* AbusiveParents: He's an absolutely hideous father, as he regularly killed his children for perceived defects, and according to Past Alear, the only time he ever said their name was when he named them, and then never again. Sombron eventually clarifies that he never wanted a bond with his children, and indeed despised them for desiring a bond with him, never intending to keep any of them around past the point of serving his purpose. His counterpart in Alternate Elyos from the Fell Xenologue wasn't much better, having tampered with Nel's dragonstone at some point in time. While it's unknown what he did to it, the dragonstone warped Rafal's mind into having him pick up where his father left off.

I honestly hate to do this myself, but even Big Bads need to be truly despicable by their standards to qualify as a Hate Sink. Especially given how Sombron reacts to his defeat (strangely enough), and one of his goals is just about reuniting with the Emblem of Foundations - feels like giving him a sudden sympathetic reasoning that kills the momentum of being otherwise a merciless villain by so much. Ironically, Evil Veyle spends more percentage of screentime being sadistic than her "father". More detailed reasons can be found here.

* HateSink: Sombron is a completely despicable villain with absolutely no good qualities whatsoever. Whereas previous cruel villains like Grima had at least some charm to them and Anankos is considered a TragicVillain, Sombron is just plain nasty. He doesn't even have the minor defense of being of an AlwaysChaoticEvil species; as shown by Alear and Veyle, his surviving children, Fell Dragons aren't inherently evil at all and are more than capable of positive emotions and relationships, and while he did have reasons for his actions the evil Sombron did far outweighs its excuse; he's just an asshole.
