As a longtime member of ROBLOX, since 2007, I felt that I should give my two cents on it. Here it is. Be afraid.
ROBLOX is a website much like any other website where you have an avatar. You can buy various amounts of hats, weapons called Gear, bodies, shirts, pants, and faces in the Catalog for a type of currency called Robux, premium currency one gets by buying Builder's Club, advanced membership with a lot of features. Tickets, the daily currency for everyone, were removed in 2016.
All hats, gear and packages cost robux, with the exceptions being some items being free, especially sponsor items. What makes ROBLOX different from other "Avatar sites" is the ability to create your own games for everyone else to play. Normal users can only have one game active, while premium users can have multiple, with the highest premium being able to have 100 places active.
The games on ROBLOX range in variety, so if you can imagine it, it's probably already on ROBLOX. ROBLOX hosts many events over the course of each year, celebrating Easter, Christmas, All Hallows' Eve, and even celebrating the start of Summer and Winter.
Users are also capable of creating groups, which they can then allow anyone to join, or certain people to join, with no limit to membership. Groups can go to war with other groups by setting them as their Enemy, and duking it out in the groups' games, which stand in as their bases. There is a lot of competition to be had here, and very little is friendly and fun.
While these all sound great, what sadly offsets this is the community. ROBLOX's community is pretty bad, despite ROBLOX being certified by Trust E. The forums were the worst, with each Sub-forum treating themselves and others like countries, and insulting the other. A friendly game quickly turns into a heated flamewar with the refugees caught by the flaming debris.
Moderation on ROBLOX is also in dire need of improvement, as many sexualized threads, games, and players can stay up on the website for days, even after being reported by everyone. It got so bad that ROBLOX removed the forums entirely in late 2016, shortly after removing many of the sub-forums that the ROBLOX Staff felt were no longer needed.
The site also leans heavily towards developers, often favoring them over others, and allowing the top game developers to help with official events, though these mostly are just the devs slapping the appropriate decals and seasonal appearance over existing games. Users who aren't good at building, scripting, or creating things are left behind.
Despite its flaws, ROBLOX can be a good experience for you, if you don't allow yourself to be affected by the negativity.
I love this site! It's so creative! Like, for example, the currency isn't called "Coins" or something unoriginal like that. They use creative names for it and there are two types of currency (robux and tickets). And instead of a site where you just walk around and talk and play games, you have that and you get to build your own worlds and visit others! And you can make truly amazing things with enough scripting and talented building. And the creators of the site don't create the games you play, you get to make whatever you want. Sure this site does have it's downfalls (ahem, spamming and very inappropriate games...advertised with spamming) but there are almost always solutions. Also the fact that you even get to change your character's mood (with faces) I found awesome when you think of it that way. I totally recommend this site for people who want a different kind of game.
