It turns out their mother is the culprit - in a sort of \\\"Internet Munchausen by proxy\\\", she had re-invented her two daughters, as idealised versions of themselves, to live out the life she would have loved to have herself. She vicariously lives through her imagined daughters until she is found out by the NY photographer, who turns up on her doorstep one day. And discovers....
