComicBook/New52'' backstory has this, too. He was holding a party on a Queen Industries oil rig that was taken hostage by a mad bomber. He first picked up the bow and arrow in an effort to take the guy out without risking anyone's death... and ended up setting off his explosives, killing nearly everyone else on the rig (including his girlfriend) and getting blown out to sea by the blast, where he washed up on the familiar desert island.
* NobleShoplifter: In ''City Walls'', although the city is without power and looting is rampant, Green Arrow insists that his people leave payment whenever they take food or weapons from a store.
* NonIdleRich: Oliver comes from a rich family and used to be a MillionairePlayboy, but after his origins story, he began to dedicate himself and his money towards crime-fighting.
* NonPoweredCostumedHero: He's a SuperHero who wears a Myth/RobinHood-themed green costume and is a BadassNormal that fights crime with [[TheStraightAndArrowPath just a bow]]. The closest thing he has to supernatural powers are his {{Trick Arrow}}s.
* NotWearingTights: During the Creator/MikeGrell run, he rarely used his SuperHero uniform.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: He sometimes had had to use his teeth to draw back his bowstring, mainly if he has one arm immobilized.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He sometimes still acts as a MillionairePlayboy in his civilian persona in order to hide the fact he's actually a SuperHero with a SecretIdentity.
* OfficialCouple: With ComicBook/BlackCanary. While they're often on a RelationshipRevolvingDoor, they're have still always been each other's only LoveInterest that was treated as a serious relationship.
* OneManArmy: Courtesy of his extremely high-level skills in ranged and melee combat, Oliver is capable of fighting off large numbers of people singlehandedly.
* OneNoteCook: Ollie makes a mean bowl of chili.
* PapaWolf: While he might have had many issues as a parental figure, he's still incredibly protective of his children. The man walked out of Paradise to save his son's life.
* ParentalAbandonment: During his time as a MillionairePlayboy, he impregnated Sandra Hawke but was dismissive of her, thinking she was only a GoldDigger that was pulling a BabyTrap on him, forcing Sandra to raise the young Connor until she also eventually left him to be raised at the Ashram Monastery. Oliver would come to regret his decision when he met his estranged son, years later.
* ParentalNeglect:
** DependingOnTheWriter, he has been a distant father figure to his biological son Connor Hawke and to his KidSidekick Roy Harper, whom he's supposed to be a ParentalSubstitute for. According to Brad Meltzer, he was present at Connor's birth but ducked out on actually having to raise him and he stopped being there for Roy for a month, which led to his infamous drug habit. In ''Fall Of The Green Arrow,'' both of them turn him away when he asks for their help, calling him out on his selfish behavior toward them.
** {{Flashback}}s in the Third Volume of Ollie's book implied that Ollie and his mother were similarly ignored by his father, despite being taken care of financially.
* ParentalSubstitute: To his sidekicks, Roy and Mia.
* PermaStubble: In the ''ComicBook/New52'' he goes for this look instead, thereby bypassing the ClarkKenting problem of his SecretIdentity.
* {{Protectorate}}: His hometown of Star City is the place he's sworn to protect, and even uses his influence as Oliver Queen to try to make it a better place. He even got into politics once and got elected mayor.
* ReallyGetsAround: Oliver Queen has a mostly undeserved reputation for having trouble keeping his arrow in his quiver. While it is true that Oliver was every bit the player [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Bruce Wayne]] pretends to be before becoming a superhero, he was characterized as being downright devout and at times [[CrazyJealousGuy downright possessive]] regarding then-girlfriend Black Canary throughout the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics. His characterization as [[TheCasanova a womanizer]] didn't begin until shortly after his death in the mid-1990s and he never cheated on Black Canary until Creator/JuddWinick started writing the character.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: During the ''Cry for Justice'' & ''Rise and Fall'' storyline, where Green Arrow I (Oliver Queen) murders Prometheus for destroying Star City and causing the death of his adopted granddaughter Lian Harper, both his wife Black Canary (Dinah Lance) and adopted son Speedy I/Arsenal/Red Arrow I (Roy Harper) cut ties with Oliver, both telling him they're done with him.
** In ''Green Arrow'' #32, Dinah calls him out for all the problems he caused and driving her away:
--> '''Dinah Lance:''' Stop. I said Stop. Ollie, I didn't come here for any answers or explanations. And I certainly didn't come for any more of your apologies. You've always found a way to put things between us. Now, this glass is making it literally true.\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' What are you talking about?\\
'''Dinah Lance:''' I'm talking about you, Ollie. The way you always managed to find some way to mess it all up.\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' That's crazy.\\
'''Dinah Lance:''' It goes back to our days in Seattle. We were perfectly happy— so you started talking about getting married and having a family. You let me feel guilty for not wanting to have children. Then ashamed for not being able to. But the truth is—you never wanted to be a father. You ran out on Connor the day he was born. When that whore of an assassin Shado told you about your other son, Robert, you didn't seem interested there either. Face it, Ollie. Lying about this was just another wedge to drive me away.\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' It wasn't like that, Dinah. I... I killed somebody. Don't you realize that? I murdered Prometheus. I crossed a line, and I can never take it back.\\
'''Dinah Lance:''' Please. You crossed that line a long time ago, Ollie. It's old hat. But I know something you can take back.\\
''[Dinah put down her wedding ring.]''\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' Dinah no.\\
'''Dinah Lance:''' I can't. Out on the streets, I never give up. I never quit. But I can't fight this— not anymore. Deep down, you always wanted to be alone. Congratulations, Ollie. You win.\\
''[Dinah leaves and Oliver looks at her wedding ring.]''
** In ''Justice League: The Rise of Arsenal'' #2, Roy calls Oliver out on being a bad father to him:
-->'''Roy Harper:''' Are you friggin' kidding me? You're in jail—big deal. Look at me, Ollie. Look at Me! I lost my arm. Prometheus maimed me, but none of it even registers because she's gone. Lian's dead My… My… …My little girl.\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' I know, Roy. I'm so sorry. I'd do anything to bring her back anything. I tried to make it right— make him pay. But killing Prometheus didn't change a thing.\\
'''Roy Harper:''' Maybe for you. But it would have changed everything for me. Getting back at Prometheus was the only thing I had left anymore. He took my arm. He took Lian. But you took my revenge from me, Ollie. What now? You tell me. What am I supposed to do now?\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' The same thing we always have— you keep going. It's all we can do. I might be behind bars, but that doesn't mean I won't be here for you.\\
'''Roy Harper:''' Seriously? You're here for me? Ollie, you've never been there for me. Maybe when it was convenient for you, but never when it really mattered. It's the same with me as it is with Connor, or even Mia for that matter. You're no father— you just like to pretend you are from time to time. And that's why you'll never understand what I'm going though right now. You don't know what it's like to be a father— to really be a father.\\
'''Oliver Queen:''' Roy, listen—\\
'''Roy Harper:''' Listen? To what? You can't help me Ollie. You can't even help yourself.
* RedBaron: The ''Emerald Archer''.
* RedBoxingGloves: (In)famously uses these as part of his {{Trick Arrow}} arsenal.
* {{RetCanon}}: The success of ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' has led to several aspects of the show being introduced to his character:
** The idea that Oliver was stranded on the island for years, and that the island, far from being deserted, was the site of a conspiracy that Oliver gets involved with.
** Oliver's parents, Moira and Robert Queen, who were never particularly important in the comics, become [[AscendedExtra more important]], following on from their portrayals on the show. In particular, the latter is [[spoiler:significantly involved in Green Arrow's origin]], much like on the show.
* RetGone: The [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks Golden Age]] Green Arrow and Speedy "never existed" in the new Earth history post-ComicBook/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths. This has caused some problems for the ComicBook/SevenSoldiersOfVictory continuity when it's referenced — until the ''Stargirl Spring Break Special'' restored them to the team's history via saying Ollie and Roy were sent back in time during a battle with the Clock King.
* RichesToRags: Happens to him in the first arc of ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'', where his fortune is stolen by a conspiracy of [[SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil slavers]], [[CorruptCorporateExecutive ruthless business executives]] , and [[MorallyBankruptBanker bankers]]. For elaborate reasons Ollie ends up destroying his fortune instead of reclaiming it. [[StatusQuoIsGod He does reclaim it at the end of the run]]
