The reworded version is vastly superior to the original in every way. It is the original that is unwieldy. Contrast the original:

with the revision:

In this context, we are drawing a comparison, not something that is supposedly \\\"in practise\\\". Thus, the \\\'\\\'correct\\\'\\\' interpretation is to say that Mikako and Noboru\\\'s correspondence is \\\'\\\'akin to\\\'\\\' an actual time travel romance, without any time travel involved.
