I'd like to challenge this recent addition to Alternative Character Interpretation:

  • Was Giulia genuinely frightened of Alberto revealing himself as a sea monster or was she just shocked by the sudden reveal? After all she seems perfectly accepting and even concerned for Luca's well being when she reveals his identity too?

Generally an alternative character interpretation is not what the creators "obviously" intended but nothing shown in the movie discounts the alternate viewpoint.

However, this example doesn't really describe two different interpretations of Giulia.

At first she's shocked to see Alfredo's sea monster form, then afraid as she back aways saying "don't hurt us". Then Giulia collects her courage using a stick to keep Alberto at bay as Ercole and gang drive him away.

By the time Giulia & Luca get home, she's had time to think things over, reflecting on the friendship of Luca and Alberto, so that it immediately comes clear to her after she splashes Luca and reveals him as sea monster.

What's shown is a logical unfolding of Giulia processing what took place in the story, going from shocked to scared to understanding. There really aren't two Giulia's at play here so it's not a case of Alternative Character Interpretation.

Sounds about right to me. She was both shocked and frightened at first as an instinctive reaction, but got a chance to be logical about it during the walk home. Fear of the unknown, then acceptance of someone who just wants to live in peace is also a recurring theme of the entire film, isn't it? Giulia just jumps between the two phases within a couple minutes.