* RichKidTurnedSocialActivist: Started off as, at best, a "limousine liberal" until writer Dennis O'Neil introduced a storyline in which Oliver Queen [[RichesToRags lost his fortune]]. A few nights on the street dealing with the social services net from the bottom radically altered Green Arrow's politics, leading to him becoming an outspoken champion of the poor and oppressed, as a cross between Robin Hood and Abbie Hoffman.
* RocketPunch: The most infamous of his TrickArrow is the boxing glove arrows, which basically function like a rocket punch. It mostly exists to prevent AnnoyingArrows and for RuleOfFunny.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: He's a VigilanteMan who doesn't like rules or laws get in the way of him helping people.
* SecretIdentity: He has gone back and forth on whether or not he has one or doesn't have one. It's hinted in in some continuities that his secret identity isn't really [[EverybodyKnewAlready all that secret]] and most people are just polite enough to not bring it up. The goatee probably doesn't help.
** Originally, he had one until about mid-way through the Creator/MikeGrell run, when he was outed by the United States government after being framed for espionage. After [[HeroicSacrifice sacrificing himself]] to save the city of Metropolis, he was given a full-page obituary on the front page of The Daily Planet, which identified Oliver Queen as Green Arrow. This was used as proof of Oliver's death in ''Green Arrow: Quiver'', when [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman]] was trying to prove to the clone Ollie that he was/had been dead.
** After Creator/JuddWinick took over the series post-''Green Arrow: Quiver'', Oliver Queen suddenly had a secret identity again. No explanation was given for why Oliver Queen suddenly showed up in Star City again at the same time the original Green Arrow returned and nobody - except for Mia Dearden - made the connection.
** Oliver's secret identity was outed AGAIN, following ''Cry For Justice'', just before he was put on trial for the murder of Prometheus.
** As of September 2011, he has a secret identity. AGAIN.
* SexGod: His relationship with Dinah Lance / ComicBook/BlackCanary has been a tumultuous one, with many of his flaws often driving Dinah nuts, but one thing she never complains about is bedroom prowess, as Oliver has consistently been portrayed as a satisfying and selfless lover. To the point it's a RunningGag that he gets her to release [[TheImmodestOrgasm loud sonic orgasms]] and she once quipped that him talking is her least favorite use for his mouth. DC writer Creator/Kevin Smith once joked that "Oliver Queen just knows how to make the ladies quiver. Especially when he hits the bullseye."
* SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil: As a [[JustLikeRobinHood modern-day Robin Hood]], Green Arrow is frequently depicted as believing this. In the ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'' books, the fact that The Ninth Circle abducts homeless people and sells them off to the highest bidder angers Green Arrow far more than their attempts to kill him and frame his secret identity for murder.
* SleevesAreForWimps: His costume is generally sleeveless, though he has arm guards and gauntlets.
* TheSoulless: When he was first brought BackFromTheDead by Parallax, he [[CameBackWrong resurrected without a soul]], as well as any memories of his past during his DarkerAndEdgier years. He seemed to get along fine without it (the lack of memories made him cheerier, if anything), but his lack of a soul made him very vulnerable to DemonicPossession, which would be a very bad thing for the whole world. He eventually convinced his soul (still in Heaven at the time) to come back to his body.
* SmugStraightEdge: Oliver had a very negative view of drug dealers and users, and like many other BadassNormal, thought himself better than they were for staying straight. Then his KidSidekick Speedy started doing Heroin. The ensuing confrontation went... badly and Oliver more or less abandoned Roy, who had to get help from other people. Later a {{Retcon}} in the ''Green Arrow: Year One'' mini-series gave Oliver some motivation for this attitude, other than misdirected anger at himself for neglecting his sidekick - he had been injured while defending the enslaved population of a tropical island turned drug-farm and the only painkiller available to the woman who treated his wounds was heroin. Ollie just barely survived the withdrawal, which left him wondering how anyone could willingly subject themselves to such an experience.
* StockSuperheroDayJobs: Oliver is of the RichKidTurnedSocialActivist variety and tends to use his money to [[CrimefightingWithCash try to help Star City]].
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: Oliver Queen is one of the most famous archer {{Super Hero}}es and a TropeCodifier to many things associated with them, suck as the {{Trick Arrow}}s.
* StrawCharacter: DependingOnTheWriter, he's a pure [[StrawmanPolitical Straw Liberal]], constantly getting on everyone else's case for making compromises and not doing more to help those around the world stuck in dire circumstances while often failing to practice what he preaches.
* SuperheroesStaySingle: He and his [[OfficialCouple Official]] LoveInterest ComicBook/BlackCanary ''tried'' to avert this when they tried to get married but the Creator/MikeGrell era signaled the end of their relationship. Their 2007 marriage proved to be unpopular and was quickly ended by the events of ''ComicBook/JusticeLeagueCryForJustice''. They've been on a RelationshipRevolvingDoor ever since.
* SupernaturallyYoungParent: Oliver barely aged a day since TheSeventies, despite Roy Harper and Connor Hawke both obviously growing up and visibly aging, with Roy even having a kid of his own.
* TaughtByExperience: In some versions of Green Arrow's origin, he develops his incredible archery as a result of being stranded on a desert island and having to learn how to use a bow in order to survive.
* {{Thememobile}}: The Arrowcar, a customized car with a light arrow motif that he used in some of his earlier and goofiest stories.
* ThickerThanWater: In the original storyline where Connor Hawke was revealed to be Oliver Queen's long-lost son, Oliver didn't take the news well since Connor had concealed the fact from him and the only reason Ollie found out was that a Parallax-possessed [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]] accidentally mentioned the fact. Granting that Ollie's paranoia was somewhat-justified (he was a wanted man at the time), and FriendsAreChosenFamilyArent, but Ollie's desire to abandon his son was treated like a grievous flaw.
* ThouShallNotKill:
** Ollie was originally very against killing and it's why he uses so many {{trick arrow}}s, like the infamous boxing glove arrow, instead of actual arrows. During the O'Neil/Adams run, Ollie [[AccidentalMurder accidentally killed someone]] because his aim was thrown off by an injury. [[TenMinuteRetirement He gave up the superhero life and went to a monastery until Green Lantern and others convinced him to return]]. He famously made an exception for Prometheus after the latter attacked Star City with a KillSat and killed thousands, including his granddaughter Lian Harper.
** {{Averted|Trope}} during Creator/MikeGrell's run, where Green Arrow began using lethal force regularly after killing a man who was torturing ComicBook/BlackCanary. The series flip-flopped on how he felt about killing, sometimes doing it casually and other times feeling remorseful about it. Once his series ended, the events and characterization have been ignored.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** His time on the island graduated him from a MillionairePlayboy to a BadassNormal MasterArcher with ImprobableAimingSkills.
** After the events of ''ComicBook/OneYearLater'', he felt his close combat skills were subpar and took lessons in martial arts and sword-fighting, which started Green Arrows' depictions of him with a BowAndSwordInAccord.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Ollie really, ''really'' likes chili, which is apparently due to his mother making it for him often as a child. He famously has a chili recipe that he loves but most other characters find it far too spicy.
* TrickArrow: The {{Trope Maker|s}}. Oliver has a wide variety of specialized arrows that he designed and created himself (or with his company's money). They range from {{EMP}}, [[ArrowsOnFire explosives]], [[PoisonedWeapons poisoned]], [[BlindedByTheLight flash grenades]], [[GrapplingHookPistol grappling]], [[StickySituation glue]], [[HarmlessFreezing ice]] and more. He can develop incredibly specific arrows to fight specific individuals, such as a Kryptonite arrow for Kryptonians.
* TwangHello: A frequent method of greeting for Oliver Queen.
* VigilanteMan: Oliver usually has little faith in the system, so as Green Arrow he works outside the law in order to combat crime and injustice.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
** With [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan/Green Lantern]] since when they teamed up in a series of socially relevant stories in which the "by-the-book" Hal and "plays by his own rules" Ollie deal with issues like racism, political corruption, pollution, and overpopulation.
** He and ComicBook/{{Hawkman}} have a famously HeadbuttingHeroes relationship, but once when they both been [[BackFromTheDead brought back to life]], meet up at the Justice Society brownstone. Everyone else feared a fight will break out, only to find the two laughing hysterically over [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman]] impersonations and [[FriendshipMoment admitting that they missed each other]].
%%** Sometimes with Barry Allen, Franchise/TheFlash.
%%** And once with the post-Crisis ComicBook/TheQuestion.

