The salesman character was a little slow and he hated to be pitied or helped in ways he didn't feel earned.
For example: at one point he got hit by a bus but refused a payout, citing that he was at fault for not looking both ways before stepping out into the street. Another was him discovering a regular customer had passed away and her kids were going through her things which led him to find out that she had a room full of stuff she'd bought from him over the years, implying that she had been buying things she didn't need to help him make his sales goals.
Occasionally there'd be a voice over from the main character telling a joke about salesmen, with the very last one having the punchline of the salesman in the joke itself realizing that he ended up in the wrong joke.
