There's plenty of Downton Abbey fanfiction that either avoids Matthew's death with some AU or tries to resurrect him somehow. Second Chances and its sequel, No Fate, stand out because they tell a story that manages the resurrection in a fun, slightly disturbing, and intriguing way, and involves The Doctor and Diana to boot. The author makes great use of the fact that actress Penelope Wilton appeared in both Doctor Who (as Prime Minister Harriet Jones) and Downton Abbey (as Isobel Crawley).
The pacing is great, the revelations are interesting, and various Crawley family members get to do unexpected things. Once the initial crisis is over, the family and the servants process what happened and there are several insightful conversations.
Despite the wacky circumstances, every single character, from both fandoms, feels like a logical extension of their canon selves. The relationships are preserved but never become cloying. It's really a lovely piece of writing, very highly recommended!
