* {{Jerkass}}: After Robb breaks his marriage pact to the Freys by marrying Jeyne Westerling, Black Walder cements his status as one of the more vile Freys by telling Robb that he is sure one of his relatives would not mind marrying a widower. Robb nearly executes him for this, but Jeyne manages to convince him not to. He's also one of the more militarily capable captains, fancies himself as a ladies man with numerous bastards and an all-round bully... a jock.

* AristocratsAreEvil meets AmbitionIsEvil: These tropes had a baby boy, and it was him. Pity a lot of the family seems to have caught the fever.

* HumiliationConga: His entire life -- caught the pox from a CampFollower, captured and branded on the ass by a woman, suffered. ahead injury that prevents him from being a knight, married a supporter of King Aerys just before he was deposed, while one of his daughters is a glutton and the other is a notorious slut.

* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler:Shot with arrows, then his horse spooks and drags him across the ground, killing him.]]

* IronicName: He is a slimy and totally mediocre man named after a PrettyBoy KnightInShiningArmor who was both a sensitive intellectual and a military genius.

* {{Foil}}:
** She is the polar opposite of Lysa Arryn, though one generation removed: betrothed into a loveless marriage full of failures in the offspring department (though Genna's kids lived -- disappointments or not), overshadowed by a more noticeable older sibling who was basically a parent to them and their brothers (Tywin and Catelyn respectively), both married to men who weren't their first choice [[spoiler:and to whom they are cheating on.]] Of the two, of course Genna is remarkably more balanced and has a grip on her marriage and kids and manages to be a force to be reckoned with regarding her nephews; let's not get started on Lysa and her niece Sansa, because it's ''not'' pretty.
** She is everything a Lady of Lannister should ever be; grounded, proud, politically active, and authoritative... much unlike her niece Cersei, who is neither grounded nor authoritative (although certainly proud) -- and, whose actions are generally bad moves. Many of the things Cersei has accomplished by just being a Lannister, Genna has done better at... ''in spite of being a Frey'' as a handicap.
** On a more negative note, she seemingly lacks the MamaBear tendencies seen in other strong, maternal characters such as Catelyn Stark and Olenna Tyrell. From all shown evidence, she treats her kids with the same casual disregard that she treats her husband, and she didn't particularly mourn the deaths of Cleos and Tion; certainly not openly. On the other hand, she isn't micromanaging every move in their lives, turning her kids into monsters, shielding them from the blowback of their own mistakes or making them ill. So... dunno where to place her, really. Being very aware that your kids will be second-stringers always at risk of dying in other people's plots whatever you do (and through no fault of their own), so clocking out a lot and not sweating the drama while ensuring they're at least as healthy and educated as they can be without the pressure you've seen piled on others... isn't ''entirely'' unhealthy for them. Or you. In Westeros, you lose family even if you find a win. Genna knows this very well.

* {{Foil}}: To his descendant, Lord Walder Frey, who's everything he was not and vice versa: Where Forrest was a gallant, loyal, and physically powerful Lord, Walder is infamous for being an infirm, treacherous, flip flopping backslider.

* EvilOldFolks: Lord Walder is ninety-one.

* BigScrewedUpFamily: And how! TheClan, DysfunctionJunction, ItRunsInTheFamily, [[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters Loads And Loads of Walders/Waldas]], TangledFamilyTree, the works! They ''really'' spared no expense on the trimmings. Even if they were only out to troll everybody else, they'd ''still'' wind up contending with each other thanks to [[OneDegreeOfSeparation the numbers game]] meaning that they are practically bound to be directly related to ''somebody'' they're screwing over, whatever they do.

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: The Freys rival only the Targaryens in the amount of mentioned characters in the story. Still, most of the Targaryens mentioned span a period of three centuries; most if not all of the Freys mentioned are from ASOIAF '''alone'''.

Sixth son of Lord Walder Frey and first son born to his third wife Amarei Crakehall. Married to Bellena Hawick and has one son, Arwood, who is married to Ryella Royce with four children, Ryella, Androw, Alyn, and Hostella. He is full brother to Lythene (married to Lucias Vypren), Symond, Danwell (married to Wynafrei Whent), Merrett, Geremy (who married Carolei Waynwood and fathered Sandor and Cynthea), and Raymund.

The eighth son of Walder and a failed tourney knight.