to:

* JerkAss: Ollie has had LamarckWasRight: {{Averted|Trope}}, in that while Connor is a competent enough archer after years of training with monks as a boy, he is nowhere near the savant Oliver Queen is with a bow. He is a great martial artist, though.
* LegacyCharacter: With
his moments which range father dead in the many, from being a self-important moralist, 90s, Connor decided to a morally ambiguous AntiHero to an outright douchebag throughout take up the mantle of Green Arrow and continue his career.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite his snarky attitude
hero's work and general smugness, few would dispute that became the second Green Arrow. Even when Oliver Queen's heart is came BackFromTheDead, they both stayed as Green Arrow for a time, and worked as partners in a ParentChildTeam.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Connor reveals to Ollie he's his son some time after they traveled together. Ollie reacts... poorly.
* MadeOfIron: One story arc had him surviving being ''shot
in the right place regardless of where head'' by the villain Onomatopeia, and while he was seriously injured, he quickly made a full recovery.
* MartialPacifist: He's a fearsome WarriorMonk, but
his head might be stuck.martial art skills also taught him how to value life and to avoid violence unless necessary.
* LethalChef:
His first origin story was that of an archaeologist who As a WarriorMonk, Connor studied Native American fighting techniques before it was retconned into getting stranded on a deserted island and teaching himself archery to survive. The end result is a [[ImprobableAimingSkills nigh-superhuman ability at shooting arrows]] that strikes fear in the hearts Kyudo Discipline style of supervillains and allows him to keep up with his superpowered peers.
* MasterSwordsman: After ''ComicBook/InfiniteCrisis'' Oliver started to train with swords and became quite
archery. He's not as skilled with it the bow as his father and most Team Arrow members but has even still shown to be able to [[ParryingBullets deflect arrows directed at him with his sword]].
* MillionairePlayboy: Oliver Queen, for much of his history. When his fortune was stolen from him in the 1970s, it fully completed his shift to the liberal man of the people. He's regained money lately, but as the head of a number of charities.
* MistakenForCheating: At one point, when Dinah is teaming up with Ray Terrill (ComicBook/TheRay), Oliver gets jealous and accuses her of cradle robbing, especially since Ray seems to

