That sounds...familiar.
This probably won't help, but I remember an old show with people in costumes a la The Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure. They were in a dark lab and sang a song in which the chorus was "Looks like he's making a new invention" (I assume the song was called "Invention")
Does that sound Like your show, at all? Does it help?
Edited by chloso This is the end of my post.Could it have been Mr. Henry's Wild and Wacky World? It has a guy who is not necessarily a scientist, but has a bunch of technology in his house, along with a talking fish (puppet), a talking moose head (puppet), and a talking suit of armor (sort of a puppet), as well as skits that would occur on the tv screens.

The way the world is, I think a silly evening in the theatre is a good thing, to take our minds off terror. -Tim Curry
I remember watching a tv show as a child which I only recall to be creepy but might not be considering I probably thought many things were creepy at that age. I want to say I remember it was a show that had some sort of a lab or room that was dark with tvs or screens and the character would come in and out after different scenes/ skits were shown. I want to say the character was a scientist as I remember the showing being somewhat educational but in a very eerie way. Can't recall if it was claymation/ puppets/ cartoon or a mixture. I know it's a very vague description but please help!! I'd recognize it if I saw it.