Twelfth son of Walder Frey and the first son of his fourth wife Alyssa Blackwood. He is married to Leonella Lefford and has four children, Tysane, Walda, Emberlei, and Leana. He is full brother to Jammos, Whalen (married to Sylwa Paege, with children Hoster and Merianne "Merry"), Morya (married to Flement Brax), and Tyta. He serves as the steward for the Twins.

The fourteen son of Lord Walder.

* AdultFear: Despite the legendary Frey fertility, he and his wife Wynafrei (the last of the Whents) have only had stillbirths and miscarriages.

* OutnumberedSibling: He's Merrett Frey and Mariya Darry's only son, as he only has sisters.

* OutnumberedSibling: She was the only girl out of Tytos' five children. Considering that for the most part, they're overachievers, Genna is not too far behind. [[spoiler:And now she is the last living one]].

* OutnumberedSibling: Lord Walder himself. His father, the previous Lord Frey, apparently had a great deal of daughters, but Walder appears to have been his only son.
** Something to keep in mind: although outnumbered by his sisters when Dunk met him, he doesn't appear to have stayed that way. In the main series, all the Freys we meet are said to be his direct descendants (and there's little reason to doubt this), and we don't get any mention of him causing his special brand of grief to families linked to him through older ties (anybody with him as, for example, a great-granduncle would have cause to complain to the rafters about it at any tiny opportunity to -- yet, zilch). The Great Spring Sickness was just around the corner when Walder was four... What happened to his sisters and any of their kids? Or his uncle, Franklyn, and his sons aka Walder's cousins, for that matter?

* LaserGuidedKarma: Merett used to bully the other squires at Crakehall. After he was captured and humiliated by the outlaw known as the White Fawn, the other squires were extremely quick to gang up on Merett and make fun of him for it.

Powerful bannermen of House Tully, and Lords of the Crossing. Their seat, the Twins, is the only way to cross a major river, which has made them very rich. The current head of the house is Walder Frey, with most of his progeny being just as weaselly and scheming just like him, holding intense grudges and high ambition. Although not a traditional "Great" house, they rise in power during the civil war, though they are always disliked amongst their current allies. Lord Walder Frey is over 90, currently on his 8th wife. With over 25 legitimate sons and countless daughters, bastards, and grandchildren, he brings new meaning to the BigScrewedUpFamily trope. Their members tend to have a weaselly appearance and their sigil is two towers. Strangely for a house with such a major role in the plot, their words have ''not'' been revealed, even through WordOfGod, though [[WordOfDante it is implied]] in the [[Series/GameOfThrones HBO Series]] their words are "We Stand Together" ......... *cough*{{Irony}}*cough*. Explaining exactly how, why and by what amount ''that'' would be an "interesting" motto for them should make for a fine essay topic.

* MoralEventHorizon: In-universe. [[spoiler:The Red Wedding is seen as this, by pretty much everyone, everywhere.]]

* WhatAnIdiot: InUniverse, Genna makes it plain this is her view regarding ''all'' of Cersei's decisions in power; her choice of allies on the Small Council, her making an enemy of the Iron Bank and alienating Kevan, and her willingness to let the Faith Militant reform when even the Targaryens were wary of them.

* DumbMuscle: How Jaime remembers him: slow, clumsy, stupid, but incredibly strong. He cemented his entry into the Westerosi Darwin Awards early, just to underline his lack of thought. [[WhatAnIdiot You have to be a special form of stupid]] to deliberately go after the heir of Casterly Rock, when everybody in the Seven Kingdoms knows how Tywin "Lord DisproportionateRetribution" Lannister usually responds to outsiders who belittle or make fun of the Lannister family. Forget Jaime already being [[MasterSwordsman fairly nifty with a sword]] (and a bit of a {{Troll}}) even at that age...

* DeadpanSnarker: You'd feel particularly sorry for her husband. If he didn't go out of his way to [[WhatAnIdiot prove her points about him]] quite so much.

* MoralMyopia: Her cries for Justin for her father's death ring hollow when one takes into account just how many fathers her family slaughtered at the Red Wedding.

* DudeWheresMyRespect: Pervasive among most of them. Their rise to nobility through exploiting their land's advantage was perceived as opportunistic and they never really tried to clean up that image.

* [[MrExposition Mrs Exposition]]: She does this about the [[ChurchMilitant Faith Militant's]] history to Jaime, expounding on her personal view that Cersei is an idiot for allowing the Faith to be rearmed when even [[DragonRider the Targaryens]] trod carefully around the Faith Militant, requiring almost a decade of war and a grudging peace treaty to deal with the Faith Militant the last time they were powerful.