* MistakenForSuperpowered: A few characters have even speculated InUniverse that his

%%* MrFanservice
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Connor's zen training as a WarriorMonk endowed him with the gift of vision, which sometimes allows him to sense supernatural occurrences, such as getting a vision when his father was brought BackFromTheDead.

* NomDeMom: Hawke is his mother's surname, which he uses due to Oliver walking out on him

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Connor was so angry at Ollie for murdering Prometheus that he essentially severed all ties with
the deserted island, entire family, only returning for Lian's funeral but doing nothing to help Dinah, Mia or Roy before disappearing from their lives.
** In the ''ComicBook/Robin2021'' run, readers familiar with him know that Connor Hawke is the last person to be murdering people. It's the ''why'' of it that is the question. However, for the actual characters, they don't know who Connor is, so
he's actually just a BadassNormal who developed his MasterArcher skills via [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower training]].
* MoneyDumb: DependingOnTheWriter, due
mysterious assassin to being them.
* OnlySaneMan: He can sometimes seem like this in

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere:

* RedBaron: The ''Emerald Archer''.
In particular, the latter
how ''pissed'' he is [[spoiler:significantly involved in Green Arrow's origin]], much like on the show.
* RetGone: The [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks Golden Age]] Green Arrow and Speedy "never existed" in the new Earth history post-ComicBook/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths. This has caused some problems for the ComicBook/SevenSoldiersOfVictory continuity when it's referenced — until the ''Stargirl Spring Break Special'' restored them to the team's history via saying
at Ollie and Roy were sent back in time during a battle with the Clock King.
* RichesToRags: Happens
to him in the first arc of ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'', where his fortune is stolen by a conspiracy of [[SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil slavers]], [[CorruptCorporateExecutive ruthless business executives]] , and [[MorallyBankruptBanker bankers]]. For elaborate reasons Ollie ends up destroying his fortune instead of reclaiming it. [[StatusQuoIsGod He does reclaim it at the end of the run]]
functionally cut everyone else out.
* RichKidTurnedSocialActivist: Started off as, at best, a "limousine liberal" until writer Dennis O'Neil introduced a storyline TheStraightAndArrowPath: A variant in which Oliver Queen [[RichesToRags lost his fortune]]. A few nights on the street dealing with the social services net from the bottom radically altered Green Arrow's politics, leading to him becoming an outspoken champion of the poor and oppressed, as a cross between Robin Hood and Abbie Hoffman.
* RocketPunch: The most infamous of his TrickArrow
archer SuperHero is the boxing glove arrows, which basically function like a rocket punch.
To the point it's a RunningGag that he gets her to release [[TheImmodestOrgasm loud sonic orgasms]] and she once quipped that him talking is her least favorite use
actually more famous for his mouth. DC writer Creator/Kevin Smith once joked that "Oliver Queen just knows how to make skills in close quarters combat, as Connor is one of the ladies quiver. Especially when he hits best martial artists in the bullseye."
Franchise/TheDCU.
* SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil: ThouShallNotKill: As a [[JustLikeRobinHood modern-day Robin Hood]], Green WarriorMonk, Connor is by far the biggest adherent to this way of thinking, as he was raised as a BadassPacifist who values all life. He often acts as a MoralityChain to other Team Arrow is frequently depicted as believing this. In the ''ComicBook/GreenArrowRebirth'' books, the fact that The Ninth Circle abducts homeless people and sells them off members when they become willing to the highest bidder angers Green Arrow far more than their attempts to kill him and frame his secret identity for murder.use deadly force.
* ThouShallNotKill:
* TookALevelInBadass:
Oliver has As a wide variety of specialized successor to Green Arrow, he attempted to incorporate the trick arrows that he designed and created himself (or with his company's money).

