Here’s a possible contender for Fridge Brilliance: It’s not actually confirmed whether or not the Tethered were failed subterranean government experiments designed to control the people above, only ever hearing that from Red, and even then she only “believes” this to be the case. Did Red only believe that of the Tethered… because it’s the plot of C.H.U.D., one of the VHS she had around, watching that Hands Across America commercial when she was a child? It’s foreshadowing for the audience but for Red, with her stunted psychological growth having to forcefully live amongst the Tethered, is the only logical explanation she can think of on her own.
