The "correct" spelling would be 少年. "shonen" is a romanization, because this is an English-language wiki.
If I had to guess, it was intended to be "shōnen" as in traditional Hepburn romanization, but macrons are an obscure character and not supported by the software. As it is, "shonen" is a perfectly acceptable alternative,