->'''Debut:''' ''ComicBook/GreenArrow'' (Vol 2) #0

->''"I'm not giving up on him. I don't care if he's a jerk or a traitor or whatever. It's taken all this time to find him and I'm not giving up on my father."''

Connor Hawke is the biological son of Oliver Queen and Sandra "Moonday" Hawke.
* AffirmativeActionLegacy: His father's multiracial successor as the second Green Arrow.
* BashBrothers: Much like how his father Oliver often teamed up with [[Characters/GreenLanternHalJordan Hal Jordan]], Connor would also end up teaming up often with successor Green Lanter Kyle Rayner.
* TheBusCameBack: After the ''ComicBook/New52'' universal reboot, his character was RetGone for years.
* CommonalityConnection:
** He and Kyle Rayner have bonded over their shared struggle of not knowing their fathers and being racial minorities in America.
** Ollie is a loud-mouthed and showy figure who had a sort of pig-headed stubbornness and cocky air about him. Connor is much more humble and reserved, and had difficulty coping with the stardom and larger-than-life aspects of being a superhero.
** Ollie is a [[TheCasanova notorious womanizer]] and SexGod whose libido was fairly infamous among super-heroes and has a long complicated history with his [[OfficialCouple main love interest]] ComicBook/BlackCanary who he frequently forms a BattleCouple with. Meanwhile, Connor is an Asexual ChickMagnet who is deeply uncomfortable around women due to his upbringing and gets visibly uneasy when being hit on.
* ConvenientComa: During ''Green Arrow & Black Canary'', he spent the majority of the run in a comatose state after being poisoned by the [[Characters/BatmanLeagueOfAssassins League of Assassins]]. Even when he woke up, he was NotHimself and became detached from many of his memories and the emotions, even forgetting how to use a bow, and he was PutOnABus by returning to the Ashram where he had been raised in order to recover.
* DependingOnTheArtist: His skin color tends to vary a lot. Sometimes he's black, sometimes he's AmbiguouslyBrown and sometimes he's Caucasian white just like his father.
* DependingOnTheWriter: His asexuality. It was potentially implied in his earlier appearances and blamed as a mix of himself and his religious upbringing. Then a certain writer retconned him into kissing a woman whom he believed to be his mother. Seemingly his asexuality is back as of ''Rebirth''.
* DominoMask: Like his father, he took up wearing one as part of his SuperHero after becoming the second Green Arrow.
* FriendlyRivalry: Forms one with Damian Wayne in ''ComicBook/Robin2021'', where they both compete in the Lazarus Tournament, but they bond over [[CommonalityConnection their absent hero fathers]] and they ultimately team up to bring the whole tournament down.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Shares his father's blonde hair and is a genuine pacifist NiceGuy.
* HealingFactor: After being brought to a ConvenientComa and becoming a guinea pig to Doctor Sivana, he gained an accelerated healing factor and a heightened resistance to pain.
* HeroicBastard: He is the son of Oliver Queen (one of ''several'') and his former girlfriend Sandra "Moonday" Hawke. Oliver walked out on him when he was a baby, but that didn't stop Connor for wanting to follow in his father's footsteps and becoming a SuperHero like him.
* HumbleHero: He has the humility that one would expect for someone raised as a WarriorMonk, and preserves that humility even when he takes on the mantle of Green Arrow, which is in rather [[ContrastingSequelMainCharacter stark contrast to his dad's boasting and boisterous nature]].
* InTheHood: Tends to use a hood in his hero costume much more often than his father does.
* IrislessEyeMaskOfMystery: The DominoMask he usually wears completely covers his eyes.
* LamarckWasRight: {{Averted|Trope}}, in that while Connor is a competent enough archer after years of training with monks as a boy, he is nowhere near the savant Oliver Queen is with a bow. He is a great martial artist, though.
* LegacyCharacter: With his father dead in the 90s, Connor decided to take up the mantle of Green Arrow and continue his hero's work and became the second Green Arrow. Even when Oliver came BackFromTheDead, they both stayed as Green Arrow for a time, and worked as partners in a ParentChildTeam.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Connor reveals to Ollie he's his son some time after they traveled together. Ollie reacts... poorly.
* MadeOfIron: One story arc had him surviving being ''shot in the head'' by the villain Onomatopeia, and while he was seriously injured, he quickly made a full recovery.
* MartialPacifist: He's a fearsome WarriorMonk, but his martial art skills also taught him how to value life and to avoid violence unless necessary.
* MasterArcher: As a WarriorMonk, Connor studied the Kyudo Discipline style of archery. He's not as skilled with the bow as his father and most Team Arrow members but has still shown to have some ImprobableAimingSkills with a bow.
%%* MrFanservice
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Connor's zen training as a WarriorMonk endowed him with the gift of vision, which sometimes allows him to sense supernatural occurrences, such as getting a vision when his father was brought BackFromTheDead.
* NiceGuy: Contrasting with his father's JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
* NomDeMom: Hawke is his mother's surname, which he uses due to Oliver walking out on him when he was a baby.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Connor was so angry at Ollie for murdering Prometheus that he essentially severed all ties with the entire family, only returning for Lian's funeral but doing nothing to help Dinah, Mia or Roy before disappearing from their lives.
** In the ''ComicBook/Robin2021'' run, readers familiar with him know that Connor Hawke is the last person to be murdering people. It's the ''why'' of it that is the question. However, for the actual characters, they don't know who Connor is, so he's just a mysterious assassin to them.
* OnlySaneMan: He can sometimes seem like this in a household with his hot-tempered, impulsive father and the equally impulsive and hot-tempered Speedies.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father walked away from him when he was a baby and his mother left him to be raised in an Ashram monastery when he was a child.
* PutOnABus: As a member of Team Arrow he often returned to the Ashram he was raised in for one reason or another, as an excuse whenever a writer didn't want him around.
* RedOniBlueOni: He's been the Blue to Ollie's, Eddie's, Roy's, and [[ComicBook/GreenLantern Kyle Rayner's]] Reds.
* TheReliableOne: Often portrayed as this with the other Team Arrow members, with his calm demeanor contrasting to the others who are more HotBlooded and opinionated people and he often acts as TheConfidant and the one willing to listen and understand the issues of the others.

