- Profit and VRML: VRML was mainly a fad that didn't at all take off. The entry says "it was considered the future of the Internet" is hogwash. Sure, advocates probably sold it that way, but they were the only ones who considered that. It's also not at all accurate that "it would not be uncommon for a corporate intranet to be in VRML..." intranets were barely a thing in 1996 first of all, second of all, no, VRML was not "common" for corporate intranets. If anything, most corporate internal networks a. wouldn't have been intranets because they were rarely IP-based, b. would have been built heavily on shared folders, terminal-heavy, and using proprietary data systems, not web browsers. Whoever posted that probably are confusing VRML with the cyberspace notions of Neuromancer and other cyberpunk fiction.
