No, you cannot play Yu like he was in the P4 anime. I tried taking the closest dialogue options sometimes and the other characters didn't respond the same way.
He's still pretty wacky and does stuff just cause. Golden including stuff like trying to make out with Teddie till Dojima enters the scene and seducing a policeman withba wife and kids.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. So you've got two or three scenes where he can display a bare minimum of personality. Otherwise he's Blanky McBlankslate. I didn't even get the chance to be mean with my dialogue options.
With Joker he's naturally falmboyant & theatrical at least as a Phantom Thief.
Sure he doesn't talk but you can tell he is having the time of his life through his facial & body expersions which is something.
I'd say Yu really is the most bland cause Minato has the trait of being very depressed.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Yu has being a flirt as his one cltrait. Enough he can date all the girls andnnever suffer backlash for it.
Naoto even knows about the rest but chooses blissful ignorance. Its my favorite option for Goldens Valentines cause I spend no time with any of them to hang out with Yosuke and Kanji.
Joker is hilarious. I wish I could pick the options the game lets you play him as in other games. Bein able to play him as a complete gadfly/troll that still cares very much for his friends sold him to me much more than any other protags did, even femc.
"when you stare too long into the abyss, Xehanort takes advantage of the distraction to break into your house and steal all your shit."Huh you are right.
Yu is the manwhore, possessing such an insatiable lust he is driven to bang anything in sight with no mercy or remorse.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."And he'll pick Kanji and Yosuke if given the option to flirt with too. Its why Yosuke x Yu is popular. In Nippon.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Any holes a goal after all.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I also think Joker has more of a personality than the other two. That he can't become the all-beloved god-king of his school like 3 and 4 Guy can really helps make him seem less like a wish fulfillment and more like an actual character.
I always interpreted Minako as someone who tries really, really hard to be a Genki Girl to be a rock for her teammates and keep her mind off the whole death thing the creepy kid keeps popping up to tell her at night.
Some dialogue options do imply she's aware of how bad things are but chooses to have a brave face about it.
I mean instead he becomes the god king of Tokyo.
This song needs more love.Demon King of Tokyo.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. His Persona is Lucifer so he actually is really the demon king.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I've never thought any of them had a personality beyond what you could pick and pretty much nothing can convince me otherwise. The good thing, is that it keeps me from getting into "who's the best" wars like this one.
P5's Protag doesn't have that excuse, really.
He's even has more lines then His predecessors, who only have grunts. His Persona also talks to him more, too, so He's much more expressive in that sense by default.

Watch SymphogearMan, now I really wish I have the chance to play P5.
I think Arena Yu feels so boring is because he has no actual interactions with his teammates. Even in Ultimax, his group interaction is mostly Chie and Yosuke talking to each other, with him occasionally spouting the cool, serious lines. That really makes his friendship feels like an Informed Attribute. He doesn't have any character besides being "the cool guy everyone likes".
It's a shame because in Arena he at least has glimpses of a personality, like teasing Yosuke over the nurses magazines.
Anime Yu is so much of a lovable whackjob, though. Doing silly things with a serious face is a favorite character trope of mine. Is he the same in the Golden anime?
The Arena manga also has some really silly moments from Yu.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeIt also had Yosuke as the main character which was and well done. Especially that Yosuke and Aigis vs Shadow Labrys.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Trying to make an established character out of what was a literal self-insert is difficult. That and the Arena games....are pretty poorly written compared to P4 itself.
That said, yea I concur about Joker; he easily has the most personality out of the three. It's to the point when he's the only one of the three who has internal monologues spoken in first person.
Even fan artists tend to be somewhat consistent with him, even if they take liberties with it.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I really really like is when Persona side material goes out of its way to make Yu fucking weird. Like, those are always the most fun choices he has, and it's a rather unique take on a protagonist's charisma. Weird Yu is my favorite protag.
No doubt Joker has the most personality, though. He has the best smartass choices and it totally fits in-line with the tone of his game.
I have no opinion on in-game Makoto since I've never played 3, though I plan on it. I do appreciate him being a super chill dumbass, like that one time in the first movie where he tells a dude that he's smart for chaining his ear to his nose and doesn't get why that was an insult. Or in the Q manga (i think?) where he absolutely takes advantage of Junpei and orders a fuckton of food when Junpei offers.

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeYeah deadpan asshole who’s gloomy seems about right for Makoto
Anyway, done with Episode Adachi. Love it when he calls the IT dumbasses in his head, since he's not exactly wrong.
Seeing what happens behind the scenes only confirms it further that Sho is really just an angry edgy teen. You know those people who says something is "mature" because it has blood and violence? Exactly what Sho is. Minazuki's just an enabler who pampers him.
Also saw a bit of Episode P3. Huh, so the two stories already branch off this early? I was expecting the branch to be somewhere near the middle.
And then Mona shows up and that's largely gone.
They have choices in the games that let them be more than bland bread with no flavor. Its why Yus so wacky in his anime.
P5 anime though manages to make Jokers bland choices blander and whitewash the Phantom Thieves into saints and missing the whole games theme around sin not being inherently bad. Its impressive in a way just how bad it did it.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.