* TheStraightAndArrowPath: A variant in which the archer SuperHero is actually more famous for his skills in close quarters combat, as Connor is one of the best martial artists in the Franchise/TheDCU.
* ThouShallNotKill: As a WarriorMonk, Connor is by far the biggest adherent to this way of thinking, as he was raised as a BadassPacifist who values all life. He often acts as a MoralityChain to other Team Arrow members when they become willing to use deadly force.
* TrickArrow: As a successor to Green Arrow, he attempted to incorporate the trick arrows Ollie was famous for, but had difficulty using them due to finding them weighty and inconvenient. He later found more noble motivations, though. And in the most recent retellings of his origins (such as ''Green Arrow: Year One'' and his ComicBook/New52 incarnation) he always had a noble heart and a desire to help people.

This isn't portrayed as a result of his politics but rather a lapse in character - for that matter, "bleeding heart" attitudes towards drug users and other criminals is usually seen as a liberal thing. In fact, Oliver calling Hal out for his lack of sympathy to rioters is what triggers the entire run.

* StrawmanPolitical: In the "Snowbirds Don't Fly", the liberal Ollie is too disgusted at Roy's drug use to do more than punch him in the face and yell at him. The conservative Hal meanwhile helps Roy find a place to stay and aids him in kicking his heroin addiction.

* CoolCar: The "[[ThemeMobile Arrowcar]]" that was similar to Batman's [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Batman's]] "Batmobile". The Arrow-Car was introduced during the time when Green Arrow comics mostly followed a similar formula as Batman (sans the depth and tragedy). However, it was in use for many years and there were several versions of it, all with various upgrades and re-designs. After Oliver lost his fortune, the Arrow-Car became too expensive to keep and he decided to destroy it.it.
* CrazyJealousGuy: He frequently has a possessive attitude towards ComicBook/BlackCanary and is paranoid about any men getting close to her, much to her annoyance.

This eventually even led to her becoming pregnant and having a ChildByRape, Robert, as the result of the rape. Over the years, [[DependingOnTheWriter different writers]] on ''Green Arrow'' comics have subsequently taken different positions about whether the sex was consensual or not.
* RichIdiotWithNoDayJob: Used to just be a MillionairePlayboy before he got stuck in a deserted island and was forced to become an ActionSurvivor, which changed his entire worldview. Oliver Queen up until he lost still invokes this to hide his money.
activities as Green Arrow and maintain his SecretIdentity.
* RichKidTurnedSocialActivist: Started off as, at best, a "limousine liberal" until writer Dennis O'Neil introduced a story-line storyline in which Oliver Queen [[RichesToRags lost his fortune. fortune]]. A few nights on the street dealing with the social services net from the bottom radically altered Green Arrow's politics, leading to him becoming an outspoken champion of the poor and oppressed, as a cross between Robin Hood and Abbie Hoffman.Hoffman.

* StrawCharacter: At his worst, he's a pure Straw Liberal, constantly getting on everyone else's case for making compromises and not doing more to help those around the world stuck in dire circumstances while often failing to practice what he preaches.

to:

* ThouShallNotKill: Ollie was originally very against killing. During the O'Neil/Adams run, Ollie accidentally killed someone because his aim was thrown off by an injury. He gave up the superhero life and went to a monastery until Green Lantern and others convinced him to return. He changed his tune after the events of "The Longbow Hunters", when he was driven to kill the men who had been torturing Dinah Lance, fearing they were about to kill her. Since then Ollie was willing to make lethal force an option but only when the lives of others were at risk or just to avenge those he cares about.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Ollie really, really likes chili.
* TrickArrow: The {{Trope Maker|s}}. The miniseries ''Green Arrow: Year One'' actually shows how he came up with the boxing glove or "stun" arrow. He had to incapacitate a guard without killing him so he simply took the head off of a regular arrow (this doesn't actually work, but it's a comic book).

to:

* ThouShallNotKill: {{Thememobile}}: The Arrowcar, a customized car with a light arrow motif that he used in some of his earlier and goofiest stories.
** Ollie was a RichIdiotWithNoDayJob who [[RichKidTurnedSocialActivist became a social activist]] and a BadassNormal superhero who was devoted to doing the right thing and helping the poor. Connor only had a StrugglingSingleMother who couldn't support him, so he was raised in an ashram and spent his life studying to become a humble monk.

