Tokiwadai Middle School is an [[OneGenderSchool all girls]] school within Academy City and one of it most prestigious with a strict bar of entry that ensure it's an institution that host a small, but powerful student population of espers of influential background.

Tokiwadai is also where half of the main Railgun cast currently attend, namely Misaka and Kuroko, and often where they encounter their fair share of friends, enemies, and trouble.

* AbsurdlyDividedSchool: A variety of factions exist within Tokiwadai with Misaki's faction, unsurprisingly, being the biggest of them all and her faction has factions of their own. [[SubvertedTrope Unlike most examples]], the cliques are less like warring factions and more like clubs and research societies for interested and like-minded students. The relationship between cliques were much more tense during Misaka and Misaki's first year at Tokiwadai, [[spoiler:but Misaki is implied to have put an end to all the petty conflict thanks her schemes]].

* EveryoneHasStandards: One of their known prerequisites is that a potential student must be a Level 3 esper. This rule is so strict that the school once sparked an international incident for refusing to accept a girl from a royal family because she didn't the power level requirement. This shows that despite being a school who's student population is primarily made of TheOjou, no amount of money can ever change or bend their rules of admission.
** However, while money can't make the school admit you as a student, a student's skills potentially could. This was the case for Houjou Arei as despite being formally classified as a Level 2 esper, her skills at understanding and using her power meant she was by all account a Level 3.

* SuperheroSchool: Downplayed as none of the students are expected to perform super heroics or similar acts nor does the school's curriculum primarily revolve around their powers. Regardless, the entire student body is made of Level 3 or above espers, which means the students all have stable and considerable abilities which the school is equipped to train and test on a fairly regular basis.

A Level 4 student of Tokiwadai who appears exclusively in the ''Railgun'' sidestory volumes included in the limited edition video releases of the third season of ''Index''. She is a member Misaki's clique due to Misaki's interest in her power, Carbon Search, which allows Yuri to analyze anything with carbon in it. Mikoto encounters her due to Yuri desire to challenge Kukoro in a violin competition.

* GoingCommando: She doesn't wear underwear, apparently due to "some personal belief". What this belief might be is never elaborated on. Needless to say, this eventually proves to be a problem, especially given the very short Tokiwadai school uniform skirt.
* MagicFeather: She believed can make the best violin music since she uses an antique violin. Mikoto and her friends disagree, saying that Yuri just talented, proving it by having Yuri perform with a regular violin.

* HiddenBuxom: You wouldn't necessarily know it, but she's actually just as stacked as Misaki Shokuhou. It's less noticeable, partly because she's more ladylike and modest in how she carries herself -- but also because her preferred model of bra is a bit too small for her.

* NoNameGiven: Until she gets her own spinoff, she's never given any sort of name and was only identified as Ringlet Curl Girl. Mikoto might not even know her name in the first place.

* RegalRinglets: She has multiple large ringlets in the back. She was even known as the Ringlet curl girl until her actual name was finally revealed.

* WeirdnessCensor: Like most Science afflicted characters, Junko assumed the ghost following her is the product of an esper power. [[spoiler:To be fair, she was correct, as the ghost was actually an Esper with an AstralProjection ability.]]

* LockedOutOfTheLoop: She has great knowledge of Academy City's Dark Side, but is completely unaware of the Magic Side.

A student at Tokiwadai and the captain of the archery club. Her level 4 esper power, Wave Conductor, allows her to manipulate sound, light, or anything with the properties of a wave. She can amplify them and focus them to achieve a variety of effects. She's also the older sister of Rakko Yumiya, a member of the Dark Side team SCHOOL.

* BrownNote: Iruka wins an archey competition with Junko by twanging the string of her bow and using her esper power to affect her senses, causing Junko to miss her next shot.

* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Junko is shown to be popular in Tokiwadai and has a lot of female admirers, including a Kuroko-expy.

* {{Expy}}: Possibly one of [[Manga/KOn Ritsu Tainaka]]. They not only look alike, they even have the same [[Creator/SatomiSato voice actress]]!

* SupernaturalSuffocation: Kinuho is capable drowning Baba in a sphere of water.

* PinkMeansFeminine: Her hair, eyes, and clothing are pink. It reflects her childish, but maternal personality as a teacher.

* CombinationAttack: The [[WaveMotionGun Liquid-Proof Railgun]], an attack combining Misaki's power over liquids and Misaka's Railgun and Anti-Arts Armament. Using her ability to precisely manipulate liquids, Misaki coats Misaka's coin in a thin liquid lattice designed to melt in a specific way. When the coin is fired, the coating would protect the coin from being burned up by the friction while the explosive evaporation would add extra power to shot's acceleration effectively creating a railgun shot with limitless distance and power. The attack was so powerful it was able to [[spoiler:annihilating the Windowless Building]], a feat originally thought impossible.

* HateAtFirstSight: Chapter 132.5 of the Railgun manga reveals Misaki hated Mikoto from the moment they met as Misaki blames Mikoto for voluntary giving her DNA to immoral scientists which leads to the creation and early death of Misaki's first friend, Dolly.

* OdangoHair: She wears her hair in two cute buns.
