Under Artistic License: Law, it says that the president wouldn't be able to appoint a Vice President, as the Speaker of the House of Representatives would succeed him. This is not the case (at least since the 25th amendment); if the Vice President dies or is impeached, the President can appoint a Vice President as long as it's confirmed by a 3/4ths majority by both houses of Congress. In theory, one could infer that the nomination was confirmed and Chuck Goodrich became VP in a wholly legitimate way
