Re "vocal range exceeded": not sure, but are you referring to the parts that were, originally, written for the "Wagner Tuba"? (Once a real thing, though I think no longer in use- and of course not alone in that. History of instrumentation and instruments seems fairly interesting, actually, see eg Forsyth's book...)