->'''Debut:''' ''More Fun Comics'' (Vol 1) #73

->''"I've failed this city. I've left it alone and left the people I should be protecting exposed. I'm '''never''' going to let that happen '''again'''."''

Born into a life of privilege, Oliver Queen's life would take a different turn after his yacht sank and he was forced to live on a deserted island. Using a bow to survive, Oliver would eventually return to civilization and use his newly honed skills to fight crime as the Green Arrow.
----
* ActionDad: Father of his successor Connor.
* ActionPolitician: For a time, he was the mayor of Star City.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: In his Golden Age origin, he was an archaeologist and expert on Native American cultures, who gained his skills as a tracker and archer through studying the ancient techniques utilized by Native hunters.
* AesopAmnesia: In the New 52, Oliver learns that he needs to rely on his team and can't fight crime alone at least four separate times, and he always forgets the lesson by the next issue.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He becomes a City Mayor in some versions.
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have powers. He's just good with the bow and has lots and lots of {{Trick Arrow}}s.
* BastardBoyfriend: As much as he cares about Black Canary, his actions from his philandering with other woman despite how much it hurts her even when they're not a couple or just plain being a brazen fool prone to making terrible choices wreaks havoc on their chance for a happy life. This culminates in Dinah leaving him for good in the aftermath of ''ComicBook/JusticeLeagueCryForJustice''.
* BattleCouple: With Characters/{{Black Canary|TheBlackCanary}}, though their relationship has been a turbulant affair due to his many faults.
* {{Blackmail}}: In the New 52, he became part of the new JLA assembled by [[Characters/SuicideSquadSupportStaff Amanda Waller]]. Wasn't originally on the team, but he found out that Catwoman's a member and promised not to tell if he becomes a member.
%% * ChickMagnet: Since the end of the Grell series.
* ClarkKenting: Ollie's beard style is not quite unique, but rare enough so that anyone who cared could make the connection.
* ColorCharacter: Green naturally.
* CoolCar: The "[[ThemeMobile Arrowcar]]" that was similar to Batman's "Batmobile".
And in the most recent retellings of his origins (such as ''Green Arrow: Year One'' and his ComicBook/New52 incarnation) he always had a noble heart and a desire to help people.
* DependingOnTheWriter: How much of a womanizer he is, how unpleasant he is (on a sliding scale from "bit of a tool, but otherwise okay" to "world-class asshole"), and whether or not he's the sort of man to abandon his illegitimate child.
* DisappearedDad: According to Brad Meltzer, he was present at Connor's birth but ducked out on actually having to raise him.
* DotingGrandparent: Oliver was this to Lian Harper, deceased daughter of his former sidekick Roy Harper aka Speedy/Arsenal/Red Arrow.
* {{Expy}}: A rare case of evolving into an Expy, Green Arrow and Speedy were transformed into second string versions of ComicBook/{{Batman}} and Robin in [[UsefulNotes/TheSilverAgeOfComicBooks The Silver Age]] after starting out as an AdventurerArchaeologist and [[KidHero Boy Adventurer]] respectively in [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks The Golden Age]].
* FailureHero: In the New 52, Ollie can't seem to do anything right.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Ollie doesn't have a great reputation among the superhero community due to his {{smug|Super}} tendencies and boorish behavior. At his worst moments, he could mainly snag the help of his closest friend [[ComicBook/GreenLantern Hal Jordan]] strictly because Jordan did a lot worse during his universe-ending stint as Parallax.
* GoodIsNotNice: {{Deconstruction}}. While Oliver is ultimately a force for good, he has never been particularly nice about it. On his best days, he's rude, arrogant, and is always convinced that his idea is better. On most days, he's a sanctimonious, elitist JerkAss. At his worst, he's a complete asshole. Oliver's personal and professional lives are a wreck because of his behavior and actions. His relationship with his friends, family and the superhero community is strained, with him constantly cheating on his long time girlfriend Black Canary (Dinah Lance), neglecting his sidekick and ward Speedy I/Arsenal/Red Arrow I (Roy Harper), abandoning his biological son Green Arrow II (Connor Hawke) at birth and lying to Connor that he did not know he was his son when they met and Connor became his sidekick.While Oliver generally tries and usually manages to do the right thing, there are times were even his teammates at the Justice League barely tolerate him.
* HandicappedBadass: Oliver Queen's appearance in Frank Miller's ''ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns'' story--he may be old, and without an arm, but he can still shoot arrows just fine.
* HandsOffParenting: Ollie in "Hard-Traveling Heroes", much to the ire of his son Connor.
* HandsomeLech: He has a history of being a philanderer, which was especially problematic when he was in a relationship with Black Canary.
* HeadbuttingHeroes: Ollie, a liberal, doesn't get along with Barry Allen and Hawkman, mostly due to them being conservative (and in the case of Barry and pre-Crisis Katar Hol, them being police officers).
* HonestCorporateExecutive: Oliver started out this way before he evolved beyond being a Batman expy.
* InTheHood: The Grell costume, and several variations thereafter.
* JerkAss: Ollie has had his moments which range in the many, from being a self-important moralist, to a morally ambiguous AntiHero to an outright douchebag through his career.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite his snarky attitude and general smugness, few would dispute that Oliver Queen's heart is in the right place regardless of where his head might be stuck.
It is also implied that they had been traumatized by the events of the story, Star City being destroyed for Dinah, the lost of his daughter for Roy, Connor being in a coma and losing and regaining his memories, and with the resentment they have for Oliver despite forgiving him, they all lash out at Oliver.
* LethalChef:
** "[[http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Green_Arrow%27s_Chili Ollie's Stupendous Chili Recipe]]" is too spicy for even ''Characters/{{Superman|TheCharacter}}''. Even with his vaunted willpower [[ComicBook/GreenLantern Hal Jordan]] (one of Ollie's best friends) couldn't finish it. On the bright side, ComicBook/TheFlash was able to adapt it into a weapon for fighting Captain Cold. However, Batman is able to eat it with a smile on his face and just go, "Hrm...it could use more crackers."
** ''ComicBook/TheFlashInfiniteFrontier'' reveals Ollie is equally bad at making coffee.
* LongLostRelative: In the New 52 volume, he discovers that he has a younger Japanese half-sister named Emiko.
* LostAtSea: He was shipwrecked and stranded on a DesertedIsland for a significant amount of time in his backstory.
* MasterArcher: A brilliant shot with a bow and arrow, and is excellent enough at archery that he can keep up with superpowered peers.
* MillionairePlayboy: Oliver Queen, for much of his history. When his fortune was stolen from him in the 1970s, it fully completed his shift to the liberal man of the people. He's regained money lately, but as the head of a number of charities.
* OfficialCouple: With Black Canary.
* OneNoteCook: Ollie makes a mean bowl of chili.
* PapaWolf: Oliver Queen. The man walked out of Paradise to save his son's life.
* ParentalSubstitute: To his sidekicks, Roy and Mia.
* ReallyGetsAround: Oliver Queen has a mostly undeserved reputation for having trouble keeping his arrow in his quiver. While it is true that Oliver was every bit the player [[Characters/BatmanTheCharacter Bruce Wayne]] pretends to be before becoming a superhero, he was characterized as being downright devout and at times downright possessive regarding then-girlfriend Black Canary throughout the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics. His characterization as a womanizer didn't begin until shortly after his death in the mid-1990s and he never cheated on Black Canary until Creator/JuddWinick started writing the character.
I…I killed somebody.
* RichIdiotWithNoDayJob: Oliver Queen up until he lost his money.
* RichKidTurnedSocialActivist: Started off as, at best, a "limousine liberal" until writer Dennis O'Neil introduced a story-line in which Oliver Queen lost his fortune. A few nights on the street dealing with the social services net from the bottom radically altered Green Arrow's politics, leading to him becoming an outspoken champion of the poor and oppressed, as a cross between Robin Hood and Abbie Hoffman.
* SleevesAreForWimps: His costume is generally sleeveless, though he has arm guards and gauntlets.
* StrawCharacter: At his worst, he's a pure Straw Liberal, constantly getting on everyone else's case for making compromises and not doing more to help those around the world stuck in dire circumstances while often failing to practice what he preaches.
* TaughtByExperience: In some versions of Green Arrow's origin, he develops his incredible archery as a result of being stranded on a desert island and having to learn how to use a bow in order to survive.
* TwangHello: A frequent method of greeting for Oliver Queen.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Hal Jordan since when they teamed up in a series of socially relevant stories in which the "by-the-book" Hal and "plays by his own rules" Ollie deal with issues like racism, political corruption, pollution and overpopulation.

