* DatedHistory: The entire premise of the show relies on the then current belief that the sunken Yamato was mostly intact under the sea, and could be refitted into the Space Battleship. Years later, advances in technology disproved it pretty badly: the ship's ammunition exploded while sinking, splitting off the bow and forcing out its monster turrets, and the wreckage is more or less torn to pieces.

* UnfortunateNames: Philippine fans of ''Star Blazers'' snickered when they first heard the original Japanese name of the lead character. "Susumu" sounds exactly like a playful way of saying "Susu mo," which means your nipple. Though he was much more oftenly called by his family name, Kodai, for some reason the subbtitles of the subbed release kept calling him by his first name, making certain dramatic moments Narm. (You hear "Kodai! Kodaaaaiiiii!" while you see "Susumu! Susumuuuuuuu!")

The original series was followed by two more seasons and several movies with new villains and malleable continuity. The fourth movie from 1983, misleadingly titled ''Final Yamato'', is notable for the fact that its 70mm cut holds the record of being the longest animated movie ever released, clocking in at 2 hours and 43 minutes, beating out the runner-up, 2010's ''[[LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya]]'', by just one minute[[note]]while there's definitely a large number of live-action movies that run for even longer, with one's runtime clocking in at ''[[UpToEleven an entire month]]'', animated movies typically require a lot more manpower to create than live-action ones, and as such aren't known for being particularly long by comparison; in the west, most animated movies don't even crack an hour and a half[[/note]].

** While the Saki was changed to spring water because we cant have people drinking booze on a kids show, the change seemed more in the spirit of the show. It said, that this, right here, is what we are fighting for - the thing we can no longer have, a final bit of home saved for very special occasions.
