The great majority of them can't stop themselves from acting dickish even at times when they are serious, when negotiating with Robb Stark they can't help but bring news of Winterfell's destruction, one of their conditions for the marriage between Edmure Tully and Roslyn Frey is that Robb comes to publicly apologize to Walder and his daughters, they serve disgusting dishes just before [[spoiler: the Red Wedding, during which they sew Grey Wind's head on Robb's body and throw Catelyn's body in the river in a mockery of the Tullys' funeral ritual]], and have the gal to say that Robb breaking his oath to them is an excuse for the atrocities they did.

* RagsToRiches: Except they made their fortunes through legitimate means and they are looked down upon by the other Great Houses because these means weren't military-based.
** Which is very much unrealistic: Tolls during the medieval times were serious business and it was the right of pretty much any landed nobles (except landed knights, if I remember correctly) to charge a fee for crossing a bridge, road or waterway located on their territory; it was one of the few reliable source of income after all, and war isn't cheap...

The Frey's aren't that low on the pecking order at all and the match wasn't an insult to House Stark. One of Robb's grandmothers was a Whent. With Genna, it's specifically pointed out that the insulting thing is being married to the second son of House Frey. Not the heir.

** Robb Stark having been engaged to a Frey when he was a Lord likewise denies them his hand when he becomes a King. This is genuinely a grave slight. In Westerosi history, Lyonel Baratheon rebelled against Aegon V when Prince Duncan turned down a Baratheon wedding, and that was when ''the Iron Throne'' slighted him as opposed to Robb Stark who is "King in the North". However, Lyonel didn't turn to such honourable circumstances and accepted another marriage. Also, Walder Frey had forced Robb to make the pact under dishonourable circumstances and the marriage is an insult to the Stark similar to when Tytos married Genna to a Frey, they are too low on the pecking order to make that demand.
