Re: the Singapore bullet point. The island actually hosted the Kingdom of Singapura until the late 14th century (when it was destroyed by a Majapahit invasion), and its name and history were known to Portuguese cartographers by the 17th. While the island\'s settlements in the early 18th century were tiny and ethnically Malay (it would later come under the Sultanate of Johor before getting ceded to the British), there were apocryphal accounts that parts of the region served as a lair for Chinese pirates, including the modern Sentosa Island. The movie\'s portrayal still bears no resemblance to the real thing, but I think that the way it\'s written on the page is a bit too dismissive of its historical grounding.