->'''Debut:''' ''Green Arrow'' (Vol 2) #0

->''"I'm not giving up on him. I don't care if he's a jerk or a traitor or whatever. It's taken all this time to find him and I'm not giving up on my father."''

Connor Hawke is the biological son of Oliver Queen and Sandra "Moonday" Hawke. A fan of Green Arrow, he worked alongside his father for a time, until Oliver's "death". Connor would take up the Green Arrow mantle to honour his hero.
----
* AffirmativeActionLegacy: His father's multiracial successor.
* AscendedFanboy: Was introduced as a huge fan of Green Arrow even before the reader knows he's Oliver's son, and eventually becomes Green Arrow.
* ChickMagnet: To the point that Chick Magnets Wally West and Kyle Rayner are jealous!
* DarkSkinnedBlond: When the art team remembers.
* HeroicBastard: He is son of Oliver Queen (one of ''several'') and his former girlfriend Sandra "Moonday" Hawke.
* HumbleHero: In a rather stark contrast to his dad's boasting and boisterous nature.
* LegacyCharacter: With his father dead, Connor decided to take up the mantle of Green Arrow and continue his hero's work.
* MrFanservice
* NiceGuy: Contrasting with his father's JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
* OnlySaneMan: He can sometimes seem like this in a household with his hot-tempered, impulsive father and the equally impulsive and hot tempered Speedies.
* RedOniBlueOni: He's been the Blue to Ollie's, Eddie's, Roy's, and [[ComicBook/GreenLantern Kyle Rayner's]] Reds.
* ReligiousBruiser: He is a Buddhist.
* TwoferTokenMinority: His father is Anglo-Saxon and his mother is half-Korean/half-African American.
* WarriorMonk: He was literally raised in a monastery and is a formidable fighter.
* WideEyedIdealist: Even with Ollie's many faults, Connor still very much admires him and the hero business in general.
* WorldsBestWarrior: While he is a peg below [[Characters/BatmanLadyShiva Lady Shiva]], ComicBook/RichardDragon, and [[ComicBook/Batgirl2000 Cassandra Cain]], he is, along with Batman, Bronze Tiger, Black Canary, and Catman, one of the single best non-augmented or superpowered (Black Canary notwithstanding, though she seldom if ever uses her abilities in direct combat) physical combatants in the mainline/non-Elseworlds DCU.
